Welcome Harvest

Human attitudes, words and actions are like seeds and plants that bear fruit over time.  For thousands of years, people have noticed how this works out in life.

For example, we read in the ancient book of Job: As I have observed, those who plough evil and those who sow trouble reap it (Job 4:8 NIV).

James gives us a positive example: Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness (James 3:18 NIV).

Paul reminds his friends at Galatia – and us: You will always harvest what you plant.

What we sow and then reap will depend on the allegiance of our hearts: who or what is lord of our lives.  As Paul highlights:

Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful nature.
But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit.

Wanting for his readers the best harvest possible, Paul urges them – and us: So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up (Galatians 6:7b-9 NLT).

Sowing and harvesting features in a bunch of Jesus’ parables about the kingdom of God.
Last Sunday, we looked at Jesus’ parable of the sower (Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23).  This Sunday we look at Jesus’ parable of the wheat and weeds (Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43).

Jesus explains both parables, but they are NOT the same.  Each one tells us different things about the kingdom.  A few questions as we look towards this Sunday’s message:

What is the wheat in the field – and how did it get there?
What about the weeds – where did they come from?
What purpose might Jesus have in allowing the wheat and the weeds to grow together?
What does harvest time look like for each of these?

Jesus wants us – and every person in this world – to be part of the kingdom of our Father in heaven.  How might his delay in separating the wheat and weeds be a sign of his mercy? (see 1 Timothy 2:1-4,  2 Peter 3:9.)

Shalom!

Grow Ministries Faith at Home
Dear Church Family,
Hope for the future…
How do you define hope? What (or who) do you place your hope in? How has this impacted your life? Check out the Growing Faith at Home resources for some activities and things to talk about with your family. Hmmm, what picture comes to mind when you hear the word ‘hope’?
For those returning to school this week, or continuing their studies, God provides all that you need… He does, you know!
God bless you all!

July Support for the Family Hub
Sunday July 26th is our next food collection day in support of the Family Hub. This is also our first time back together as a community. Donations can be brought to either service or delivered to the church office during office hours next week (Tues-Fri 9am-3:30pm). As staff at the Hub have been on a well-earned break this week we have yet to receive a list of requirements for this month. Kathlene will provide these details early next week and they will be forwarded via email. Thanks for your continued support during 2020.

News from the Social Club
Three years ago the Good Shepherd Social Club had less than six participants in their Indoor Carpet Bowls activity. Active promotion of the club has seen those numbers increase significantly, with the club now catering to 29 active players! With only enough equipment for 20 players, the Social Club urgently needed to acquire another bowling mat and set of eight bowls. The club applied to the City of Tea Tree Gully in its recent round of Community Grants and was delighted recently to have that grant approved.  The new equipment has now been purchased, and the Good Shepherd Social Club wishes to extend its appreciation and thanks to the City of Tea Tree Gully for its support as it continues to offer an avenue for healthy, active participation and socialisation to the local community.

Little Lambs Opportunity!
With Covid-19 restrictions easing in South Australia, we are keen to reconnect face to face. Little Lambs Playgroup has been on hold through this time and we are looking forward getting back together.
Over time we have been blessed to have amazing servant hearts in our community. We thank and bless Amy and Rochelle who ran things last year and Emma who took over the reins this year before she had to go home to America. So we are looking for people who are interested in serving. We aren’t starting from scratch. We have some great ideas and a couple of helpers already. If you have some time on Friday mornings and would like to be part of this valuable time of connection and community, please let me know! Wonderful seed is being sown!
Please contact me on 08 8264 7966 or via the church office. Otherwise send me an email: georgie.schuster@paravista.org.au
I am happy to give you more details.
Many thanks,

Thanks from Maranatha Health to Good Shepherd
Just a shout-out to all the generous individuals who gave to Maranatha Health before the End of the Financial Year!
It has been a tough few months in Uganda (as it has been in many places around the world), and like many organisations, it has been difficult to plan for the various potential challenges we are facing. But despite the economic downturn in Australia, you responded with generosity and care.
Thanks everyone, for standing with us and the children of Uganda during this time.
If you would like to become an MH partner and set up regular donations to ensure the long term sustainability of our work, please visit www.givenow.com.au/maranathahealth to set up a monthly donation via credit card or direct debit.

A Welcome Place for Faith

But the one sown on the good ground – this is one who hears and understands the word, who does produce fruit and yields: some a hundred, some sixty, some thirty times what was sown.
(Matthew 13:23)
I think far too often, I read this passage and understand it from the analogical perspective of seeds of faith. Although this is a piece, I think, of what Jesus is speaking to this great crowd, notice the wording:
…the one sown…
He’s speaking about people.
Throughout the scriptures, individuals and communities have been planted in various places with some bearing fruit, others withering away. The struggle is real, isn’t it? The faith that is sown in our own hearts often needs tending so that we can bloom and produce fruit wherever we are.
This week, as we continue along the “Welcome” series, we’ll look at this welcome faith sown by the Great Gardener.
Read Matthew 13:1-23 for background study as we hear God speaking to us.

Grow Ministries Faith at Home
Dear Church Family
Jesus’ parable of the Sower and the seed gets you thinking. To be honest, there are times in my life where I have identified with all four categories! Knowing that God’s Word is important is one thing, but allowing time and space for it to take root, nourish and sustain me so that it can flourish can be another. I reap many benefits when I invest in his word. Imagine a world where we all bloom where we are planted! What would the landscape look like? Check out the Growing Faith at Home emailed resources for this week. Here is a child-friendly clip on this week’s parable. Follow it up with a chat about what it means.

The Food Centre is in great need of help and support from new volunteers willing to be placed on a rota to collect bread from the local bakery at Tea Tree Plaza one Sunday evening per month. If you would like to know more about how you can make a difference, please contact Maurice Clark on 8269 3396 or just call into The Food Centre and ask for James or Tracy to show you around and familiarise yourself with all of the "wrap around" services provided there.

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

Galatians 6:9 (NIV)

Welcome Rest!

“I want you to enjoy me more than just doing stuff for me!” These are the words I once heard from the Lord.  It wasn’t audible, but rather his Spirit communicating with my spirit.  As one who likes doing stuff, I am still working this out in my life – not because I’m under a burden of fear or condemnation, but because my Father in heaven wants something better for me than busy!

Busy robs me of peace because I start forgetting that God is in control.
Busy robs me of joy because I stop receiving life as a gift from God.
Busy robs me of love because I do not stop long enough to soak in God’s love.

The LORD invites us to rest in him: Be still and know I am God (Ps 46:10).

Solitude, stillness and silence are ancient spiritual disciplines which help us slow down long enough to enjoy God - rather than just doing stuff for Him.  I need to foster these for the health of my soul.  How is it with you?

Perfect rest is not about having a long holiday from work.
Perfect rest is a result of trusting our Father to take care of us!
Perfect rest is when our souls rest in the truth and grace of God above all else.
Perfect rest is being secure in Jesus.
Perfect rest is living as precious and loved children of the King.

Find rest, O my soul, in God alone;
    my hope comes from him.
He alone is my rock and my salvation;
he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
My salvation and my honour depend on God;
he is my mighty rock, my refuge.
Trust in him at all times, O people;
pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.   Psalm 62:5-8 NIV
May your unfailing love rest upon us, O LORD,
even as we put our hope in you.                                   Psalm 33:22 NIV

Shalom!

Grow Ministries Faith at Home
Dear Church Family,
Carrying things around can become exhausting! The longer you do it, the heavier it feels. So, what are you carrying? Worry that no one else understands? Memories of past hurts? Jesus invites us to bring our worries to him. Check out the emailed resource from Grow Ministries for things to talk about (don’t forget to listen!) and do as a family in this area.

I shared a child friendly link a few weeks ago of Andrew McDonough sharing his story of ‘Bob the Bird’, followed by a drawing lesson. Bob observes a range of people who hold onto their worries before he comes across Jesus… Check out what happens next! Here is the link again:

Well, Come In!

‘Whoever welcomes you, welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me, welcomes the one who sent me… And whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is a disciple, they will never lose their reward.’
Matthew 10:40, 42

It seems insignificant, doesn’t it? If I welcome a disciple with a cup of cold water, I never have to lose my reward.
Fantastic! Turn on the welcoming taps, everyone!
It would seem the bare minimum to simply bring water to someone on the journey, a disciple of Christ, an ambassador of God himself, but Jesus is getting at something much deeper. What does it really mean to welcome? How is a church corporately involved in welcoming all people? What does it look like?
As we begin our series, ‘More than Welcome,’ I hope you can reflect on the ways that we have welcomed people in a different way during these trying times. I hope you can see the reward of opening our hearts, minds and ears to people when our churches had to be closed.

Grow Ministries Faith at Home
Dear Church Family,
It is a wonderful experience to be welcomed somewhere.  The words ‘I feel comfortable/safe/at home’, come to mind.   It opens the door to connection, honest conversations and relationship! But when you think of it, there is more involved than putting a welcome door mat out the front and hoping that it will do the job. It takes time, words and action. The blessings are definitely worth it, but a personal investment is involved.
This week Growing Faith at Home talks about ‘Welcoming Others’. Maybe now is the ideal time to check out and implement some of their ideas! If you are on our emailing list you will find them attached.
Pastor Reid’s message on Sunday is called ‘A Drink of Water’.  Hmmm, I wonder what opportunities might pop up for you this week?
God bless you all,
Georgie

The Triage Officer will make initial contact to discover more about the person’s situation, work out an appropriate response, and refer the need for follow up to an appropriate person or team leader, e.g.
• Phone call or visit from one of the Pastoral Care Team
• Counselling referral
• Food/groceries/vouchers/household items
• Handyman help
• Backyard clean up team
• Prayer Ministry Team
• Pastors – spiritual/theological issues; pastoral acts
The vision is that more people from GSPV will be able to use their gifts to share the love of Jesus in the lives of others. It’s joining in his mission.

Bread Collectors Needed
The Food Centre is in great need of help and support from new volunteers willing to be placed on a rota to collect bread from the local bakery at Tea Tree Plaza one Sunday evening per month. This task will require about one hour a month from you and will make a big difference in families in need - from small things big things grow. If you would like to know more about how you can make a difference, please contact Maurice Clark on 8269 3396 or just call into The Food Centre and ask for James or Tracy to show you around and familiarise yourself with all of the "wrap around" services provided there.
Further information can be found on our website at www.thefoodcentre.com.au and/or have a look at our community video using the following youtube link: https://youtu.be/RKZno5n9tMk

Australian Lutheran College Annual Appeal
ALC has launched its annual appeal in a video message from Principal James Winderlich: https://alc.edu.au/connect/annual-appeal/ Your financial support during these especially troubling times is vital for preparing people to serve in and through the Church. All donations over $2.00 are tax-deductible; those received by 30 June may be claimed in this financial year. Thank you for your support.
“Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble, and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.”
2 Peter 1:10-12 (NIV)
