Asking God

Golfer Arnold Palmer once played a series of exhibition matches in Saudi Arabia. The king was so impressed that he proposed to give Palmer a gift. Palmer demurred; "It really isn't necessary, your Highness. I'm honoured to have been invited."
"I would be deeply upset," replied the king, "if you would not allow me to give you a gift."
Palmer thought for a moment and said, "All right. How about a golf club? That would be a beautiful momento of my visit to your country."
The next day, delivered to Palmer's hotel, was the title to a golf club. Thousands of acres, trees, lakes, clubhouse, and so forth.
The moral of this story is: In the presence of a King, don't ask for small gifts!
Over thirty years ago our church was asking God for big things and God answered. He gave us the school, our church, past missions. I wonder what He is asking us to ask for right now as a fellowship? May the Spirit deliver us from small mindedness and a lack of faith, and enable us to ask God for those things He wills to give to us in these significant days.
Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. Ephesians 3:20-21

Children’s and Family Ministry

Kingdom Kids Visitor
This Sunday Bruce Hulme will be visiting the 10:30am Kingdom Kids and singing some songs with us. We are looking forward to seeing all of the kids there!
*Kool Zone kids – don’t forget to bring a coin to put into the “Wholly Cow’s” mouth! We have saved over $65 but need to raise $138 for a cow in Cambodia.
*Kindy Zone (3-5 year olds) is seeking a supervising adult to help us on Sunday 5th September for the 8:45am or 10:30am service. If you think you could help, please call the church office, see Tanya Harrison or email lcarson@paravista.org.au.

NEW Bible Activity Kits – Now Available for Borrowing
This Sunday morning is the launch of our new Bible Activity Kits. They contain a children’s Bible story book and a game or some toys or a DVD that support the story and “Faith 5” bookmarks. They also have laminated instructions containing questions about the story, prayer points and suggested activities to do at home.
We hope that your children will really enjoy taking these kits home. We also hope that these kits can be a great tool for parents as you have the privilege of introducing your children to God’s love for them. Your whole family can learn together and share your spiritual learning journey.

School Holiday Activity
We are hoping to set up a ‘Bible Story Trail’ in the hall on one morning during the September/October holidays. This would be an activity that parents could do together with their children (aged 2-11 years). The children would receive a prize for answering the trail questions and could also do some craft activities. If you are interested in helping to organise or supervise this holiday activity, please contact Tanya Harrison. More information will be available soon.

Youth Alive is being held on Saturday 4th September at Paradise Community Church, 7pm start. We are absolutely blessed to have special guests Hillsong United playing for us. Tickets are $15 each, or $10 for 10+. We will not be taking a bus or running this as a youth event, but if anyone wants a ticket let me know. I will be ordering some tickets in the coming weeks so you can buy them through me for $10. You will need to make your own transport arrangements.

The scale of the devastation, tragedy and human suffering caused by the flooding in Pakistan is almost beyond comprehension. It is in times like these that we have an opportunity as Christians to rise up and share the love of Jesus to our global neighbours who are in great need. PLAS PRAI CAMBODIA MISSION - January or July 2011 Information Afternoon - Sunday 26th September 2.30pm at Bethlehem, Adelaide. An opportunity to join a grassroots trip to Northern Cambodia - travel off the beaten track and experience the real Cambodia. Contact roger.whittall@lca.org.au for further details. The Plas Prai Foundation is an independent educational charity, registered as an NGO in Cambodia and incorporated in South Australia.


Safe Place Training for Para Vista
It is hoped that churches provide an environment where all attending are safe - physically, emotionally and spiritually. Following Christ’s command to love one another we are to treat each other with respect and dignity. Unfortunately history demonstrates that the church is a place of grace but not perfect morality.
The LCA has developed a Safe Place Policy. This policy deals with the interactions between adults (over 18). This alerts members to dangers and consequences of inappropriate behavior towards other people in the church. It also provides mechanisms and procedures, based on the Word of God, by which we can work through painful and serious matters.
We, along with the LCA, encourage all involved in ministry with people over 18, especially Team Leaders, to complete the training. This will help make Para Vista a safe place for all.

There are now 3 volunteers to assist with maintaining the gardens around the church. On areas allocated to these volunteers it means we will be able to maintain 40% of our grounds. If you can spare 2 hours per month to help maintain the other 60% please contact John Dolling jdolling@paravista.org.au or 0409 819 864. Our grounds are the first contact for visitors and are what the general community see. What message would un-kept grounds give about our congregation?

A person after God’s own heart?
From ancient times until now, we often use the word “heart” as a metaphor to talk about what goes on inside us. It includes our thoughts, self-talk, memories, feelings, desires, convictions, personality, motivation and will. It describes the inner reason behind our actions … and therefore what sort of persons we really are.
Jesus made it clear that our attitudes, words and actions come out of our hearts:
• For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. (Matthew 12:34 NIV)
• For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come… (Mark 7:20 NRSV)
Jesus also states that the dearest object of our affection takes pride of place in our hearts: For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Matt 6:21) The treasure of our hearts is what we consistently turn to for security, worth, or meaning. It is either the living God; or one of many substitutes or “idols”.
Our heart is either open or closed to God. One of Jesus’ beatitudes: Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. (Matt 5:8) God not only looks into our hearts, but wants to take up residence in our hearts - so he can renew our hearts, transform our character, and bless the world through us.
The Old Testament Proverbs remind us that God looks not just at our outward actions, but also into our hearts. The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but the LORD tests the heart. (Prov 17:3 NIV) That’s why we’re urged: Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. (Prov 4:23 NIV)
Again in the Old Testament, there’s one described as a person after God’s heart. David was Israel’s second king, yet the first to receive the promise of a royal messiah through his family line (2 Samuel 7). He ruled from about 1005 to 965 BC. Despite making some great moral blunders, David was regarded as a great king of God's people. God’s opinion of David: I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do. (Acts 13:22 NIV)
In our upcoming worship series commencing 22nd August, we will look at some stories from the life of David. Hopefully, we will gain some insights about God’s place in our internal world. Yet more importantly, I pray the Holy Spirit will do “heart surgery” in each of us – so you and I will grow as persons after God’s heart.
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me. (Ps 51:10 NRSV)

Women's Fellowship
Bread bag tags are needed, undamaged, any colour with or without printing for charity fundraising for the Mental Illness Fellowship of SA Inc. (MFSA). 5,000kg of bread bag tags collected per year (13 million tags) will bring @ 1 cent each, $130,000.00. Tags can be left in the black box provided under the pigeon holes. Women's Fellowship will pick up and deliver them periodically to MFSA Sunflower Shop – 1267 North East Road, St Agnes.

Lutherans for Life Conference
How do Christians speak out to a world in need? How can we bring the promise of life to a culture of death? On Saturday 28th August from 9 00am to 3.00pm at Australian Lutheran College, 104 Jeffcott Street North Adelaide, Lutherans for Life are holding their annual conference with speakers addressing these very issues. Mother of five and prominent campaigner against the sexualisation of young girls, Selena Ewing will be speaking on motherhood and the whole community. Family First politician Dennis Hood will address the fight for promoting life values in parliament. Madeleine Wiedemann will speak about her own journey through abortion and to baptism in Christ, and Pastor Fraser Pearce will speak on forgiveness is this realm of sexuality and ethics. Our grounds!
Volunteers are still required.
2 down 8 to go. In the last 2 Weekly News, I have asked for people to assist in ensuring our grounds are maintained in their present good condition. This would entail approximately 2 hours per month.
We now have 2 volunteers. Interestingly the second person to volunteer is not a member and worships elsewhere but is keen to ensure our grounds remain in their present good condition. 10 volunteers @ 2 hours a month would get the job done.

General

Facilities Maintenance
Manse air conditioner
$1850 of repairs were identified to bring the 20 year old manse air conditioner up to good working order. In the foreseeable future there could have been another $600 of upgrade required. The ducting was also faulty. The Board, on recommendation from both the Facilities Management Team and Finance Team, decided to replace the current air conditioner. This was completed this week.
This will not affect this year's budget as the money will be taken from the Asset Replacement Fund. This account was established in 2008 and is funded through any surplus from the previous year. In both 2008 and 2009 money was deposited into this account. It is used to replace damaged, obsolete and non functioning plant and equipment.

Electrical Testing
For the safety of users, all electrical equipment is tested. Electrical items that are regularly plugged and unplugged (vacuum cleaners) are tested annually whereas static items such as computers are tested every 5 years. Every item tested is the tagged with the testing details. If you find an electrical item not tagged could you please inform the church office.

If you know where you want to go, you'll have a much better chance of getting there.

Questions that Deserve an Answer


We humans are constantly asking questions as we try to make sense out of our lives, relationships with other people, the world around us, and of course God. What we think about God pretty well impacts our views on everything else in life.

Over the last 7 weeks, we’ve explored some of the common questions raised:
1. Why is the gospel so important?
2. Who is Jesus?
3. Did Jesus really rise from the dead?
4. Can we trust the Bible?
5. What about suffering?
6. Why believe in a Creator?
7. Does God still do miracles?

Our hope and prayer has been that God would grow our confidence in Him – and in sharing Him with others. We’ve received some encouraging feedback about this series from a number of you. Thank you!

This coming Sunday, the question is: 8. Can Jesus change my life-story? It will be the last part of this series. I suspect most of us find that - in spite of our best efforts - making positive changes in our character, attitudes, habits and behaviour is really difficult. As followers of Jesus, we have the supernatural help of the Holy Spirit and the support of other followers of Jesus within his family… yet we still find it hard!

So when people wonder whether Jesus can help them with change, it’s an opportunity for you to share something of your story. What difference has Jesus made in your life? That’s a question that deserves an answer from every follower of Jesus. How would you answer it clearly, concisely, and graciously? Come along and we’ll explore this some more on Sunday!

School Open Day, 30th Anniversary and Opening of the Gymnasium


Last Sunday we celebrated a special 10.30am service for the Good Shepherd School's Open Day, 30th Anniversary and Opening of the Gymnasium. It was a wonderful time of celebration. The children lead us in songs and prayers during the service. After the official opening of the new gymnasium, we saw some fantastic skipping and heard some great songs by the Junior Choir. A warm lunch of soup and sausages was served followed by tea, coffee and cake. There were activities for the children to do as people wandered or were taken for tours around the classrooms.

Our school community at Good Shepherd would like to say a huge thank you to all members of our Good Shepherd congregation who helped to make the special celebrations on the weekend such a great success. We give thanks to God for the wonderful relationship that we enjoy with our congregation as together we seek to share the hope that we have in Jesus with the community around us. We will continue to learn about the “Mystery” of the week.
Kool Zone are saving up to buy a wholly cow (or a whole cow?) through the Australian Lutheran World Service. When you loan a Cambodian a cow through the cow bank scheme, you help them to become independent. The first calf is returned for another family. Meanwhile, the children have milk to help them grow strong. Kool Zone aims to raise $138 for a cow this term.

Men’s 4WD and fishing trip
Do you own a 4WD and enjoy taking it off road? Do you enjoy having a go at some trout fishing? Do you like camping? On the 18th-19th September we have planned a camping trip on a property just out of Spalding. There will be opportunities to do some four-wheel-driving. A trained 4WD instructor will be on hand to give you some driving tips if needed. There is also a stream on the property which is good for trout fishing. A $25 per vehicle access fee applies.
We will be camping out and you will need to bring all your own camping gear and food. We encourage dads to bring their sons. The weekend is also suitable to invite men from outside of the church to attend so bring a mate. We will be leaving the church at 6.30am on Saturday 18th September, or you can make your own way and meet in Spalding at 9am. For more information talk to Pastor Noel after service, or contact him at the office on 8263 5087 or nkluge@paravista.org.au If you do not own a 4WD and would like to come please let Pastor Noel know as there will be some spare seats in vehicles.


Women's Fellowship
Bread bag tags are needed, undamaged, any colour with or without printing for charity fundraising for the Mental Illness Fellowship of SA Inc. (MFSA). 5,000kg of bread bag tags collected per year (13 million tags) will bring @ 1 cent each, $130,000.00. Tags can be left in the black box provided under the pigeon holes. Women's Fellowship will pick up and deliver them periodically to MFSA Sunflower Shop – 1267 North East Road, St Agnes.

The Metropolitan North Zone of Lutheran Women of South Australia Fellowship Day will be held at the Salisbury Lutheran Church, corner Waterloo Corner Road and Winzor Street on Wednesday 18th August 2010 beginning with a cuppa at 9.30am. The program is: 10.00am welcome. 10.15am bible study led by Pastor Wayne Boehm. 11.30am guest speaker Jenny Pfitzner on ALWS. 12.00pm lunch (shared) in hall with soup provided. 1.30pm guest speaker, Helen Lockwood on LCC. 2.00pm closing devotion. There will also be several entertainment items between the planned program. Offering will be donated for LWSA funds. RSVP phone 8281 6890.

Food For Families
Do you know of anyone who could be blessed by having a meal taken to them? Particularly those people not involved in a fellowship group, not just because they are ill, but for any reason where you know that person or family are labouring under life's load on their life at this time. The BordererS will be performing on Saturday 21st August 2010, at the Prospect RSL Club on Willcox Avenue starting at 7.00pm. Tickets can be purchased for $15.00 each from the church office

Friends of Lutheran Archives meeting. The early missionary experience at Hermannsburg - what lessons are there for today's Australia? Speaker John Strehlow is the grandson of missionary Carl Strehlow, and has written a book about his grandparents. Fishing and Boating Swap Meet and Fete

Where to now, for our grounds?
One down 9 to go! Last week I requested volunteer help to enable us to maintain our gardens in their present excellent condition. So far there has been only 1 enquiry. The ideal scenario would be to have 10 volunteers. This would enable a small section of the garden to be allocated to each person/group. If we get sufficient help it would only entail 2 hours per month. Jobs include cutting lawns on Montague Road, spraying the courtyard twice a year or tending a small garden plot.
If we don’t get the volunteers, we will need to pay to get the job done. I would be very disappointed if we had to do this as this money would be best used in people ministry.

Time-Out, Listening to Jesus is a book of Christian devotions for 2011. Written by Australian writers, there is a devotion for every day of the calendar year.
Each meditation is a “time-out” of about 3 minutes and includes a Bible reading, some thoughts on that passage and a short prayer. The thoughts are life-related and centred on the message of God’s love for people shown in Jesus Christ.

Weekly News 8th August 2010

Praise God for our school!

This Sunday, 8th August we celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the opening of our school at our 10.30 am service. As a part of this celebration we will also have the official opening of our brand new gymnasium which was made possible through Federal Government funding.
The growth of this school from its beginning in transportable buildings to the wonderful facilities we now have is quite a remarkable testament to the vision God laid on the hearts of the people who started the school 30 years ago. Their vision was to build a school that would provide a wonderful Christian environment for their children to learn in and also be a significant connection point to the community for spreading the Good News of Jesus.
Every year over three hundred children are taught the Good News of Jesus in the context of the school curriculum. The Good News of Jesus also filters out to the families through our weekly chapel services, our special worship services and most importantly through the living witness of the Christian staff and families in our school.
I have lost count of the times people have said to me, “There is something different and special about our school.” I firmly believe that difference is the presence of Jesus in the school through all the Christian staff and families who send their children there.
This Sunday together with all the school community we will have the opportunity to thank God for the gift of our school and the thirty years it has been running. Can I encourage you as part of our church to warmly welcome all the visitors from our school? May they be able to see the love of Jesus in us through our welcome.
I also want to continue to encourage every family who has a connection with the school to make the most of the opportunities God gives you throughout the school year to share something of the hope we have in Jesus. We have an incredible opportunity to witness to the love of Jesus right on our door step through our school. Let’s make the most of it. I hope you can join us to celebrate this wonderful event this Sunday.

Habitat for Humanity Team leading 6pm Service this Sunday
Several people from our church were part of a Habitat Team who recently served in Cambodia. They will share about their experiences as part of the regular 6.00 pm service this Sunday. Come along and hear about their trip and how God impacted them through this experience.


Children’s & Family Ministry
Kingdom Kids
During the 8:45 service, the children go out to Junior Kingdom Kids (for 3 – 8 year olds).
There will be no Kingdom Kids during the 10.30 service this Sunday due to the School celebration.
If you enjoy helping children, the ‘Kingdom Kids’ teachers would really appreciate your help. We still need some more people to be the 2nd adult providing supervision (not teaching) in most of the zones. For more information, see Tanya Harrison.


Playgroup
Playgroup has also resumed for this term, meeting on Wednesdays morning in the church hall. For more information call Sharon Ortega on: 8264 4123.

Ignite Youth: Metro Christian Life Week (CLW) camp was held at Pt Hughes in the second week of the holidays. I went along with a bunch of youth from the community. It is safe to say that everyone had a fantastic time, connected with some amazing people and learnt heaps about themselves and God. Metro CLW will be held again in the September school holidays, so keep an eye out for registration forms in the next week or two.

The 'Rolling in Dough’ and luncheon advertised at the Semaphore Lutheran Ladies Fellowship on Wednesday 11th August 2010 has been cancelled.

Face to Face
Face to Face is broadcast weekly on more than 300 radio stations across Australia. Face to Face is a 15 minute program which uses a contemporary easy listening style to reach the unchurched listener, offering words of gospel-centred hope to help people cope with life. Special programs are broadcast on Good Friday and on Christmas Day.

Where to now, for our grounds?
We often get very positive comments about how attractive and well kept our grounds are. We have been fortunate over the past 15 years to have some very dedicated people caring for them. Gavin Sickerdick, then Brian and Margaret Cleverly, Jason Herrmann and more recently Kevin Lane. Over the last 3 years Kevin has volunteered 2 days a week working in the garden as well as doing a whole range of maintenance tasks. We thank him for his dedication and the many tasks he undertook saving the congregation 1000's of dollars. Kevin has indicated at least in the short term, if not longer, he will be taking a break from his voluntary work.

This leaves us with a dilemma of how we continue to maintain our grounds. There are 3 options:
• find an individual/ several people who are willing to look after the grounds,
• Share work amongst a whole lot of people e.g. the courtyard needs to be sprayed twice a year, the lawn along Montague Road needs to be cut, trees along the eastern boundary require trimming and the garden weeded etc. The grounds could be maintained in there present condition if there were enough people/ groups who were willing to take over responsibility for a small section of the tasks,
• Pay to have grounds maintained. This option would take money that could better be used to further our mission.

• New “members information area” developed at the rear of the worship centre,
• Windows have been placed in doors to pastors’ offices,
• Pin up boards have been repositioned,
• New coloured vinyl on folding doors in the hall,
• New signage in church/hall,
• New plants positioned in the church and manse gardens.
