26th August 2012

Mission Minded from the Beginning with Sport!

When I asked in last week’s edition of the weekly news, “What’s next sports fans?” I was pleasantly surprised to be informed of other sporting facts from the annals of Good Shepherds ‘old but not cold’ netball brigade. As* Barbra Streisand sang, ‘Memories, like the corners of my mind, misty water-coloured memories of the way we were…” Thank you Joy and Rae for the following information and photo:
“The 1st Good Shepherd Lutheran Netball Team started in 1977, playing the Winter Season. This team played in the Grand Final but lost. The original team was formed while worshipping across the road. (Now Mattiskes)

At some stage we had 3 teams playing winter & summer seasons [on] outside [courts], before entering teams in an inside competition, winning a number of Grand Finals. I'm not sure what year it was when the Good Shepherd Netball Club folded, possibly around 1990”
further info: While Good Shepherd had a number of teams in the local netball competition, there were also numbers of our ‘girls’, playing in other local teams netball teams creating friendships and being a Christian witness  to the others in those teams. (Could we persuade or coax Kathy Tscharke, Carol Eckermann, Jan Dolling, Laurel Pix, Judi Rodgers and others out of retirement for another season or two!)

*“Scattered pictures, of the smiles we left behind. Smiles we gave to one another for the way we were.” How many of these young women (left) from the Team of 1977 do you recognise?

Back row: (left to right) Ann Hentschke, Di Ollino, Rae Lehmann, Loris Milham, Helen Hearne, Anthea Courtney; Front row: (left to right) Joy Wandel, Jan Gladigau (deceased), Bev Kramer, Chris Hermann, Heidi Linsenmeier.
*Written by Marvin Hamlisch and performed by Barbra Streisand.

Thank you from Maranatha Health
The recent focus on the work of Maranatha Health in Uganda at Para Vista Lutheran has been a huge encouragement to us. We do not have the final tally yet but it appears that well over $2000 was raised to assist the delivery of health care, and illness prevention, in Kamwenge. This is very significant because around $500 can support the work of Maranatha Health for one day. In addition, we are about to begin a second building phase in Kamwenge, which will erect additional staff housing and a staff community hall. It has become apparent that in order to recruit and retain good staff in this remote area of Uganda, we need to be able to provide housing for them. The building program will require approximately $60,000. The gifts of the Para Vista congregation, as well as their love and encouragement and prayer, are vital to the well-being of Michael and Kim Findlay, who are faithfully putting into practice what they believe God is calling them to do in Kamwenge.  On behalf of the Maranatha Health Board in Australia and Maranatha Health Uganda, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the church for its support and encourage you to continue your commitment to this project in the long term.

God bless you,
David Findlay (Chair, Maranatha Health Australia)
