Is it Better to Give or Receive?
We all like to receive presents. Most of us enjoy being served by someone else. It is great to receive as it makes us feel special and valued. Yet to receive someone has to give; someone has to give a gift or give of their time and effort. You cannot receive without someone else giving.

So is it better to give or to receive? The reality is that life will always involve both giving and receiving. So what should our focus be, giving or receiving? I think the answer to this question is found by asking what would happen if we just focussed on receiving or just giving?

If we were to all focus on receiving then who would do the giving? We would reach a grid lock where there would be nothing to receive because nothing was being given as everyone would be waiting to receive. However, if everyone focussed on giving then people would still be receiving even if they were giving themselves. Receiving would naturally flow out of a culture of giving.

It is no surprise then that God’s first move towards us always involves giving. He gives us our life; he gives us his love; and he gives us what we need for life here. His greatest gift was his Son Jesus who he sent into this world to give his life for us so that we could enjoy life together with a perfect God even though we live imperfect lives. God is a giving God and he wants us to receive all that he gives us through his Son Jesus.

God’s plan is that as we receive from him we will then pass it on by giving. We begin by giving our lives to God to live for his plans and purposes. Out of the love that God gives us we will love each other and give to each other. As God modelled a life of giving by sending his Son Jesus to die for us, he calls us to focus on giving instead of receiving. Jesus said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ (Acts 20:35) When we focus on giving we become a blessing to each other.

Is your life more focussed on receiving or giving? How can you further develop a giving focus for your life? How can you model this to your children and teach them that it is better to give than to receive? As we all focus on giving there will never be a lack of opportunities for us to receive.

This week we continue the series, “Hope that lasts forever (How Jesus’ resurrection rubs against everyday life)”. This week’s message: HOPE for Justice. God is perfectly HOLY: He cannot tolerate evil in any way, shape, or form. God cannot allow anything evil - including sin stained people - into heaven.  Yet, God has made it possible for ALL people to come into his heaven.  How?  Through Jesus. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross… (1 Peter 2:24 NIV).

Kingdom Kids at the 10:30am service for ages 0-12.
Kingdom Kids
Kingdom Kids is an intentional children’s program that aims to teach the bible through creative forms. It also nurtures faith and supports parents in their role of spiritual mentorship through extended teaching and opportunities to discover more about faith.

Our Kingdom Kids Ministry is growing and growing each term, in size and in desire to worship and honor our amazing God.

This growth has also brought about the need for a larger team of helpers and teachers, more space and new resources. The support of our church family is invaluable. Please continue to pray for this ministry and consider ways you too can be involved in nurturing our future generations for the kingdom.

Family visits
We would like to continue encouraging parents, grandparents and friends of those in Kingdom Kids to come and visit us at least once a term over in the school. It is really important that we share this experience with you so that together we can find the best ways to model and support the faith of our children. So grab your diary and lock aside a Sunday to come and pay us a visit. You are ALWAYS welcome.

Hot Curry Lunch in the Church Hall after the 10:30am service

Can you please assist the Sunday Hospitality Team by preparing and bringing that ‘hot’ meal to share?
If you have a favourite curry or other spicy dish that you enjoy preparing and sharing….it does not have to be flaming, smoke out of the ears ‘hot’ so that we do see tongues of fire and watery eyes, it can be a mild curry or
chilli dish - your contribution would really be appreciated.

If you can assist please let me know by writing ‘assist with curry’ on your welcome card, via email, bklaer@paravista.org.au  or by contacting the church office.
Your support will be significantly appreciated.

6th May 2012

Overcoming the cunning of Satan:

How did Jesus overcome Satan when tempted in the desert? Simply put as in the gospel accounts of Matthew, Mark and Luke, Jesus was able to combat Satan by knowing and quoting scripture. This article is the last of a trilogy of articles to highlight the need to read, meditate upon and memorise scripture. Again allow me to summarise the points on why we should memorise scripture, and then how to memorise scripture;

First, why memorise scripture?
• It’s the number one tool for resisting temptation.
• It helps you make wise decisions.
• It strengthens you when you’re under stress.
• It comforts you when you’re sad.
• It helps you witness to unbelievers.

And secondly, how do I memorise scripture?
• Pick a verse that speaks to you.
• Write it on a card and place the card in a prominent position.
• Say the address before and after the text.
• Read the verse aloud and read it many times.
• Memorize it exactly.
• Start by memorizing one verse a week.
• Learn scripture by explaining it to others.

Overcoming:

As I suggested in the first article, memorising scripture is the number one tool for resisting temptation. I recently read an article about the Tiger Rattlesnake. Because of its soft pinkish tint and tiger stripes across its body, it has been described by a maintenance director of an outdoor museum in Arizona USA as the most beautiful rattler created. This rattlesnake though doesn't rattle to warn you of the eminent danger. They strike first, and then rattle, as though to laugh at the stupidity of their prey. Isn't that much the same as Satan? Satan struck first in the Garden of Eden and has been "rattling his evil tail in delight" ever since, deceiving by either part-truths or straight out lies always tempting us to eat of life's forbidden fruits. The battle between good and evil that began eons ago in the Garden of Eden when Satan entered mankind's domain continues to rage today.

Never forget God's counsel and instructions in His Word. They are given to protect us from evil, deception, and ultimate destruction. His Word says;

"Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil [Satan]. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour." (1 Peter 5:8)

"Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light." (2 Corinthians 11:14)
“Therefore, submit to God. But resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” (James 4:7)

And here’s the good news!!

13 You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins. 14 He cancelled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross. 15 In this way, he disarmed (or he stripped off) the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross.” Colossians 2:13, 14, & 15.
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)

While Satan may appear to have won in the first book of the Bible, in the last book and in the end God triumphs. His Word says, "Then the devil, who had deceived them, was thrown into the fiery lake of burning sulphur, joining the beast and the false prophet. There they will be tormented day and night forever and ever." (Revelation 20:10)

Amen and amen! So, above there’s 6 scriptures to memorise! If you desire to give memorising scripture a go, come and speak to me as I am more than prepared to support you in this endeavour.

A ground-breaking Australian work that transforms the rich watercolours of Namatjira’s story into a theatrical event.  Albert’s astounding story is told through words, movement and live music, together with the added delight of three of Namatjira’s descendants (watercolour artists and the guardians of his story) who depict his country in chalk on the theatre walls. They sit and watch, draw, listen and recount the story of their grandfather every night – and it is with their permission that this story is told. 29th April 2012

LEST WE FORGET

Significant on our national calendar is ANZAC Day, celebrated last Wednesday, 25th April. It is said to probably to be Australia's most important national occasion. Marking the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War, ANZAC Day became established as a national day of commemoration for the 60,000 Australians who had died during the war.

Today ANZAC Day serves to commemorate the lives of Australians who died in World War II and since WW II the meaning of the day has been further expanded to include Australians killed in military operations such as the Boer War, the Malay confrontation, the Korean, (a.k.a. “The forgotten War”), the Vietnam conflict, and other “skirmishes” including the current Afghanistan conflict. In all records show that approximately 102,734 Australian military men and women have lost their lives in wars in which Australia has been involved.

The word ‘lest’ can mean, ‘in case – we forget, ‘for fear that’ – we forget, or ‘so as not to’ – forget. As Australians we live in a country with democracy and freedom unknown in many countries. We praise and thank God for each and every defence force person who has and is serving to preserve this democracy and freedom we enjoy today in what Pedro Fernandes de .Queirós declared in May 1606, over 400 years ago, was the great Southland of the Holy Spirit. (Australia del Espiritu Santo)

We have returned servicemen in our church family. If you know them or any returned service man or woman, thank them for the freedom we have to worship the triune God. Regularly pray for them – lest we forget!

Babies and children up to school age are wonderfully cared for and taught in their own age-specific classes.
This year the focus is on the book of Acts. Would you like to join us? Turn up on any Tuesday morning to join an introductory class, or contact Sonia Hulme on 7122 2903 for more information.

To register your interest in the team or to know more about the exciting things happening in the Nan province of Thailand, please contact Simon King on e-mail: project.thailand@lca.org.au or on 0403 999 979 for an Application Package.
