Joy in the Lord... always?

In the book of Acts and in Paul’s letters, we come across the suffering he endured as an ambassador for Christ.  He was rejected by his fellow Jews, and run out of town a bunch of times.  He was dismissed as a madman, arrested several times, and spent years in prison.

Furthermore, listen to some of Paul’s own words:

• Five different times the Jewish leaders gave me thirty-nine lashes.  Three times I was beaten with rods.  Once I was stoned.  Three times I was shipwrecked . Once I spent a whole night and a day adrift at sea.

• I have travelled on many long journeys.  I have faced danger from rivers and from robbers.  I have faced danger from my own people, the Jews, as well as from the Gentiles.  I have faced danger in the cities, in the deserts, and on the seas.  And I have faced danger from men who claim to be believers but are not.

• I have worked hard and long, enduring many sleepless nights.  I have been hungry and thirsty and have often gone without food.  I have shivered in the cold, without enough clothing to keep me warm.     (2 Corinthians 11:24-27 NLT) 

In many of his letters, Paul is writing to people suffering on account of following Jesus.  Yet Paul writes to his friends at Philippi: ‘Always be full of joy in the Lord.  I say it again - rejoice!’ (Philippians 4:4 NLT)

Compare this to what he writes to the believers under the pump in Thessalonica: ‘Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 NIV)

What?!  How on earth is it possible to have joy when life can be so brutal?  Is Paul delusional… or in some form of denial?

Note that Paul does not say, ‘Rejoice in your problems always.’  That would be crazy.  Rather: ‘Always be full of joy in the Lord!’

Even in the midst of heartbreak, suffering, and grief, believers find joy in the Lord Jesus.  How on earth is this possible?  Because through Jesus we have come into God’s story of restoration and hope for his world – including us!

Family Hub
There has been amazing support for the Family Hub in 2019.  This has been through our monthly food collections and also through financial help.  Thank you for this support as it has enabled The Hub to continue to support needy families in the district.

We have one more opportunity to support their work during 2019.  This year The Hub had contact with 250 families and over 400 children.  They plan to bring joy to these families by holding a Christmas celebration and part of this is giving each child a small gift.  This is a big and costly undertaking and we would like to support this financially.

This Sunday there are opportunities to contribute:
• there will be a BBQ between the 10:30 service and Half Yearly meeting- sausages $2, steak sandwich $4.  Maximum per family $15.
• there will be a plant stall after both services.  This will be a one Sunday only sale.
• if you won't be around for the BBQ or are not into plants you can give a donation. This can be placed in the bowl in the display on the left hand side of the platform at both services.

After services on Sunday several people asked if they could donate presents rather than give financially.  For uniformity of gifts The Hub has requested that we do not provide presents.

Facilities Upgrades
A dedicated team of enthusiastic builders spent the last three Saturdays replacing the old wooden pergola at the manse.  After years of weather the existing wooden structure finally succumbed to the elements and before embarking on some leave, Pastor Rolly assisted by removing the rotting timber leaving a clean slate for the volunteer team, led by Mat Eckermann, to erect a new steel structure.  Thanks to the:

• volunteers who did the hard work of digging holes, mixing concrete and standing at awkward angles to support framework and clambered around on the structure to put it all together.
• wives who encouraged and allowed their skilled husbands to volunteer, and
• to the children who gave their dads the time to spend engaging with others.

The manse now has an inviting outdoor entertaining and social area that provides shelter from the weather.

A replacement rain water tank was also recently installed at the manse to replace the old one which had rusted out.  Thanks also to the team of volunteers who helped with this project.

Keeping Joy Alive

On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your happiness in this season of your life?  How about your joy?  They are not the same thing, are they?

Happiness is circumstantial.  When life is good and things are turning out well, we are happy.  When things go ‘pear shaped’ or ‘belly up’, we are “not happy Jan!”

Joy is the fruit of knowing God’s love for us in Jesus.  Nothing that you and I experience can change God’s heart towards us, or cancel out his promises to us in Jesus!

That’s why in Philippians Chapter 3, Paul urges:  Whatever happens, my dear brothers and sisters, rejoice in the Lord.  I never get tired of telling you these things, and I do it to safeguard your faith. (Philippians 3:1 NLT)

In the rest of the chapter, Paul warns his friends against a classic “joy buster”, and reminds them how to keep their joy fresh and alive.

Grace is the key to joy.  The two words go together and have the same root in Greek (grace = charis; joy = chara).  Our joy comes from the fact that God has made us right with himself through the work of Jesus Christ, which is given to us as a free gift (grace).

In this life we can experience hardships and grief, yet still have joy.  Following the funerals of both my parents, I felt both sorrow and profound joy: joy in knowing they were at home with Jesus.

Extra Opportunity to Support the Family Hub
The Family Hub plan to bring some joy to those who they assist during the year by holding a Christmas celebration.  They have contact with 250 families which includes 400 children.  The majority of these are expected to attend the Christmas celebration.

This is an enormous undertaking.  We have a chance to support this activity financially.  Between the 10:30am service and Half Yearly meeting there will be a BBQ.  Proceeds will go to supporting the Family Hub Christmas celebrations - sausages $2, steak sandwich $4 with a maximum of $15 per family.  If there is excess money donated it will go towards a gardening programme they want to establish.

If you won't be attending the BBQ or meeting there will be an opportunity to support this project.  At both services there will be a display on the left hand side of the platform.  Money donations can be left there in the bowl provided.

• develop and support a Parenting Course which aims to develop parents' skills which will help keep families together.

Finding Joy in Relationships

I give thanks to my God every time I remember you… (Philippians 1:3)

For a moment, close your eyes and think of the people in your life that bring you the most joy.  What memories first come to mind?  How long ago did these things occur?  What is important about remembering them?

According to The Brain Connection:

Fundamentally, memory represents a change in who we are… Memory represents a change in who we are because it is predictive of who we will become.

At the most basic level, remembering experiences with others represents who we were and the way that other people changed us.  In the spiritual sense, remembering reminds us that ultimately, we are not alone.

When Paul wrote the book of Philippians, he was imprisoned.  As we ponder what that might have looked and felt like, perhaps in the darkened space, Paul might have felt frightened and alone.  Oddly, though, his thoughts in Philippians are some of the most joyful of any writings in the scriptures.  Even in his alone-ness, Paul seems not to be lonely.  In fact, as he remembers the people who shaped him along the way, he feels their presence in the midst of his tribulation.

Indeed it is right for me to think this way about all of you, because I have you in my heart, and you are all partners with me in grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel.

Questions of the week:  How do we find joy while experiencing loneliness?  How do we connect with people when we are not near them?  How does God call us to retain our spiritual partnerships in increasingly busy lives?

We also would like to read out a list of names of those being remembered.  If you would like a loved one’s name to be read out, you can make this known as you arrive on the day.  If you wish you can also include the date of their death.

Following the service, there will be an afternoon cuppa in the hall.

Joy in Tough Times

We are blessed this weekend to have Pastor Stephen Abraham sharing God’s Word and message with us at the 10:30 service.  Please welcome him and Therese who teaches at Good Shepherd.

I suppose everyone one of us has times in our lives when we think, “Oh, great, now what?”

Often, these difficult times seem to come one after another, all connected by a thread of panic about when the next brick is going to be placed into the basket.  The Apostle Paul had a long string of those moments where he suffered imprisonment, shipwreck, bitten by a poisonous snake (!) – you name it, he suffered it.

Was there ever a time when Paul would have wondered if it was all worth it?  Is faith in Jesus worth enduring this kind of suffering?  It’s one thing to be ridiculed, punished, dismissed and beaten, but snakes?

It doesn’t seem like he ever wrote about throwing in the towel.  Somehow, in spite of everything that happened to him, Paul was able to express his joy in the middle of his suffering.  “…(I)n every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is proclaimed, and in this I rejoice; and I continue to rejoice because I know this will lead to my salvation through your prayers and help from the Spirit of Jesus Christ.”  (Philippians 1:18, 19)

This week and throughout November, we begin a series delving into the book of Philippians regarding the theme of ‘Joy’.  In the book of Philippians, this word, ‘joy,’ is used sixteen times.  How did Paul make it through with his joy intact?  How do we experience joy while living in difficulties of our own?

This week we’ll do these three things:

1. Look at suffering from a different perspective
2. Recognise God’s power and provision to give us strength
3. Understand the purpose for which we live and die

God’s peace to you as we read the book of Philippians together.  Please come prepared by reading Philippians 1:12-26 this week.  See you there.

Thank you, Good Shepherd
Worship last week was different.  It was uncomfortable and blessed.  Transformative and confronting.  I wanted to express my gratitude to you, as community members, for consistently looking ahead to the ways that God will continue to reform and reshape this part of the Body of Christ.  In future weeks, especially at the AGM, I want to explore ways in which you see God transforming the mission and ministry of Good Shepherd in reaching into the community with the gospel so that all may know Jesus and worship him.

If there were parts of the service that spoke to you which were delightful or concerning, please come chat with me.  It is there in those conversations that the bonds of Christ are strengthened and we honour each other in sharing our thoughts and ideas.

In the truest sense of the history of God’s Church, the people have always been drawn out of the wilderness.  A congregation is born.  Generally, a congregation is known for its common building.  What do you most appreciate about the building at Good Shepherd?






 As the congregation connects with a place, the only way that it can grow is by embracing both a common message and a common mission.  What is Good Shepherd’s mission?  In what ways is Good Shepherd living out its mission?






If Jesus visited, in person, Good Shepherd worship service this morning, what kinds of things would he want to talk about over coffee after the service?






What do the words ‘authentic Christian culture’ mean to you?  Is Good Shepherd an authentic Christian culture?’  If not, what would make it so?




In the first century, Jesus brought re-formation to the Temple in Jerusalem.
In the sixteenth century, Martin Luther brought re-formation to the cathedrals in Europe.
In the twenty-first century, can we bring re-formation to the Church in Australia?

Symbolically speaking, we’d like everyone to know that the sanctuary set up will be configured in a circle this weekend!  In re-forming the sanctuary space, we want to have some open dialogue through the use of scriptures where we are being re-formed in the future.  Come and be part of the dialogue and partner in God’s mission to reach into the community with the Gospel that all may know Jesus and worship him!

Food Collection for the Family Hub
This Sunday will be our last food collection for The Family Hub for 2019.  The next collection will be either February or March 2020.   The Hub sincerely thank all members of the congregation who have contributed so generously during 2019.

As this collection will cover 3 months, as well as the busy Christmas period, the Hub have indicated the following items are required to continue to support those in need :

2 minute noodles
Meals in a can
Tinned vegetables
Pancake mix
Cake mix
Cheese – in all forms
Dish detergent

As in 2019 there will be an opportunity to support the Hub's Christmas activities.  More details closer to the event

Christmas is Coming
After last year’s successful ‘Experience Christmas’ afternoon, we would love to offer this opportunity again.  Immerse yourselves in the wonder and excitement of the gift of Jesus coming to us through activities and stories that describe this awesome event.  Save the date: Sunday December 11.

Good Shepherd Remembrance Service 2019
We’re having another Remembrance Service on Saturday November 9th at 1:30pm.  It’s a time and place to remember loved ones who have died, to share our grief with one another, and to seek God’s comfort in Jesus.  It’s open to all who would like to come.  As part of the service, family members and friends will have an opportunity to light a candle.

We also would like to read out a list of names of those being remembered.  If you would like a loved one’s name to be read out, you can make this known as you arrive on the day.  If you wish you can also include the date of their death.

Following the service, there will be an afternoon cuppa in the hall.

High quality live Christmas trees are available again this year.  These are supplied by Holy Cross Lutheran Church Birdwood.  All proceeds go towards School Pastoral Care Workers in the Torrens Valley area.

Trees will be delivered on Saturday 14th December to a yet unspecified site in the NE suburbs (last 2 years to Golden Grove Lutheran Church).  Orders, with payment, need to be into John Dolling (83675296/jdolling@bigpond.net.au) by Sunday December 1st.

Cost of a tree is $45.  You can nominate height of tree required – 5.6 or 7 foot and they will match your request as close as possible.

Open Handed Giving

If there is a poor person among you, one of your family members or neighbours within any of your city gates in the land the LORD your God is giving you, do not be hard-hearted or tight-fisted toward them.  Instead, you are to open your hand and freely loan to them for whatever need there is…  (Deuteronomy 15:7,8)

I really enjoy the Old Testament.

There is something powerfully poignant, though, about God’s dedication to making sure the people of Israel recognise God’s will for their lives – fulfilment in living in the land with them.  He wants to make sure everyone has the opportunity for this full life.

In these verses, I hear echoes of this fulfilment and it sounds somewhat like this:

Reach into the community with the Gospel, so that all may know Jesus and worship him.

Isn’t that truly why we are part of Good Shepherd?  Because of the mission of God, through Christ, using our hands and feet to be open handed to the community in word, deed and action?

This week, we’re taking a peek at the joy of open-handed sharing.  Because God’s hands are open to us, always overflowing with whatever need there is, we can find a template for the sacrificial life that Paul implores the Romans to undertake.

Using the texts from Deuteronomy regarding tithing (often thought of as a ‘taboo’ word in our culture), we may find a surprising twist on God’s good humour in sharing life together.

For further study, read Deuteronomy 14:22-15:11.

What surprises you about God’s desire for tithing?  What is the benefit of open handed giving?  What do you feel when you read/hear the word ‘tithe?’  Can you think of one time when you have been open handed, sharing your gifts without thought of repayment, that brought you great joy?

Young people aged 10 and over, and their parents, are invited to take part in our Step Up program to prepare for Holy Communion.  Taking the approach that parents are the primary faith developers in their children, Step Up is designed to support parents in preparing their child for Holy Communion.

God's Gifts into Gear

Way back in the 1970’s, when the rivalry between Ford and Holden was even more passionate than today, fellas used to debate how fast cars could go.  100 miles an hour (or 160 km/hour) was the difference between a fast car and a slow car.

We used to joke about our four-cylinder “jam-jars” reaching 100 miles per hour… if we drove to the top of the Willunga Hill bypass, and then came down in “angel gear”.  “Angel gear” was putting the car in neutral and letting gravity do its work.  It was called “angel gear” because if your brakes failed near the bottom, you’d need angels to save you!

In most circumstances if you want to drive somewhere, but don’t put the car into gear, what happens?  It goes nowhere.  There might be a lot of noise revving the engine, but no movement!  It’s not able to do what it was made to do!

That’s what happens when we fail to recognise the gifts and abilities God has given us and engage them in service to others.  We might be receiving good feeding, but if our faith is not active in love we can become self-indulged, lethargic and unhealthy followers of Jesus - thus making no “Jesus type difference” into the lives of others.

This Sunday we’re digging into Romans 12:1-8.  Paul anchors us in the grace of God which brings us into a life of worship.  It’s about renewing our minds in God’s truth and putting our bodies, hearts and minds into acts of serving others.  It’s getting God’s gifts into gear.  It’s what God made us for!

This is to ensure notice boards and tables do not become over crowded, and that all items align with our community’s beliefs and values.

Staff Position

Air Conditioners
The evaporative coolers in the church have been opened for the summer months.  Overview instructions for use are situated on the wall next to the controllers.  For units in the rear foyer of the hall and Cafe PLEASE turn the units on and off only using the on/off button.  The units have been pre-set for the most economical use and effectiveness and adjusting the settings may render the unit ineffective.  If you experience any problem using the units please email the congregational manager, speak with office staff during office hours or leave a note in the communications book in the Cafe.

Friends of Lutheran Archives (FoLA) & AGM
The next meeting is on Monday 14th October.  Keen cyclist and family researcher Janis Haynes explored by bike the home villages of the 1838 Zebra passengers, and then investigated the homes her great-grandfather Faehrmann built for them after settling in Hahndorf.  Come along for the ride!  The presentation begins at 7.30 pm but please note that the AGM begins at 6.45pm.  Bethlehem House, Sudholz Place in the city.  Gold coin donation and supper.  All welcome.

Hope Fuelled Generosity

An old and wealthy miser was at death's door.  At the request of hospital staff, the local pastor dropped in to see him.  The old man was deeply touched and pleaded for the pastor to pray for his healing: "Reverend," he whispered hoarsely, tears filling his eyes at the thought of his selfish and miserly existence, "if I recover, if God spares me, I promise you $200,000 towards the Church Restoration Fund!"

The vicar gently squeezed the man's hand and promised to pray for him, though hardly expecting him to make it through the night.  Yet miraculously, the man recovered back to full health.  The pastor, together with the Parish Council waited eagerly for the man’s donation, but after 8 weeks nothing.

Eventually, the pastor could take it no longer, so he stormed around to the man’s house and asked: "What happened to the $200,000 you promised to the church?
The miser stared at him, utterly astonished.  "When did I promise that?"
"When you were sick."
"I promised the church the sum of $200,000?"
"Yes."
"Well, that just shows how sick I was!"

We laugh at characters like the stingy Mr Bean, perhaps because we see a bit of ourselves.  Truth is, our attitude to the things in our lives reflects what’s going on in our hearts.

Our heavenly Father is most interested in our hearts.  First, because he loves us and yearns for us do life with him.  Second, his restoration plans for his world can only happen through hearts surrendered to Jesus.

In our culture, advertising sows seeds of discontent, enticing us to buy, consume, and accumulate.  The Fear Of Missing Out drives our choices and habits.  We confuse our needs with wants, and our wants are never ending!  As if this life is ALL there is… and whoever has the most toys wins!

Have we lost sight of our identity, security and destiny in Jesus?

Jesus urges us to lift up our eyes to heaven and focus on what will last forever.  In Christ Jesus you're a loved child of the King, with an eternity to enjoy all the treasures of heaven!  With certain hope of that inheritance, we can experience contentment in life and practice the joy of being generous!
