God made famous - Radical love

This Sunday at Good Shepherd
We continue our new series God made famous as we look at spreading the fame of Jesus through radical love. Jesus said, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:34, 35 NIV)

The most effective way to spread the fame of Jesus is through loving one another. The first Christians spread the fame of Jesus throughout the Roman Empire by radically loving each other and those around them. Their radical love was so effective that Emperor Julian (AD331-363) feared this new religion might take over the Empire.

The early Christians’ demonstration of God’s love made their message about God’s love attractive and helped spread the fame of Jesus.

Can the same be said about us today? This week we look one the predominate perceptions those outside the church have of Christians and why they perceive us this way. We’ll also look at what it means to love radically in our current context.

Sunday Readings: Luke 6:27-36; John 13:34, 35

God made famous - More than me

This Sunday at Good Shepherd
This week we begin a new sermon series called ‘God made famous’. The Bible says, ‘So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.’ (1 Corinthians 10:31) Everything we do as followers of Jesus is to be for God’s glory, not our own glory. We are to live for the fame of God.

In a culture that tells us that life is “all about me”, God’s call to live for his glory and not our own is both challenging to hear and live out. However, no matter how much glory we may attain in this life, it will only ever be for this life. In the end it will all be in vain if done apart from God.

In our opening message ‘More than me’ we will explore what God’s glory is and why living for his fame is the ultimate purpose of our lives. We will also explore how we can better spread the fame of Jesus.

Sunday Readings:
Matthew 13:44-46 Jesus’ parables of the hidden treasure and the pearl
Ephesians 2:1-7 Made alive in Christ

What about heaven and hell?

This Sunday at Good Shepherd
Questions that deserve an answer has been our worship series over the last six weeks. Last Sunday’s question: What is God’s response to suffering? In a nutshell, God doesn’t give us an explanation; but an incarnation. In Jesus, God gets tangled up in our flesh and blood, and enters the depths of our human suffering. Jesus suffers with us. And Jesus suffers for us – to free us from its grip and bring us into his resurrection. Jesus brings us into God’s grand restoration plan.

As the final part of this series, Sunday’s topic touches on eternity: What about heaven and hell?

There are lots of ideas about this in pop-culture:
“I don’t want to be floating around on the clouds playing a harp!”
“If I do enough good things, then that should be enough to get me into heaven.”
“I want to go to hell because that’s where the wildest parties will be!”
“Really wicked people like mass-murderers deserve to go to hell.”

What is heaven like?  How does a person end up there?
What is hell like?  How does a person end up there?

Best to get the good oil on this from Jesus. There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12 NLT)

Sunday Readings:
Matthew 25:31-46 Jesus’ parable of the sheep and the goats.
Luke 16:19-31 Jesus’ parable of the rich man and Lazarus.

The Offering Bowl
A gift of generosity too numerous to count
The offering bowl a creation to behold
After standing all week in a cupboard alone
Of a Sunday fills with coin and note
With gifts given from sweat and toil
To stand on the altar, the foot of the cross
Filled to the brim
It becomes the focus of what can be done
To ease the world of its endless charm
And offer peace and hope
To those who concede to the work of the contents
That get shared around; to return in an infinite form
Of the human mind in creation's way.

Stephen Zanker

God’s response to suffering

This Sunday at Good Shepherd
In our current worship series: Questions that deserve an answer, we’re tackling some of the intellectual challenges of our time.  If you read Matthew 22, Jesus responds to some awkward questions with impeccable logic and great wisdom.  It’s worth a few hours of Bible study and reflection!

Over the last five weeks we’ve explored: Does science disprove God?  Can we trust the New Testament accounts of Jesus? Who is Jesus?  What is the historical evidence for Jesus’ resurrection?  And: Is there only ONE way to God?

This Sunday we look at suffering.  The question is often posed: “Why does God allow tragedy and suffering?”  If someone asks you this, I suggest you follow up with a question: “Are you asking this as an intellectual question; or as a question from your own personal experience?”

The response will determine how you explore the question: whether it’s primarily a theological/ philosophical issue; or pastoral care. This Sunday we will be addressing the latter: providing a caring and compassionate response to people in pain (that is also theologically solid!).

Our theme: What is God’s response to suffering?

Sunday Readings:
John 3:13-17 Jesus must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.
Romans 8:14-25 Along with creation, we groan waiting for our redemption of our bodies.

In Kingdom Kids this term, our focus is “Serving in our Church”.  Last Sunday Georgie Schuster came in to share with us the gifts that God has given her to serve in our church.  She reminded us that the Bible doesn’t say you need to be an adult to serve – anyone of any age can!

If you are a parent or grandparent, please remember to have your child or grandchild serve alongside you in your ministry area at least once this term.  This will give the children an opportunity to think about where they might like to serve in their church as they grow.

Fathers’ Day
On Fathers’ Day, 6th September, we would like to invite families to arrive at 10am in the school library.  Craft materials will be available for families to respond creatively to one of the Bible readings for the day.  At 10.25am we will all move into the church to worship.  At the end of the service, families will be invited to come forward and share their creative responses.  We hope you can join us!

St Paul’s Hahndorf 125th Anniversary Celebrations
You are cordially invited to join with the members of St Paul’s Lutheran Church Hahndorf on Sunday 13th September 2015 to commemorate the 125th Anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of our church building at 10 Main Street Hahndorf.

The event will commence with a thanksgiving service at 10.15 a.m. and followed at 12.00 noon by a shared community lunch (any savoury and sweet finger food contribution is appreciated) in the adjoining hall. The afternoon will feature a memorabilia display including the contents of the 1890 and 1990 time capsules.

Your presence will not only help us better share our historic and cultural legacy with the local community, but as we look to the past, it will help us understand our relevance to the present community and how we can continue to serve in it!
