Gifted to Grow

This Sunday at Good Shepherd
Last Sunday Pr Noel shared God’s plan to restore broken humanity back to His original purpose.  While we get glimpses of this in Jesus’ ministry, we are guaranteed in his resurrection that God will complete his restoration in us!

At the right time he will bring everything together under the authority of Christ — everything in heaven and on earth. (Ephesians 1:10 NLT)  And all will be made right again!

Question: Since Jesus returned to heaven, how is God carrying out that plan?  Through us!  His people, His church, the body of Christ.  God gives us spiritual gifts so we can participate in God’s restoration plan.

Your part in God’s plan is to exercise the spiritual gifts he has given you to bless others; to be an agent of God’s restoration so they can grow into Christ-likeness; and to grow the body of Christ in faith, hope and love. Our theme this Sunday: Gifted to Grow.

Sunday Readings: 1 Corinthians 1:1-27

Baby Zone
Did you know that Baby Zone runs during the school term at our 10.30am services for 0-2 year olds?  In Baby Zone we talk about the same simple topic for one month.
Our topic for November is:  God Gives Me Food
Jesus Gave Food to His Friends  (See John 21:9-13)
God Gives Us Food (See Genesis 1:29)
This month your child will:
  • hear words and songs about God’s gift of food;
  • feel thankful for good food.
(The food at Baby Zone is only pretend but the fun is real!)
If you haven't been to Baby Zone before we would like to encourage you and your toddler to come and find out about Jesus’ love!

We also would like to read out a list of names of those being remembered.  If you would like a loved one’s name to be read out, please supply their name and date of death to our Church Office – or write it on your Connect Card at Sunday worship.

Gifted to restore

This Sunday at Good Shepherd
This week we start a new sermon series on Spiritual Gifts called ‘Your part in God’s plan’. In this series we will look at what Spiritual Gifts are and God’s purpose for them in our lives and the life of the church. During the course of this series our prayer is that you will grow in your understanding of the unique Spiritual Gifts God has given you and how you can best use them for his purposes.

We begin the series this week by looking at God’s master plan for Spiritual Gifts under the theme ‘Gifted to restore.’

Staff changes in 2016
Sophie Gerrie will not be continuing in her role as Youth Ministry Team Leader in 2016. Sophie is leaving our staff team to take up full time study to complete her Masters in Divinity through Tabor College. Currently Sophie is dividing her time between her staff role at Good Shepherd and her study. While it will be sad to see Sophie leave after faithfully serving on our staff team for 6 years, we pray God’s blessing upon her future studies.

To ensure a smooth transition in leadership of the Youth and Young Adult ministries, we have already begun to advertise a revised version of Sophie’s role. Your prayers for God’s provision for a suitable replacement would be greatly appreciated.

God made famous through generosity

This Sunday at Good Shepherd
God made famous is our current worship series at Good Shepherd. Over the last few weeks we have looked at how we can spread the fame of God through radical acts of love, through the way we respond to suffering and through sharing the life changing message of Jesus.

This Sunday we finish off the series by looking at God made famous through generosity. As we work through what the apostle Paul wrote to the Christians in Corinth we will not only hear how God promises to provide all we need to be generous, but also how our generosity will inspire people to give thanks to God. Our generosity will point people to our generous God and further spread the fame of Jesus.

Sunday Readings: 2 Corinthians 8:1-14 NLT and 2 Corinthians 9:6-13 NLT

A Vicar for Good Shepherd
We are pleased to announce that Dan Mueller has been assigned to Good Shepherd for his 6 month vicarage placement beginning in mid-December. Dan is in his fourth year of training at Australian Lutheran College to be a pastor in the Lutheran Church. Dan has already been leading worship and preaching at Good Shepherd as part of his fieldwork for his studies.

For those of you who are not familiar with vicarage placement, essentially it is a 6 month internship where Dan gets to experience life in a congregation full time and serving as a ‘student pastor’ under the supervision of Pastor Rolly.

As members of Good Shepherd you play an important role in Dan’s vicarage by encouraging and supporting him in his development and welcoming him and his family.

God made famous through the good news of Jesus

This Sunday at Good Shepherd
Our current preaching series is called “God made famous — spreading the fame of Jesus.” So far we've looked at why God is worthy of fame: He's our Creator and Saviour. In the last few weeks we've seen how God is made famous through our crazy acts of love, and in the midst of our sufferings and trials. This Sunday, we look at God made famous in the good news of Jesus.

At the start of his letter to the Romans, Paul writes that the ‘gospel is the power of God for salvation’ (Rom 1:16). But what exactly is the “gospel”? Is the gospel simply good news — information about an event that happened in history? No! The gospel is something that happens today, here and now. Through the gospel God powerfully acts to save us.

For this reason, Paul confesses that he is not ashamed of the gospel.
In this sermon, we'll see why we also need not be ashamed of the gospel. In fact we are called to spread the fame of God by telling others of how the good news of Jesus has changed our lives.

Sunday Readings: Mark 8:31–38, Romans 1:16–17

Maranatha Health

This is a short term placement in the Maranatha Children’s Clinic (www.maranathahealth.org) in Fort Portal, Uganda. Doctors are being sought for December 2015 – February 2016 who are interested in working with a medical team to serve the community in addressing childhood health issues, while another Doctor is on leave. The majority of the team are Ugandans, with support from the Director of Maranatha Health Uganda, Dr Michael Findlay and/or a British doctor. This is a well-run clinic, which sees approximately 300 patients/week, presenting with a range of interesting and more routine conditions. Given the lack of infrastructure and trained personnel in the other nearby clinics, Maranatha Health fills a critical gap in infant and childhood health.

Enquiries are welcome, via Dr Michael Findlay (michael.findlay@maranathahealth.org). We look forward to hearing from you and beginning your adventure!

God made famous in our trials

This Sunday at Good Shepherd
God made famous is our current worship series at Good Shepherd. Over the last two weeks, Pr Noel has laid a great platform.  God created us for HIS glory, and we see that glory most clearly in Jesus.  We reflect God’s glory in radical acts of love: to the marginalised, to those different to us, and even to those who treat us badly!

In our previous worship series, we answered the question: What is God’s Response to Suffering?  This Sunday we’re exploring OUR response to hardships, afflictions and suffering. Jesus never promised us a trouble-free life in this broken world. When it hits the fan in life, one thing is for sure: it changes us – for better, or for worse.

What can we learn from Jesus about handling hardships?
As followers of Jesus, how can we give glory to God even in our trials?

Come along Sunday and find out: God made famous in our trials.

Sunday Readings: 2 Corinthians 4:5-11,16-18 NLT and 2 Corinthians 12:7b-10 NLT

Good Shepherd Remembrance Service
Following a suggestion from our widows, we’re planning a Remembrance Service for Saturday November 7th, 1:30pm.  The aims are to remember loved ones who have died, to share our grief with one another, and to seek God’s comfort in Jesus.

As part of that service, we would like to offer family members and friends an opportunity to light a candle.  If someone can organise a suitable sand tray or stand for lit candles, please let me know.

We also would like to read out a list of names of those being remembered.  If you would like a loved one’s name to be read out, please supply their name and date of death to our Church Office – or write it on your Connect Card at Sunday worship.

Following the service, there will be an afternoon cuppa in the hall.

Pr Rolly Stahl

Thanks from Maranatha Health
The Maranatha Health Spring Market stall on the 21st September was a buzz of conversation, buying and serving. With your help we raised almost $900 for the work of the children's clinic and community development program in Uganda.

A special thanks to those who donated baked goods, plants, crafts and fresh produce. Also to the Kingdom Kids children who prayed for Maranatha Health all of term 2, and shared the answers to prayer through their creative artwork in the hall.

If you didn’t receive a Maranatha Health Prayer Needs handout and would like one as a prayer prompt please see Keren Sutton.

Our next fundraising stall will be held in November and we'd love your help, so put your creativity to work in any way you can to support the vital work of Maranatha Health.
