Mary took about a pint of
pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his
feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. John 12:3 NIV
If
someone else was about to shout you one meal worth a year's wages (say
$60,000), how would it make you feel?
How would you respond?
The
perfume Mary poured over Jesus' feet was nard, made from the flowers and spikes
of a plant that grows on the slopes of the Himalayas,
4000 metres above sea level (nardostachy
jatamansi?). It was rare and difficult to obtain. It could
be found in the bedrooms of kings, or maybe among the wealthy for burial
purposes.
Mary
anoints King Jesus in lieu of his burial.
Jesus receives this extravagant act of worth-ship … because he knows the
heart from which it came.
Mary took
the most precious thing she possessed, and spent it all on Jesus. Love is not love if it nicely calculates the
cost. Love gives its all, and love’s
only regret is that it has not still more to give.
(William
Barclay, The Gospel of John Volume 2, p.127-8)
The cost of our ransom was
beyond measure. Not with silver or gold,
but
with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 1 Peter 1:19 NIV
If you had a year's salary
or time to use for the cause of Christ, how would you use it? How can love’s extravagance be reflected in
your acts of worth-ship?
