The key to good friendships

I once heard someone say, “If you want to have good friends, be a good friend.” There is a lot of truth in this. As we give the gift of friendship we often receive it in return.

Having friends is very important to us. When our friendships are going well, life goes well. When our friendships are going bad, life goes bad.

So how can we improve our friendships? How can we become better friends to others? One of the biggest friendship killers is when we expect things from our friends that they cannot give. We often expect our friends to meet our deepest needs of love and security in ways that are beyond the capabilities of imperfect human beings. Sooner or later these expectations are shattered. Our friends let us down and we are left hurt and wondering what to do next.

These deep needs of love and security cannot be met in any ordinary human friendship. These needs were created by God and can only be met by God through a relationship with Jesus. Jesus loves us more than we will ever know. Jesus loves us so fully and completely that he died for each of us on the cross in our place so that we could be right with God. Jesus’ love never runs out or grows cold like human love. Jesus’ love is unconditional. You do not have to change for Jesus to love you. Jesus will never leave you or abandon you. Jesus will never reject you. Jesus is our perfect friend.

As we grow in our relationship with Jesus and live in the security that he will always love us and will never leave us we are better placed to be good friends to each other. We will no longer look to other humans for the love and security that only Jesus can give. Sure we will enjoy the love we receive through our friends and we will feel supported by them, but they are no longer the only source of our love and security. We will be less demanding on our friends and more often than not this will help the friendship grow and flourish.

Jesus is our best friend and he gives us his friendship so that we can be good friends to each other.

This week we continue the Series, “Everyday mission for everyday people”. This week’s message is “Clearing the clutter - making space for mission” Tell those rich in this world's wealth to quit being so full of themselves and so obsessed with money, which is here today and gone tomorrow. Tell them to go after God, who piles on all the riches we could ever manage - to do good, to be rich in helping others, to be extravagantly generous.  If they do that, they'll build a treasury that will last, gaining life that is truly life (1 Timothy 6:17-19 The Message)

Rise Up Dance Concert......THANKYOU THANKYOU!
Firstly, a very BIG THANKYOU to Laura Carson for organising this event. What a bunch of talent she found for our entertainment! The little one's Team from Good Shepherd were very cute, along with a couple of other 'little people' dance teams....well done!  Laura even managed to get a visiting team from the USA, who are touring and performing here at the moment. We have had very positive comments from performers and attenders of what an excellent night it was! Many thanks to all the Raffle prize donors, all the volunteer helpers on the night and to the Cebu Fundraising Team for all their time and help. There is still some ticket money to come in and expenses to be taken out, so the amount raised from this fundraiser is approximately $5000!
A fantastic effort everyone!

We are still looking for 1 or 2 new Team members, as we will have 1 or 2 members retiring at the end of this year.
If you have a passion for the mission areas, especially Cebu Mission Foundation, then talk to me or one of the other
Team members for more information on what we do.
