Birth, Wind and Fire

What’s the first thing you think of when I say the name ‘Elijah?’

For some, it might be a chariot of fire; for others, it could be a hobbit (the actor’s name of Frodo Baggins was Elijah Wood, in case the reference caused you to scratch your head); for many, it might be from our scripture lesson for the day.  After a roller coaster ride of events that would leave almost anyone gasping for breath, Elijah finds himself holed up in the same mountain where Moses encountered God – where God passed by. 

In God’s pass over the mountain, he brings an earthquake, a mighty wind and a fire – but the scriptures say that God was not in them.  God chose to show himself to Elijah in a completely different way:

In a still small voice.

In some ways, it’s a new birth for Elijah.  After his time in the cave, he has a new life when he exits and what happens afterwards has a profound effect on our Biblical story.

How many times do you reflect on your own roller coaster ride?  What kinds of things are mountain top experiences for you?  What kinds of things push you to hole up for a while, to sook and feel that life just isn’t fair?

Ignite the Future building update
From Sunday 18th June the hall and the front foyer entry to the hall will be out of bounds as the builders require access to the hall for painting. A container has been placed on site to relocate storage items in the short term.  Items may be stored at the rear of the church and in the pigeon hole corridor so we ask for your patience as this is only short term.   A working bee to move all the items will be occurring as this news gets released.  First fix electrical, plumbing and security has been mainly completed for the new store and education centre. Lining of the store walls is nearly completed and lining of all other walls and fitting of doors in the hall area have commenced.  The builders plan to commence structural steel works on Monday 19th June so keep an eye on the viewing panels for the external structure.

Kingdom Kids
Kingdom Kids will be available this Sunday at our 10.30am service.  All zones will be operating.  Our Kingdom Youth (Year 5-7s) will finish off the term with lunch at 12.

Activity folders are available for the younger children and Worship Journals available for the older children for use during the services.  Please help yourself to them in the narthex.

Growing Faith at Home

Playgroup will be held at 9.30am in the OSCH room over at the school.  Please bring pre cut fruit to share.  Join other Mums and Dads and Grandies for a coffee and chat with activities for the little ones.

Youth Ministry
SOUL Crew is on this Friday night and we are having our mid-year fun event.  This is going to be held at Latitude and will be an evening of bouncing, climbing and flying!!  Then in two weeks’ time we will be finishing our series on “Jesus – Who Is He?”

We are really excited to now be opening up SOUL Crew to those in school year 6. SOUL Crew is a great way for like-minded teens to come together and explore their faith in a safe non-judgemental environment, so feel free to invite all your friends. 

Christian Life Week is coming up in the July school holidays and these are week long camps, spending time with other Christian teens hanging out, playing games, studying the bible and having small group discussions.  This year the camp is held at Port Hughes and run over 2 weeks – split into school year levels -and the camps will be tailored to the specific age groups. 
10th-14th July – Year 7-9
17th-21st July – Year 10-12    Cost $220-00
Para Vista has a number of campers already registered and also quite a few SOUL Crew leaders will be leading on camp.  I urge you to go ahead and register and be set for an awesome time.  If finances are the only reason stopping any young person attending camp, please contact me and we can come to some sort of arrangement. Candle trimmer
A volunteer is required to learn the art of candle trimming for our alter setting each Sunday.  This position only requires approximately 15 minutes to trim candles and ensure they burn brightly on a Sunday.  Please contact the office or Stephen on 8250 1690 or churchenquiries@paravista.org.au to learn the burning art of candle trimming.

Dresden Missionary Clamor Schurmann did much more than minister to Aboriginal people in SA. He also spent 40 years as a pioneering parish pastor and district president in Victoria. Betty Huf is an historian specializing in the history of the Western District of Victoria, and has written books about the German & Wendish settlers of the Hamilton area. Come along to the Friends of Lutheran Archives meeting on Monday 26th June, 7.30 pm at Bethlehem House, Sudholz Place in the City. Supper & gold coin donation.

Professional Standards
The Professional Standards Department of the SA/NT District was established by the LCA to assist all those who engage with our church to care for one another.
There is now a Professional Standards Officer in every District of the LCA. 
Caring for one another requires a little effort from us. It's something we need to choose to do. It's love in action. 
It's what we are called to do as Christians.

The LCA and its districts have policies and procedures to help us know appropriate ways of behaving and responding to matters that life throws at us.  We need to take special care of the vulnerable people, the frail, the sick, the sad and especially our children. In the past we may have tried to ‘fix things up’ after an incident occurred, but our new focus is on the prevention of harm.

The LCA offers a number of different types of training and workshops to help congregations meet their Health and Safety, and ChildSafe obligations.

As part of this Good Shepherd will host two opportunities to participate in the Professional Standards Workshop (PSW) on Sunday 6th August and again on Sunday 10th September commencing at 12.30pm and finishing at 6.30pm.  You only need to attend one.

This workshop focuses on the prevention of harassment and abuse (including Safe Place) and ChildSafe team member combined into one workshop, removing the need for congregation members to complete two types of training.
This is the foundation training which must be completed before other levels of training offered by the LCA.

The workshop numbers are capped at 35 people. This is due to the interactive nature of the sessions so early registration is recommended. Registration is via online system and is accessible here: https://goo.gl/Zanktk and also via the SA/NT District website. If you do not have computer access please contact the church office and they will assist in registration.

Cost for each participant is $40.00.  If this is prohibitive for you please contact the church office or Stephen on 8263 5087 and some concession can be arranged.

This workshop is required by all church leaders and recommended for all adult members. A luncheon will be provided for participants directly after service on Sunday to enable the workshop to commence and finish on time.  Please see the notice board and slide adverts for further information.

Life in the Spirit

Last Sunday we celebrated Pentecost.  As promised, Jesus sent the gift of the Holy Spirit.  Filled with the Spirit, the disciples received power to witness what Jesus had done for all people through his death and resurrection.  

In the Bible there are a bunch of adjectives and metaphors describing the Holy Spirit.  Each one tells us something about who the Holy Spirit is, and what the Holy Spirit does.

Following on from Pentecost, this Sunday we commence with a three part series: Life in the Spirit. 
This Sunday we explore: The Spirit of Truth – our Advocate
If you look into the Bible readings below, you may find your translation has a different word for Advocate – perhaps Counsellor, Comforter, Helper, or Friend.

Sometimes we expect a friend to always agree with us – even when we are wrong.  Jesus tells us that this Advocate is the Spirit of Truth.  The Holy Spirit is our close and personal Friend who always has our best interests at heart. As our divine Friend, the Holy Spirit always gives us the truth - because God cannot lie!

Youth Ministry
SOUL Crew was held last Friday night.  We looked at Jesus the Teacher – Part II.  We learned about prayer and the relevance and importance of prayer in today’s society.  We looked at 2 bible translations of the Lord’s Prayer and what it was actually saying to us.  We also discussed how Jesus would teach people to pray in our world today – would it be any different?  Great discussions all round.  We had fun tying ourselves in knots and realising that prayer can help us get out of these “knotty” situations.  At the end of the evening we spent some time in prayer -  not just ordinary prayer, but praying for other people’s needs, rather than our own.  It was awesome!!  Next week we will be holding a mid-year fun event at Latitude.

Facilities Redevelopment
•    Proposed date for completion and hand over of Education Centre/library is Friday July 7th.
•    The majority of the hall will also be available as of this date.
•    Erection of steel work is now programmed to start in the week commencing Monday June 26th
•    Completion date of entire project is mid-August

Pentecost – Open to Power

I remember the first time I heard the song, “I Come from the Land Down Under,” by Men at Work.  Released in 1980, it realistically only hit the American charts in 1983, when I was an impressionable ten year old.  At that time, never would I have guessed I would eventually end up living Down Under, and never would I have guessed that I could actually understand what the song was about.

It seemed like it was a foreign language. Here is some vocabulary from the song which was quite confusing to me in 1983:
What is a ‘Fried out kombi?’ 
Head full of Zombie?
Why are the women glowing?  What are the men plundering?
And anyway, what does the word ‘chunder’ mean?

Of course now that I have lived here and been involved in the culture for over two decades, some of these questions have been answered, but the middle of the song is, in some ways, a reflection of Pentecost.  (Gulp.  Walk with me…)

Buying bread from a man in Brussels.  He was six foot four and full of muscles.  I said, “Do you speak-a my language?”  He just smile and gave me a Vegemite sandwich.

Granted, I don’t understand the fascination with Vegemite – it’s well documented in my past, but the man from Brussels understands the gist of Pentecost.  The Belgian is able to communicate with someone from a remote place on a completely different level by A.) smiling at the stranger and B.) offering him a connection with which he can understand.

On that first Pentecost, the disciples were baptised with the Holy Spirit and called to make a connection with words and actions.  As the sound of the Living Wind swirled around them, they spoke the words God gave them, but the Holy Spirit opened the ears of all those who heard – like the reverse of the Tower of Babel.  Instead of confused language, they were able to hear this new - old – message.

This week we’re going to take a look at the new words of Pentecost and the power that stems from finding connection with those with whom we are speaking.  What message do we share?  How do we share it?

Ignite the Future building update
All car parks running parallel to Montague road will be out of bounds for Saturday 3 June 2017 due to the school concrete pour.  Traffic will still be able to enter from Montague road and park in the eastern carparks.
 
As reported at the AGM the project is now running behind schedule.  The builder plans to try to finish the education/library centre as soon as possible and hand this back for use prior to the kitchen/café completion so we can have access to the full hall area.

Kingdom Kids
This Sunday we celebrate Pentecost.  At our 10.30am service our Kingdom Youth (Year 5-7s) will be focussing on Pentecost during their session finishing around 12pm with lunch provided afterwards.  All other zones will be operating.  The children will be leave worship immediately after the drama for their sessions.

Soul Crew Young Adults
The band is polished and Pastor Rolly is prepared! We are all excited about what God has planned for this Saturday night. Come along for a night of worship, discussion, small group time, fellowship and great music.  Pastor Rolly will be answering some questions relevant to young adults 18 and over, and throwing it out there for contemplation and discussion. How do I cope with university exam pressure? My journey with Jesus as I’m getting older and possibly leave the Christian home I may be living in – what does that look like? How does my relationship change with my parents and do I need to “obey” them anymore?

Where is my future headed/what does my future look like? Pastor Rolly may not have the specific answer you are looking for but come along and join in discussing these issues with other young Christians in the same or similar life stage as yourself.  A great band of young adults is preparing great music for the night too. Feel free to invite all your friends as it will be a great opportunity to reconnect or form some new friendships. Receiving to Give

We learn many things from our parents in our developmental years.  In order to grow into full adulthood, we are taught how to work, how to rest, how to play and, in essence, how to live in community with people who are like us and who are not like us.  From the very beginning, three ideas are delivered daily:

Receive, Share and Give.
As adults, we often forget these important lessons and we become hesitant to do any of the three.  Why is this?  Because if we receive a gift, often we believe that deep down we are somehow inadequate and we must rely on someone else.  Inadequacy is a great fear of most adult humans.  When this happens, often we will lead with the words, “Oh, you shouldn’t have…”  With one hand we try to downplay the gift and with the other, we reach out to accept the gift.

We do this with God quite regularly.  Since the consumption of the Forbidden Fruit, humans have wanted to be God and so we believe that if we just try hard enough, or are good enough, we can do without any of God’s gifts because we can manage on our own quite well, thank you.  At the same time, God’s great gifts are beyond measure so we begrudgingly accept them, at times, loving God and hating that we can’t manage on our own.

Every person has heard the words from their parents or adults in their lives, “Now, you just have to share…”  These are bitter words for children because hoarding is a natural reaction in a limited world.  All of the gifts we have received from God are not for hording but sharing – especially those that work the congregation:   We have different gifts according to the grace given to each of us.  If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy according to your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach, if it is to encourage, then encourage; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully!

Romans 12:6-8

Every Sunday, we speak briefly about giving of our time, our gifts and our resources (given first to us from God), but if you are anything like me, I give last fruits, not first fruits.  From my resources of time, after a long week of work, I can ‘spare’ an hour or two to help my neighbour.  From my talents, I can share a little bit (if I have to) to help my neighbour.  From my resources, I carefully check my budget first before I help clothe the naked, feed the hungry, visit the imprisoned – you know the list.  This is the terrestrial human condition of making sure I have enough before I give.  But ironically, our greatest joys come from the times when we actually do give of our time, our gifts and our resources, and we find new zest in life when we use them for their intended purposes.

This week, we find a young man, Timothy, a seeming favourite of the Apostle Paul, who is in the midst of discovering how to receive, how to share and how to give.  Even as a young man, he has been ordained with the task of remaining in a city of idolatry – Ephesus – to be ‘An example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.’  How is that for a difficult task?

Walk with me through the letters to Timothy to experience to ability to receive, share and give the Spirit of Power.

Youth Ministry
SOUL Crew was on last Friday night.  We looked at one of the important parts from Jesus’ “Sermon on The Mount” where he talked about the Wise and Foolish Builders.  The youth then got to construct their houses from biscuits and icing and a lot of lollies!! Even though we had some youth - and some leaders too I might add – on a sugar high, we still had some excellent results and everyone realised a solid foundation makes the best house. 

We then had small group time looking at the verse and putting it into perspective of our lives today, and how the teachings of Jesus way back in biblical times are still very relevant to our lives today. Jesus is and always will be our ROCK!

We are really excited to now be opening up SOUL Crew to those in school year 6, so look forward to welcoming some new young people.  Refer flyer for SOUL Crew dates and mark them in your diary.

The band has started rehearsing and Pastor Rolly is preparing his talk and discussion for the event. Preparations are well underway and we are all excited about what God has planned for this evening. Come along for a night of worship, discussion, small group time, fellowship and great music. 

Pastor Rolly will be answering some questions relevant to young adults 18 and over. How do I cope with university exam pressure? My journey with Jesus as I’m getting older and possibly leave the Christian home I may be living in – what does that look like? How does my relationship change with my parents and do I need to “obey” them anymore? Where is my future headed/what does my future look like? Pastor Rolly may not have the specific answer you are looking for but come along and join in discussing these issues with other young Christians in the same or similar life stage as yourself.  

A great band of young adults is preparing great music for the night too. Feel free to invite all your friends as it will be a great opportunity to reconnect or form some new friendships.

Echo

What’s an echo?  Where have you heard an echo?

Perhaps shouting into a deep well, or in a large building?  The sound of your voice bounces back to you – or out to others in different places. 

Like a pebble in a pond, the love and good news of Jesus has been echoing from one person to another down the generations – from his first disciples to us. 

This Sunday, we will consider our place in echoing the love and good news of Jesus to the next generations, particularly in our own homes and with our families.      

In our everyday relationships we echo Jesus to the next generations.  Who knows, your legacy may influence others for Jesus over thousands of years!

Stamps for Mission
“Stamps for Mission” is a fundraising project of LCA Mission International.
The sale of used postage stamps raises thousands of dollars to support God’s mission in the world. Each year for at least the last decade, $10,000 to $15,000 has been raised and the total over the life of the program now is just over $400,000

Projects supported vary year by year, but are selected to provide funds where needed. In 2017 projects supported are
•    Chak Mun, field coordinator in Cambodia
•    Mick Hauser, lecturer at Martin Luther Seminary, Lae, Papua New Guinea
•    Ministry support for the Orang Asli (indigenous people) of Malaysia
•    Scholarships for our international partner churches to send pastors and lay people to study at ALC or in seminaries overseas.
•    Lutheran theological literature for Indonesia
•    Pastor Amnuay and Lua evangelists, Nan Province Thailand

What philatelic items are saleable?
Any postal items are saleable, including used and unused stamps, overseas stamps, first day covers, predecimal stamps, and old collections in albums (or in cartons or shoe boxes!)

How can you help?
•    Retain postage stamps from your personal mail
•    Ask businesses to retain used stamps (on or off envelopes) and then collect them regularly
•    Place stamps in the Stamps for Mission boxes at church or pass them on to Peter Nitschke for further processing (often by others)
If you would like further information or would like to know how you can join with the hundreds already involved in this project please speak to Peter Nitschke at church or contact him on 8365 7717. It costs nothing to be involved in this project which supports a vital mission of the LCA.!!

ANZATS conference dinner
Australian Lutheran College is this year hosting the annual Australian and New Zealand Association of Theological Schools (ANZATS) conference from 9-12 July.

As part of the conference, a dinner will be held at the North Adelaide Golf Course on Monday 10 July at 6pm. The guest speaker for the evening will be Dr Dylan Coleman, Lecturer in Yaitya Purrana Indigenous Health at the University of Adelaide and author of the award winning book, Mazin Grace.

Testify

Doctor Luke, the third of our Gospel writers - jots down for his Greek friend, the Excellent Theophilus, ‘an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us; just as they were handed down to us by those whom from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word.’  (Luke 1:1b,2) These eyewitnesses were asked to give a testimony, to testify to the truth which they had seen so those that were not there could hear and believe.

In chapter nine, Luke speaks of the disciples being sent out and the ‘went from village to village preaching the gospel and healing people everywhere.’

This week, I pondered for hours what the gospel was that they were preaching.  In our contemporary day, we preach Christ crucified and raised again – that’s the gospel. In this story, Jesus had not yet died and certainly the time for resurrection had not occurred.
 
So what was the gospel they preached? 
How do we interpret our own story in light of that gospel? 
How do we testify to the truth of one we haven’t seen and yet believe?

Meet N Eat Ministry
Winter is almost upon us it would seem, with the colder nights followed by chilly mornings. Now having to reach into the wardrobe for a jumper or jacket seems unfair after enjoying the extra daylight and warm temperatures over recent months.

Our ministry turns its attention to those who find this time of the year challenging. Monday night is most import to many in our community as it not only gives them an opportunity to come together with people experiencing simular issues but also in a safe environment.

Our team of dedicated volunteers look to you, our congregation, to reach out to those in your street or neighbourhood who would benefit from joining us on a Monday night and become part of our family. We not only offer a two and at times three course meal, but great companionship and a few laughs along the way. Some of our team members offer support as well as advice where necessary. Slowly we are seeing a difference in the attitude of our guests as they feel more and more accepted.

Please contact me for further information if you feel that you would like to help on a Monday night in person or with a pot of soup.

Ignite the Future building update
The foundation and slab have been laid and while waiting for it to set the structural steel will be getting manufactured.  The electrical and mechanical contractor is also working on getting the wiring and mechanical items in place.  Check out the progress via the viewing holes in the rear double doors and the door at the end of the pigeon hole corridor at any time.

Progress since last Board meeting:
•    April offerings were well above Budget by over $4k.
•    REG again met budget during April. Plate offerings blessed by Easter about $2k more than prior years with another Sunday well above average.
•    Offerings have gone from $2,700 behind budget at end of March to $1,459 ahead of budget to end of April. Certainly a praise point.
•    Most Expenditure lines are below budget thanks to the efforts of the staff team.
•    The audited financial statement was received and will be presented to the congregation for the half yearly meeting in May.

•    We received $4,955 in April for the Ignite the Future building fund and with that already received in May there is currently just over $16,000 of pledged money to be received.

Sent

Growing up, my dad ran a mechanical workshop.  Sometimes he sent me to pick up parts from automotive suppliers.  Later when I went farming, the boss would send me to pull down a fence, shift an implement, or plough up a paddock.

The one who does the sending is usually the person in charge.  The one who is sent carries out the will of the one sending. 

Jesus once said: “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. (John 4:34 NIV) Jesus is the Son of God sent by the Father.

When the crucified and risen Jesus appeared to his disciples, he said to them: “As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” (John 20:21 NIV) 

Jesus sends his disciples to continue his ministry, sharing the good news of God’s forgiveness throughout the world.  

This Sunday we will explore how Jesus also sends us.

Ignite the Future building update
The builders have completed a considerable amount of the foundation work and have commenced internal structural work on the new education centre and store.  A viewing hole has been allowed in the door at the end of the pigeon hole corridor to view construction works at any time.

Alfred Zinnbauer, the Lutheran Church and the Good Neighbour Council
Friends of Lutheran Archives FoLA meeting on Monday 22nd May:  Speaker: Dr Kristy Kokegei: Monday 22 May at 7.30pm Bethlehem House, Sudholz Pl, Adelaide. Kristy Kokegei is digital historian for SA History Trust. Her talk shows how the efforts of Zinnbauer and the Lutheran Church towards settling South Australia’s postwar migrants did much to ensure a compassionate and humane approach in government migrant policies.

New ideas are difficult

If you think back over the last fifty years, imagine if nothing had ever changed.  Have you ever thought of what things we would be missing out on?  Mobile phones (even if you don’t like the idea of them, they can still be helpful), personal computers, microwave ovens.  Imagine if we were still twirling the curly cord around our fingers as we were paying twenty-five cents per minute to talk to someone across the street.  Now we can text them for free when they are sitting right next to us.

New ideas can bring out the worst in people, especially for those who have power over the last new idea.  No one wants to be replaced.  No one wants their ideas to be outdated.  For the priests, the captain of the guard and the Sadducees in Jerusalem, this new idea – that in Jesus, there was a resurrection from the dead – was so difficult.  Because they could control the population with rules, with temple taxes and with force, they wanted to squelch the rumour that Peter and John were healing in the name of a crucified carpenter.  They wanted to keep power.

But all power is revealed this week in our scripture lessons in Acts.  Salvation comes in one name only: Jesus Christ.

So, this week we will look at three new ideas of the church in infancy that transformed Jerusalem.  Read along in Acts 3 – 5 and discover the story of how the power of the Holy Spirit, in the name of Jesus Christ, can allow the lame to walk – perhaps even an immobile to move and jump and praise God!

Come hear a difficult new idea!

A new national congregational training model is now being rolled-out across Australia and New Zealand.  The core module upacks the Standards of Ethical Behaviour policy.  It is introduced by LCA/NZ Bishop, John Henderson through a new Lutheran Media video production.
