19th August 2012

WHAT’S NEXT SPORTSFANS?

Paul told the Corinthians, “Do you not know that the runners in a stadium all race, but only one receive the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. Now everyone who competes exercises self-control in everything. However they do it to receive a perishable crown, but we [Christians] an imperishable one!” [Didn’t Sally Pearson, after winning gold, highlight the self-control required in everything to compete?]

As Australians we are said to be a sport loving nation. We love the cricket, tennis, all codes of football, golf, motor sports such as Bathurst 1000, F1 and MotoGP, the list goes on; and we as a nation have excelled on the world stage in most of those sports. And now with the completion of the XXXth Olympic Games in London we have seen many sports contested all now run and won - although not by many Aussie teams.

During the Olympics I was thinking about our current sermon series, “Everyday mission for everyday people” and thinking that I hadn’t seen any placards bearing “John 3:16”. Sporting events can be a great place for everyday mission as an everyday participant or everyday spectator. Here at Good Shepherd we actively involved in the sporting community in cricket, table tennis and netball and so there are opportunities to be physically and spiritually involved in a sport.

Watching the opening of the Olympics and hearing Emeli Sandè singing “Abide with me”, particularly the 3rd verse I thought what a great anthem this would be for our sporting clubs
I need thy presence every passing hour.
What but thy grace can foil the tempter's power?
Who, like thyself, my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.
[I’d change the last line to, “Should I win or lose, O Lord, abide with me]
And we know than in sport it is not inevitably about winning but competing to your best and being humble in winning and graceful in defeat. And so as Christians there are times that we will repeat the words of Peter found in Acts 3:6, “I have neither silver nor gold, but what I have, I give to you…..” As we are actively or passively involved in sport - cricket, table tennis, netball, football, marbles, whatever let’s see the sporting arena as our mission field given to us by God to sow water and reap to His glory and honour.

Just a bit about the teams;
The Para Vista Lutheran Cricket Club competes in the Churches and Community Cricket Association. In the 2011/2012 season we fielded an A grade and B grade team. This season both teams reached the Grand Final but unfortunately unlike the previous season when both teams were premiers, this season neither team was successful.

The club holds several records in the Association being the record number of A grade premierships -13, the most A grade premierships in a row – 8 and the only club whose A and B teams have played off in an A grade Grand Final against each other.

So what’s next cricket fans?
The club is always looking for new members. If you are interested please contact John Dolling 0409819864

The Para Vista Lutheran table tennis club consists of a small core of church members supplemented by friends and contacts. Primarily it is about friendships and enjoying getting some beneficial exercise, but over the years our club has been fortunate enough to have quite a number of premiership or runners-up teams.
For many years we have entered one or more teams in the local Association (NEHTTA) in the winter competition and sometimes the summer competition when run by the Association. This association involves clubs extending from Athelstone to Golden Grove to Parafield Gardens. Because of the number of activities held in the church hall on a Wednesday night, the Para Vista team hires tables at the Newton Sports centre.

When players are available we also enter a team in the metropolitan Combined Churches Association, spring competition. Jim Kraft and Jason Yap see table tennis as their mission field. Jim said, “While we don’t actively promote our Christian faith, it is non-the-less an outreach opportunity that the Holy Spirit may choose to use through our attitude during matches –such as humility in winning and graciousness in defeat”

How to get involved in table tennis:
If you are new and interested in playing, or a long-standing member who is interested in a comeback, please contact Jim Kraft on 8369 2180 or speak to him or Jason Yap at church. This current winter season we only have one team competing, which is somewhat disappointing.

The Para Vista Lutheran Netball Team was formed 18 years ago and currently play at an indoor stadium at Golden Grove, each Monday night. The team, mostly members from Good Shepherd, have had times when they had to call on outside netballers – this has been a wonderful way of having these ladies embrace the Christian ethics. Several ladies who have no church connections readily join in asking God for a need in prayer.

One of the most wonderful undertakings of our PV Team has been the mission work that has happened at the Adelaide Women’s Prison.  Andrea Brooks responded to a request on Life FM for a Christian netball team to go in and play a team from the women’s’ prison. This was a challenge to the girls but all were willing to be involved.  There were certain restrictions on all the players and the support team, but the team prays before going in to the reception area and through to the court to play.
There is much laughter during these games. They have asked our team where they go to church but our team is restricted in how much they can share of their faith. However by being an example the AWP girls have curtailed their language and chosen not to take cigarettes on to the court.

We have had a couple of seasons where, because the courts needed repairing, we could not go the AWP. But God works in wonderful ways and we pray that AWP ladies lives can be changed by positive Christian witness through our netball players

Pray for these Netballers from our Good Shepherd church that they will always be what God needs them to be out in our community.

Want to be part of the netball team?  Speak to Andrea Brooks at church or call 0407799772

Did you know?
Chariots of Fire is a 1981 British film. It tells the fact-based story of two athletes in the 1924 Olympics: Eric Liddell, a devout Scottish Christian who runs for the glory of God, and Harold Abrahams, a British Jew who runs to overcome prejudice. The film's title was inspired by the line, "Bring me my chariot of fire," from the William Blake poem adapted into the popular British hymn "Jerusalem"; the hymn is heard at the end of the film. The original phrase "chariot(s) of fire" is from 2 Kings 2:11 and 6:17.

"Their bodies may belong to others, but their dreams are still their own"
Street Dreams is a powerful film exploring the world of girls caught in the South East Asian sex industry (usually via being trafficked) and those who are trying to save them. It will be shown around Adelaide for the first time in a week or so. Not only is it a story of dreams destroyed, but also of dreams redeemed through the work of Destiny Rescue (Australia, Thailand) and FOCUS (The Philippines), who are both Christian aid organisations and key characters in the film.
To watch the trailer, find out more, or for ticket info and sales, at http://streetdreamsdoco.wordpress.com/oztour/
OR, call Destiny Rescue on 1-300-738-761.

Street Dreams is showing in Adelaide from 25 - 28 August 2012:

25 August, Craigmore Christian Church, Craigmore, 6:00 pm
26 August, Mercury Cinema, Adelaide CBD, 6:00 pm
27 August, Parks Community Centre, Angle Park, 7:00 pm
28 August, Adelaide College of Ministries, Klemzig, 7:00 pm

Don’t miss your opportunity to see this very moving, and ultimately, positive story. It has real potential to bring new life to many, many girls trapped in the sex trade.
