Making a “God” of Self

This Sunday at Good Shepherd
We’re in the middle of our series “Breaking free of the seven deadly sins.” So far we’ve examined: sloth, greed, and anger. This Sunday we explore pride. In a nutshell, pride is ‘making a “god” of self’.

Pride is perhaps the deadliest of the seven deadly sins. If we could conquer the six others, our pride over that achievement would still bring us undone! There's a deep irony in the old German maxim: “Too much humility is also pride!”

Scripture has a lot to say about pride, but in particular we'll be unpacking two Biblical images that depict the destructive nature of pride:

1. being “puffed up” with pride, like some in the Corinthian church; and
2. imagining ourselves sitting on a throne, exalted high in a seemingly impregnable citadel rising out of the seas (cf. Ezekiel 28:2).

Thankfully God's Word pricks our puffed up pride, and casts us down from our human-fashioned thrones!

If any congregation members would like to join us at this time, bring your special wedding items and let us enjoy them with you.
