I am the life

This Sunday we continue our series for Lent called ‘Knowing Jesus’. In this series we are looking at what Jesus says about himself in the Gospel of John, mainly through a series of statements where Jesus says “I am”.

This Sunday we look at what Jesus meant when he said “I am the life”. What was Jesus promising when he said in John 10:10, “I have come that you may have life and have it to the full?”

How would you define a full life? It’s an important question to ask ourselves because if our definition of a ‘full life’ is different to what Jesus promises we are setting ourselves up to be disappointed by God when he doesn’t give us what we expect.

We will also look at one of the common challenges that prevent many of us from experiencing the full life Jesus came to give us.

Come and join us this Sunday as we celebrate the life we have in Jesus!

I am the light

Few of us like to be ‘kept in the dark’ about things that really matter in life.  We like to be kept in the loop about important decisions in our family, workplace, or school.  We like to know what’s happening in the lives of people we care about, and how our relationships are tracking.  No one likes to be kept in the dark.

And no one should be kept in the dark about who God is, what God is like, and how God regards us as people created in his image.  In Jesus we receive God’s definitive answer to these questions.

As part of our Lent series: Knowing Jesus, this Sunday we will explore one of Jesus’ statements:  ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’ (John 8:12 NIV)

What does Jesus’ claim and promise mean for you?

  • It was decided to proceed with Stage 1 of our facilities redevelopment (kitchen, hall, children’s play area, hall upgrade and modifications to the Education Centre). This is subject to the congregation giving permission to borrow money from the LLL. If this timeline cannot be accommodated building will be postponed till 2017
  • It was decided than we would not apply for any government grants where the source of the money is from gambling revenue.
  • The logo for the 50th Anniversary was adopted. This will be used for all correspondence about the 50th.

Come and see

This Sunday we begin a new series for Lent called ‘Knowing Jesus’. Jesus once asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” After giving him all the answers they had heard along the way Jesus then asks, “Who do you say that I am?” How would you answer that question if you were asked?

In this series, we’re going to look at what Jesus says about himself in the Gospel of John, mainly through a series of statements Jesus makes about himself that are commonly referred to as the “I am” sayings of Jesus. This week we introduce the series with by looking at how Jesus’ first disciples came to know him by responding to the invitation “come and see”.

We pray you can join us this Sunday as we join together to “come and see” Jesus.

Transfiguration @ 8.45am service
How do you prepare for a journey or departure? The Gospel of Luke gives us a special glimpse of the purpose of the Transfiguration of Jesus — it is to prepare Jesus for his departure at Jerusalem (Luke 9:31). This sermon unpacks how Jesus’ preparation for departure applies to our lives as loved children of God.

Thankfulness @ 10.30am service
This Sunday at our 10.30 am service we celebrate the start of the school year with a fun worship service to welcome children starting school, and to bless all students, teachers and staff for the year ahead.

Our theme for the service is ‘Thankfulness: Looking for the good things’. Living with an attitude of gratitude is less about having the right things in our live and more how we look at the things we already have in our life. At the heart of this is growing awareness of God’s presence and his goodness towards us in Jesus.

The service will be followed by a free BBQ lunch. Come along and join us for us special celebration service followed by some food and socialising.

Coming alongside to care

At the 1976 Special Olympics in Seattle, nine contestants lined up the 100 yard dash. At the sound of the starting gun, they all started off, making their best effort to run toward the finish line. That is, except for the one young boy who stumbled soon after his start, tumbled to the ground and began to cry.

Two of the other racers, hearing the cries of the boy who fell, slowed down and looked back at him. Without hesitation, they turned around and ran toward the injured boy and helped him to his feet. All three of them then linked arms and together they walked to the finish line. By the time the trio reached the end, everyone in the stands was standing and cheering, some with tears rushing down their faces.(1)

Forgetting self to care for others - we see it clearly in Jesus.  Does he see that in us?  This Sunday we will explore three different aspects of Coming Alongside to Care

Habits

Currently we are in a sermon series called ‘Small things, Big difference’.  We’ve been looking at how many of our New Year’s resolutions fail, not because something big happens that prevents us from following through on our intentions, but rather because we didn’t pay attention to the small things that make a big difference.

This Sunday we look at the topic of habits. If you consider many of the New Year’s resolutions we make, they essentially deal with habits. We may resolve to stop doing unhelpful habits and start developing good habits that will work towards what we want to achieve.

The challenge is that habits by their very nature are hard to change. Habits are such a part of us, we just automatically do them. This can be a good thing, or it can be a bad thing. Good habits help us do things that bring blessing to our lives. Bad habits can lead to actions that bring mess into our lives.

Underneath our struggle to change our habits is a deeper battle between our old sinful nature and the new nature we are given in Jesus when we become a child of God. The apostle Paul writes about this struggle in Romans 7 where he says, ‘I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead I do what I hate.’ (Romans 7:15 NLT)

This Sunday we dig deeper into our inability to change our habits and look at how Jesus’ death and resurrection not only frees us for change, but his Spirit empowers us for it.

Given we all struggle to change our habits, this week’s message will be one not to miss.

Words

Currently we are in a sermon series called ‘Small things, Big difference'.  At New Year, we often make resolutions to change things in our lives and do them differently. Yet many of our resolutions fail, not because something big prevented us — but because we didn’t pay attention to the small things. In this series, we look at how God can help us to make small and incremental changes that over time bring significant transformation.

This Sunday we look at our words and the power they have to set and change the entire direction of our lives. While our tongue which we use to form our words is very small compared to the rest of our bodies, it has incredible power to influence our life and the lives of other for good or bad. For this reason it is very important to look at how we use our words.

In this week’s message we’ll not only look at the power of our words, but also why we say the things we do and how centring our hearts on Jesus significantly changes the words we say.

Given we can all use some help in using our words better, this week’s message will be one not to miss.

What are you thinking?

What kinds of thoughts do you have? Our thoughts are not confined to our head, but encompass our whole being. The Hebrew language of the Old Testament used a word for this, commonly translated “heart.” Yet Scripture laments that our heart — our thoughts — has become corrupt, divided, and selfish (e.g. Genesis 6:5–8; Psalm 14). Our mind has become a battleground!

Though our thoughts are divided and selfish, God’s thoughts are for us — He remembers us (Genesis 8:1; 9:16). This seemingly small thing makes a big difference! This sermon will unpack what it looks like when God directs our thoughts: our minds are transformed in joy and peace, as Christ guards our heart (Philippians 4:4–9).

The wonder and joy of Christmas

This Christmas at Good Shepherd we look again at the enduring story of God entering our world as one of us in the baby Jesus. Why would God go to such amazing lengths to save us? Why would God enter our messy world and take on our mess to free us? Why would God choose to do that through a baby? Was he crazy or incredibly courageous?

The ‘why’ behind the birth of Jesus can be summed in one word, love! The well-known Bible verse says, ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.’ (John 3:16) God did all of this because of his unwavering love for us. It is this message of God’s love to us in Jesus that we will be sharing this Christmas.

Our Christmas Eve services provide a great opportunity to invite family and friends to church as we share the message that God loves and accepts us no matter how big a mess we have made of things. In Jesus, God enters our messy world and enters our mess to free us from it.

On Christmas day we explore the question ‘Courageous or crazy?’ Was God courageous or crazy to enter our world as baby? Are we courageous or crazy to trust that our life together with God is inseparably connected to a tiny baby lying in a manger?

Our prayer is that as you journey with us through the Christmas services God will fill you with wonder and joy as you experience afresh all he gives us in Jesus.

Christmas Service Times
Christmas Eve - 5.00pm, 6.30pm and 8.30pm – ‘A necessary mess’
Christmas Day - 9.30am with Holy Communion – ‘Courageous or crazy?’
New Year’s Eve - 7.30pm

Blessing our visitors this Christmas
Our Christmas services attract many visitors and this gives us a great opportunity to reflect Jesus’ love in the following ways:
1.     Leaving car parking spaces free for visitors by parking on the school oval, or in Mattiske Funerals carpark.
2.     Making it easy for visitors to find a seat by filling the church from the front and the middle of the row.
3.     Wearing your name tag and greeting people around you as they take their seats.
4.     If you see someone by themselves who looks a little lost, introduce yourself and ask if you can help them.

These are all easy things to do and you never know how God might use our simple acts of service to draw these people closer to his Son Jesus this Christmas?

One whom Jesus loves!
Jesus called a bunch of disciples to follow and learn from him; and to be witnesses of his life, death and resurrection.  One of them was John – the younger brother of James.  While James was later executed by one of the Herods, John lived to a ripe old age.  John also endured hardships.  Yet for the rest of his life he kept telling people about Jesus.  One thing John knew of Jesus - and wants each of us to know for ourselves: “I am one whom Jesus loves!”

Bible Readings: John 21:20-25, 1 John 1:1-4

New Year’s Eve, Thursday Dec 31st 2015 – 7:30pm
Ready for Action
This year is rapidly drawing to a close, and a new year is nearly upon us!  But if you knew this year would be your last, would it change how you live each day?

Jesus says: “Be dressed ready for action, and keep your lamps burning, as though you were waiting for your master to return from the wedding feast” (Lk 12:35–36).  During this special New Year’s Eve service, we’ll explore how Christ’s very own servant nature encourages us to be both ready for action, and patiently anticipating our Lord, in the year ahead.

Bible Reading: Luke 12:35-40

Small Things, Big Difference – Part 1. Centre
At New Year, we often make resolutions to change things in our lives and do them differently. Yet many of our New Year’s resolutions fail - not because something big happened that prevented us - but rather because we didn’t pay attention to the small things.  In this 4 part series, we’re going to look at how God can help us to make small and incremental changes that will make a big difference in our life, in our relationships, and in our walk with God!  Starting off, the Magi show us what it means to have a right Centre.

Advent, a time to surrender

Currently we are in a sermon series called ‘Advent, a time to …’ Advent is the season in the church calendar where we prepare for the coming of Jesus. Jesus’ first coming changed the course of human history. His second coming will bring to completion what Jesus began when he entered this world as one of us.

This Sunday we look at Mary’s response to the angel’s announcement that she had been chosen to be the mother of Jesus. Mary’s willingness to surrender her life and her plans to be used by God to bring Jesus into this world was amazing. Her life would never be the same again.

While Mary had a very special and privileged role to play in Jesus’ coming that required her full surrender to God’s will, all of us are called to follow her example of surrender so that Jesus can come into our hearts and lives.

Surrendering ourselves to God is a daily challenge for all of us. It doesn’t come naturally and the very thought of it can make us shudder with fear. However, through the love God has shown us in Jesus, our fear of surrender can be replaced by the assurance of God’s acceptance and blessing as his children.

Cebu Mission Thanks
Many thanks to all who bought sausages and steak sandwiches at our S/sizzle end of Nov.  Thanks also to those who bought Christmas cards, our last Ringpull bag and few little knick knack things from the Gift table.  On that day we raised the wonderful amount of $600.
The Cebu Mission Fundraising Team has been raising money for the poverty people in Cebu, Philippines for almost 9yrs.  In that time we  have raised over $41,000!  So the members of the Team (past and present) wish to sincerely thank everyone for their support of our Pancake days, Scone days, S/sizzles and all our Major Fundraiser nights that were held throughout those 9yrs.

We would also like to sincerely thank all those people who were on our 'Helpers' list.  It was much appreciated that we could call you for help when needed, for cooking a BBQ, for 'manning' a stall or helping out at a Major Fundraiser night, etc.  Much appreciated.

Last Sunday, a lunch was held as a 'Thankyou' to all past and present Team members....sadly, a final farewell to an 'End of an Era' of Fundraising for Cebu.  Steve Buck attended as the International Gospel Centre chairman of the Board.  He thanked the Team members for all their hard work, commitment and compassion for the mission.  He also wanted to say a big thankyou to the Para Vista Congregation for supporting the Cebu Mission for 9yrs.  Thanks also to Pastor Noel and John Dolling for their help during those years too.
