Mentoring,
Anyone?

“As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” This statement comes from one of the more famous proverbs in the Bible, and it points to a basic truth: one of our most important jobs as Christians and as human beings is to help each other grow in the faith.
Some of the ways we do this every day are by treating people kindly, by praying for others, by encouraging people who could use an uplifting word and sometimes challenging them when they stray. This sort of support is also an important part of Christian discipleship. A mentor is a spiritual tutor, somewhere between a friend and a teacher. A mentor offers the wisdom of his or her experience to another person, helping them to mature in their own faith and life.
Anyone can be a mentor to someone else and it is often a powerful way that you can help. Mentoring is an important role that anyone can fill. You don’t have to be a pastor or a theologian to help someone through a tough spot in their life or to offer a listening ear and some encouragement.
Every one of us needs someone in our life who will take time to help us walk the right path. Need some life direction? Why not ask someone for a few minutes of his or her time? And if you have learned a few lessons and gained some knowledge and wisdom through life’s journey, why not pass it on!

This week. We continue our series PARABLES WITH PUNCH - STORIES THAT STIR.
44 "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. 45 "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls.46 When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it..

Our next session for ‘What’s next Lord?’ will be on Saturday 5th November, 9am – 12noon in the hall. In this session we will seek God for strategies to implement the key themes that emerged from the first two sessions. If you are passionate about participating in the mission God has given us, come along and help us discern our next steps as a church. Everyone is welcome and even if you did not participate in either of the first two sessions you can still come. Your contribution will be valued.

If you have any questions please speak to or email Pastor Noel at nkluge@paravista.org.au

Impact 2012

You can enter the school library via the door in the courtyard opposite the rear doors of the church. Come along and hear about the great things God is doing among us and how we can play our part in making an impact in 2012.

Media release

Your generous support allows LCC to demonstrate the kind of love God offers each of us…
Each Christmas Lutheran Community Care staff and volunteers work together to help people doing it tough celebrate Christmas. This year with the help of generous supporters they hope to provide nearly 1,000 Christmas Hampers in the Metropolitan and Barossa District.
To find out how you can help please go to the website at www.lccare.org.au or contact reception at the Blair Athol office by calling 08 8269 9300 for a complete list of items needed for this year. LCC ask that donations be in to their offices by mid-November so they can have ample time to prepare the hampers.
Peace – of mind!
On Cultural Sunday a blue ‘Peace’ flag was displayed on the hall wall. On he centre of the flag was a white and pink dove carrying an olive twig and on each side and top and bottom was the word ‘peace’ in four different languages. Jürgen Lehmann and I obviously established the English and German translation, however we had no idea of the other country of origin of the other two…that was until I received an email from Ros Molloy, “Dear Barry, the two other peace words are; Paix – French, Mir – Croatian".
Thanks Ros, We can now sleep in peace!

23 October 2011

Shhhh!!!
Do you sense God?
Many of you will know that I have just spent 6 weeks travelling around Europe. As someone who loves architecture and art I saw some of the most incredible sights. One of my favourite things to see was the beautiful big Cathedrals/ Abbeys/ Basilicas/ Churches that pop up around every corner. However St Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City (Rome) definitely stood out among the rest. It is an incredibly impressive building, absolutely stunning- inside and out.  It got me thinking about what a place like St Peter’s is worth, with its famous art work and marble, not to mention the actual building or the land it is on. Some would say priceless.

While I was away I went into maybe 20 of these churches. Each took my breath away, because visually they were very impressive. But each left me wondering and hoping for a sense of God. I have no doubts that many people each week meet God in these beautiful, majestic buildings, but not me. For me the building almost serves as a distraction from God. It reminded me of 1 Kings 19: 11-12, where God is talking to Elijah:

‘The Lord said, "Go out. Stand on the mountain in front of me. I am going to pass by." As the Lord approached, a very powerful wind tore the mountains apart. It broke up the rocks. But the Lord wasn't in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake. But the Lord wasn't in the earthquake. After the earthquake a fire came. But the Lord wasn't in the fire. And after the fire there was only a gentle whisper.’

The footnotes in my bible put it like this, ‘Elijah knew that the sound of a gentle whisper was God’s voice. He realised that God doesn’t reveal himself only in powerful, miraculous ways. To look for God only in something big, such as rallies, churches, conferences or highly visible leaders may be to miss Him because He is often found gently whispering in the quietness of a humbled heart’.

Blessings,
Sophie Gerrie

From the Board
After 11 years of serving our community as an outstandingly efficient and relational Administration Manager, John Dolling has decided the time to resign has arrived. He plans to spend more quality time with his wife Jan and family, and enjoy time exploring what it means to relax! In his role John has always given time to working closely with people and building them up, as well as ensuring the administration, policy and facilities are working effectively for our church community. We thank John abundantly for his time of service. John will be missed as a member of the staff team, but we have no doubt his humour will be shared regardless of position! He and Jan will continue to be actively involved in our church community. John’s finishes up in late March 2012.
