Love Comes to Life in the Ordinary Things

This Sunday at Good Shepherd
We’ll be singing one of Bel Thomson’s songs she taught us on Pentecost Sunday: A New Creation.  If you missed it, you can watch it on YouTube:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_9my24MTYU

Pastor Paul Fielke, chaplain at Immanuel Lutheran College, will be our guest preacher at both services.  His theme: Love Comes to Life in the Ordinary Things.  Paul provided this ‘appetiser’:

We often hear about Mission, Evangelism and Witnessing to our Faith.

So how can I do that? I don’t feel that effective, or gifted, in fact I’m just plain ordinary.
My faith is important to me, but I wish I could do a better job of showing that faith to other people. I wish I could make more of an impact for God.

Well ….. maybe you do.

At both services we will have the installation of Steve Paech as our Pastoral and Community Care – Team Leader, as well as the commissioning of our Good Shepherd Pastoral Care Team.

A formula for friendship

This Sunday at Good Shepherd
We're in part 6 of Balancing Life’s Demands.  We're using the image of a wagon wheel to talk about balance.  We need a right centre in life: Jesus.  Then we fit the key parts of our life - the spokes - into the Centre.  So far we've looked at the mental, physical, emotional and spiritual dimensions.

In the last part of this series, we’ll be looking at the social dimension of life: growing in relationships with others.  Our theme: A formula for friendship.  While friendship cannot be reduced to a mathematical formula, we can keep growing towards being better friends.

What would be your best advice about making or building friendships?
Jesus grew in favour with people. What was it about Jesus that people found intriguing?

What insights do you gain on friendship from these Proverbs?

A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
                                                                                  (Proverbs 17:17 NIV)
One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin,
but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
                                                                                     (Proverbs 18:24 NIV)
Do not make friends with a hot-tempered person,
do not associate with one easily angered,
or you may learn their ways and get yourself ensnared.
                                                                                  (Proverbs 22:24-25 NIV)
Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.
                                                                                                (Proverbs 27:6 NIV)

This Sunday at Good Shepherd
… is Pentecost Sunday.  We’re inviting you to wear red, orange or yellow - to reflect the Holy Spirit’s passion for us, presence with us, purifying work in us, and power to transform us.

The theme of our 8:45am service will be Pentecost: God’s Abundant Spirit.
Our student from Australian Lutheran College, Dan Mueller, will be sharing some insights on the outpouring of the Holy Spirit from Acts 2:1-21: Pentecost: God’s Abundant Spirit.

Either side of Dan’s message, we’ll be singing a couple of favourite Pentecost hymns.

Singer, songwriter and speaker, Bel Thomson will be making a cameo appearance in the first half of the service.  At the end of the service, she will teach us one of her songs: A New Creation. We’re hoping to add this song into our Good Shepherd repertoire.

Our 10:30am inspirational rally will have Bel and Phil Thomson as our special guests.  Bel Thomson is an Australian award-winning Christian singer, songwriter and speaker. Since early 2014, she and husband Phil have been on A New Creation tour, presenting in churches, conferences and schools along the Eastern seaboard. They have a number of engagements in SA, including a few here at Good Shepherd.  For more info, please see: http://www.belthomson.com/   Bel’s DVD and CD’s will be available for sale in the hall afterwards.

Fitness for the Soul

This Sunday at Good Shepherd
We're in part 5 of Balancing Life’s Demands.  We're using the image of a wagon wheel to talk about balance.  We need a right centre in life: Jesus.  Then we fit the key parts of our life - the spokes - into the Centre.  So far we've looked at the mental, physical and emotional dimensions.  This Sunday we look at the spiritual dimension: the soul.

The Bible tends to use the word ‘heart’ and ‘soul’ interchangeably.

Writer and presenter on Christian spirituality, Mindy Caliguire comments: “Our souls form the very foundation of who we are.”   “Everything about our lives, about our personhood, is in some way a function of the soul.  … Our soul, and thus our soul’s health, is the driving force behind everything that matters to us.”  Mindy Caliguire, Discovering Soul Care, (IVP: 2007), 15.

In his book, Renovation of the Heart,  Dallas Willard writes, “Fundamental aspects of life such as art, sleep, sex, ritual, family, parenting, community, health, and meaningful work are all in fact soul functions, and they fail and fall apart to the degree that soul diminishes.” (emphasis mine)

As with our bodies, healthy souls require nourishment, training and exercise.  This Sunday’s theme: Fitness for the Soul.

Bible Readings: Joshua 1:1-9; 1 Timothy 4:7-8 and 2 Timothy 3:14-17

Budget 2015
January thru April 2015
Total Offering - Budget $172,200    Actual $162,825. DEFICIT $9,375
January thru March 2015 – Total Income & Expenses
Total Income - Budget $130,299        Actual $124,082. SHORTFALL $6,217
Total Expenses - Budget $124,099    Actual $120,503. SHORTFALL $3,596
Project deficit for 2015 $10,381 against Budget deficit of $4,175

Notes:
•    Offerings in April were under budget by $3,585.
•    Plate offerings were just over $1,000 below budget.  Easter offerings this year were down by $600 compared to previous years.
•    REG appears to have stabilised at just under $21,000.
•    Wages are around $2,700 below budget due to two staff positions budgeted for but not filled. This is helping to keep the increased budget deficit lower than the offerings deficit.

Recovering from Emotional Burn Out

This Sunday at Good Shepherd
We're in part 4 of our series: Balancing Life’s Demands.  We're using the image of a wagon wheel to talk about balance.  We need a right centre in life: Jesus.  He is the Hub of life, the Centre of the Universe.  In him all things fit together.

Like spokes in the wheel, the key areas of our lives can fit together in Him. So far we've looked at the mind and the body. This Sunday we look at the emotional dimension – how we process and act on our feelings.  If our emotional gauge is in the red too long, we can end up burning out.  In the story of Elijah, we discover how God helps us in Recovering from Emotional Burn Out

Thought
Taken from an article in Together by Tom Schmidt – Young Adult Ministry Co-ordinator, Lutheran Youth of Queensland

“..the most effective children’s ministry is not the one that the church does, but the one that the family does in the home every day. …If your church disciples whole families (not just their young people), you produce families where young people grow up with an understanding that faith is central to life and that church plays an important role. …this will produce a church family which is used to caring for and honouring the needs of young people and their community.  By the time a young person becomes a young adult, there will exist a community that celebrates the gifts and needs of young people and strives to involve them in expressions of worship and the life of the community.”

Looking after our bodies

This Sunday at Good Shepherd
We're up to part 3 of Balancing Life’s Demands.  We're using the image of a wheel to talk about balance.  We need a right centre in life: Jesus.  Then we fit the key areas of our life - the spokes - into the Centre.  Last Sunday we looked at keeping our minds healthy and active.
This Sunday we pick up the physical dimension: Looking after our bodies.

God created us with a body.  One of the ancients reflects:

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place.
When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,
your eyes saw my unformed body.
All the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
           (Psalm 139:14-16 NIV)

Every Christmas, we recall that the Word became flesh. In Jesus, God got tangled up in our skin and lived with us.

Jesus lived, died, and rose again with a body, paying the price for us to become His: in body and mind, heart and soul.  Since our bodies are now temples of the Holy Spirit, we are to honour God with our bodies.

Last Sunday at Good Shepherd
Our theme was: What’s on your mind?  As God’s people, we take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ.  Like soldiers guarding an entrance, we take sentry duty over what comes into our minds.

We can fill our minds with poison, stuffing, brain food, or the Bible. One form of stuffing is TV.  According to the ABS report in 2012, Australian adults spent an average of 13 hours a week watching TV.  That’s 676 hours/year.  The opportunity cost is well summed up in:

The Channel 23 Psalm
The TV is my shepherd
  my spiritual growth shall want
It makes me sit down and do nothing for his name’s sake
because it presenteth so many good shows that I must see.

It restores my knowledge of the things of the world
and keeps me from studying God’s word.
It leads me in the path of failing to attend worship services
and doing nothing for the kingdom of God.

Yeah though I live to a hundred
I shall keep on viewing my TV as long as it will continue to work.
For it is my closest companion
  - its sounds and its pictures they comfort me.

It presenteth entertainment before me
and keepeth me from doing important things with my family.
It fills my head with ideas that are contrary to God’s word.

Surely no good thing will come of my life
because my TV causes me to backslide
and I shall be ashamed before him at his coming.

What’s on your mind?

This Sunday at Good Shepherd
Last Sunday, we started our new series: Balancing Life’s Demands.  We're using the image of a wheel to talk about balance.  We need a right centre in life: Jesus.  And then we need to work out how our priorities - the spokes - fit into the Centre.

This Sunday we're exploring the theme: ‘What’s on your mind?’

For better or for worse, whatever you most think about is what you will become. We need to take care what goes into our minds - for that determines our beliefs, values, character, and behaviour.

Paul writes: ‘Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.’  (Romans 12:2a NIV)   How is doing life with Jesus renewing your mind: changing how you think about God, yourself, others?

Explain
There will always be something for you and the children to discover what God is saying to you.  Here are some ideas to help you.  Ask the children the following:-
  • The Pastor is talking about ………  Can you draw me a picture of ……..
  • If the child in your care is old enough to read, “write down” questions for them to answer throughout the service about what Pastor is saying. Open ended questions are great!
  • Ask the children to keep a tally of the number of times an important word in the Bible is said throughout the sermon (e.g. redemption, hope, love).

Balancing Life’s Demands

This Sunday at Good Shepherd
It seems that life in our culture is becoming more demanding all the time. With our technology and mobility, we are constantly tempted to fit a bit more in.  Keep doing that, and we find ourselves overloaded and stressed.  At what point do we say: “Enough!”

This Sunday we're starting a new series: Balancing Life’s Demands.  Think of a wheel.  If a wheel is out of shape, it's out of balance… and it doesn't function properly.  Likewise, if our lives are out of balance, we end up with break-downs, bust-ups, and burnout. Come and find out how God can help you find balance in a busy world!

Huge thank you to everyone who contributed towards the Visual Arts display over Easter. This is always a HUGE job and a lot of unseen work goes on behind the scenes. Thank you to the children and families who made the flowers – they were a beautiful addition.

Finally – thank you to the amazing Visual Arts team who made this all happen; meetings, planning/designing, prep work, supporting the flower making, assembling the display Thursday night after church and again on Saturday morning. (Then comes the pack up)

This kind of event doesn’t happen without the very generous gift of your time and talents.
You are an amazing group of people and I feel very blessed to work with you all.

God Bless – Andrea Brooks

Believing is seeing

This Sunday at Good Shepherd
This Sunday at Good Shepherd we are looking at those times in our faith journey when we experience doubt. Faith requires us to believe in things that we cannot see and this does not always come easily to us. It’s normal to have doubts about who God is and how he is at work in our lives.

Our theme this week is: ‘Believing is seeing’ and we will be looking at the story of Thomas who doubted the disciples story that Jesus had risen from dead. Thomas’ doubts turned into faith and we can learn a lot from this story about dealing with our doubts.

Bible Readings: John 20:19-31

Easter Edition

This Sunday at Good Shepherd
This Sunday we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection.  In a sense, every Sunday celebrates this.  It can become so familiar to us that we end up unmoved by it: “Hmm! Jesus’ rising from the dead?  Yeh, I know. So what?”

Those first disciples who encountered the risen Jesus were never the same again! They were transformed: from fearful people in hiding, to publicly proclaiming the good news of Jesus’ death and resurrection to ALL!  They were so convinced that God had acted once and for all in Jesus, that they didn’t want anyone to miss out on the significance.

How can the resurrection of Jesus be more like that for us - from information to transformation?

Come and join with us on Sunday to find out!

This weekend at Good Shepherd
We have a great weekend of services planned to help you enter into the Easter story and celebrate the saving work of Jesus through his death and resurrection.

Maundy Thursday 7.30 pm with Holy Communion - Condemnation or restoration?
Good Friday 8.45am & 10.30am - Would you die for you?
Easter Sunday 8.45am and 10.30am with Holy Communion - Easter changes everything

Our Easter services attract a large number of visitors who we can bless in the following ways-
  • Make it easy for them to find a car park by either parking on the school oval or in Mattiske’s carpark.
  • Fill the church from the front rows so first time visitors do not have to walk all the way down the front to find a seat.
  • If you arrive early sit in the middle of rows so that people do not have to climb over you to get to a seat.
  • Bring a packet of hot cross buns on Good Friday to share at morning tea.
  • Smile and say hello to people, especially those by themselves.

We look forward to you joining us for this very special time in the life of our church.

Hot cross buns for Good Friday
As part of our Easter celebrations we will be serving hot cross buns for morning tea on Good Friday. If you are able to bring a plate of hot cross buns, cut, buttered and ready to serve, that would be greatly appreciated. Please put the buns in the kitchen before service so those people rostered for morning tea can serve them. Thankyou
