Faithful People Serve Others - Pay attention God is talking to you!
Again I’m amazed at how God talks to me about
service and serving in the church. Another word for service is ministry. God
has given you and me a gift to use to minister or serve His church. We are all
called to be ministers; it’s not just a position for pastor or paid staff.
“God has given each of you a gift
from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another”
(1 Peter 4:10 NLT)
On service, Saddleback
senior pastor Rick Warren says, “God
uses my talents to test my unselfishness. You have to decide in life for whom
or what you’re going to live. You’re either going to live a self-centred,
miserly life or you’re going to live for something greater than yourself — the
kingdom of God. Faithful people don’t live for themselves. They realize that
the talents God gave them are not for their own benefit; they’re to make the
world a better place. God shaped you to serve him, and there’s only one way to
do that: by serving other people.”
Remember Ps. Rolly sermon[1]
introduction last week regarding radical relationships? Speaking generally about our Australian
culture it is suggested that (1) we look more into looking out for what we can
get, rather than what we can give; (2) we are more into making demands than making
commitments and (3) we are more into power and control than serving and caring
for others.
Rick Warren further stated that,
“Faithful people realize that their talents are not for their benefit. You may
have a talent for art and say that you do it “just because you love to do it.”
That’s nice, but that’s not a good enough motive. God didn’t give you artistic
ability just so you can love to do it. He gave it to you so you can use your
art in some way to help other people.
When God made you, he gave you all
kinds of gifts, talents, and abilities, your S.H.A.P.E; Spiritual gifts, Heart,
Abilities, Personality, and Experiences. These five things
make you you. And God
made you you. There’s
nobody like you in the whole world, and he wants you to be you for his glory. God made us all different
so that everything in the world gets done. If we all liked to do the same
thing, there would be a whole lot left undone[2]”.
Through their own choice, many folk today are time
poor. I have been one of those. I, like others used recreation time to pursue
happiness. In his book, “The Happiness Trap – Stop Struggling, Start
Living” author Dr. Russ Harris poses the question, “What exactly is
happiness?” I’m sure we all agree with
Dr. Harris when he says that we all want it, we all crave it, [and] we all
strive for it[3]. He writes that happiness
has two meanings. “Usually it refers to a feeling; a sense of pleasure,
gladness or gratification. We all enjoy happy feelings, so it’s no surprise
when we chase them. However feelings of happiness do not last no matter how
hard we try to hold onto them they slip away every time”.
The other meaning of happiness is a rich, full and
meaningful life. When we take action on the things that truly matter deep in
our hearts, when we move in directions which we consider valuable and worthy,
when we clarify what we stand for in life and act accordingly, then our lives
become rich and full and meaningful and we experience a powerful sense of
vitality. This is not some fleeting feeling – it is a profound sense of a life
well lived. If we live a full life, we
will feel the full range of human emotions, pleasurable feelings, as well as
uncomfortable ones, such as sadness fear and anger. Life involves pain. However
Jesus said, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come
that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10 NIV) and
as victor over sin and death Jesus said, “I have told you these things, so that
in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But
take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16.33 NIV) Jesus said, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another” (John
13.33-35).
For prayer and meditation: “Do I want to live a
full and complete life as God wants of me?” if so, “What gift has God given me
to serve his people and how can I use my gifts and talents to serve others?”
As God prompts you, come and speak with Pastors
Noel, Rolly or me, in fact any of the ministry team or admin staff about the
areas in which you would like to serve.
