From death to life

The story of the death of Tabitha (also known as Dorcas) in Acts 9 shows the helplessness of humanity in the face of death. Following the death of Tabitha, the church in Joppa was overwhelmed with grief. Yet Peter unleashes the resurrection power of God into the situation — God transforms death to life.

This Sunday we reflect on where the resurrection power of God is working in the world today, and how it continues to bear witness to the risen Lord Jesus.

Lutheran Community Care
Thank you for your generosity with the retiring offering last Sunday. $1500 was raised and together with the money from the BBQ several weeks before we were able to forward $1750 to LCC at Ingle Farm. They were delighted with this support and assured me that this money will be put to good use.

Last Saturday 3 members from the Men’s Breakfast cooked a BBQ for the Dad’s playgroup at Ingle Farm. This freed the staff to spend time with the dads. If you are interested in getting involved in this activity, please contact Eric Hofmanis on 08 82637183.

From the office

Trusty Chair movers
Assistance is required to move some of the chairs in the complex so the carpets can be cleaned.  Half an hour of time is all that is required depending on volunteer numbers. Proposed times for requirement are Tuesday 26 April am hours to move the chairs out and then Thursday 28 April pm hours to move them back again. Use this as a chance to get to know someone else in the congregation and bring a friend to introduce them.

Please mark your connect card with ‘chairs’ and date, send an email to churchenquiries@paravista.org.au or call the office with your availability.

Total Offerings – Budget $128,350        Actual $125,365     UNDER $2,985

Encountering Jesus Changes Everything

This Sunday we continue our worship series: ‘God’s opening acts’. In the book of Acts, we’re tracing how God opens opportunities for the good news of Jesus to be proclaimed; and opens people’s hearts to receive Jesus as Messiah and Lord.

Has it ever surprised you how God gets through to people?  Do you ever wonder how some people - who once wanted NOTHING to do with Jesus - end up becoming his faithful followers?  Perhaps you see one in the mirror from time to time?

This Sunday, we’re looking at how Jesus appeared to Saul on his way to Damascus. We’ll be hearing Saul’s side of the story.  This dramatic event changed him from a persecutor of Jesus to a proclaimer of Jesus.

Who would have thought Saul?  Who would have thought you?

God’s opening acts

This Sunday we begin a new sermon series called ‘God’s opening acts’ to build on our Easter celebrations of Jesus’ death and resurrection. This series is based on selected readings from the book of Acts and traces how God acts to open doors of opportunity for the good news of Jesus to be proclaimed. The news of Jesus’ resurrection begins a ripple effect with the kingdom of God breaking into the old order and spreading throughout the world.

We begin our new series by looking at how Jesus’ resurrection transforms our fear to courage when it comes to sharing the good news of his death and resurrection. The incredible change we see in the courageous preaching of Peter and John in Acts 4 highlights the power of Jesus’ resurrection to change our fear into courage.

If fear is holding you back from sharing your faith be sure to join us this Sunday as we ask God to replace our fear with courage through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Easter Services

We have a great weekend of services planned to celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus. Our Maundy Thursday service will begin our Easter celebrations. Here we remember the events of that night and celebrate Holy Communion together as we focus on what Jesus meant when he said, “I am the bread of life.

On Good Friday we look at how Jesus was prepared to do ‘Whatever it takes’ to set us free from the grip of sin so we could know and love God the Father. The Good Friday service has been carefully planned so the songs, drama and message all point to God’s amazing love for us in Jesus and what he gave for us.

Our Easter Sunday services will be a celebration of Jesus’ resurrection and what that means for us in light of what he did for us on the cross. The significance of Jesus’ death and resurrection is life changing. We have been ‘Set free for a new life.’

If you can make it for one or, all three of the services we would love you to join this Easter weekend and don’t hesitate to bring a friend. Our Good Friday service is a particularly suitable to bring a friend along who is not familiar with church or the Christian message.

Easter Bible Readings:
Maundy Thursday: John 6:25-59
Good Friday: John 3:16-17; Romans 5:6-8
Easter Sunday: John 20:1-18

Easter Service Times
Maundy Thursday 7.30 pm with Holy Communion
Good Friday 8.45am & 10.30am
Easter Sunday 8.45am and 10.30am with Holy Communion

Our Easter services attract a large number of visitors who we can bless in the following ways-
1.    Make it easy for them to find a car park by parking in Mattiske’s carpark.
2.    Fill the church from the front rows so first time visitors do not have to walk all the way down the front to find a seat.
3.    If you arrive early sit in the middle of rows so people do not have to climb over you to get to a seat.
4.    Smile and say hello to people, especially those by themselves.

Hot cross buns for Good Friday
As part of our Easter celebrations we will be serving hot cross buns for morning tea on Good Friday. If you are able to bring a plate of hot cross buns, cut, buttered and ready to serve, that would be greatly appreciated. Please put the buns in the kitchen before service so the people rostered for morning tea can serve them. Thankyou

Pastor Noel’s news
Last Sunday Pastor Noel announced that he will be stepping down from the role of Senior Pastor at Good Shepherd by the end of this year. Pastor Noel shared that managing his ongoing health issue, Narcolepsy (a sleep disorder) and the demands of leading a large church have become increasing harder for him. This has led him to make the hard decision to step out of the role and allow someone with fresh vision and full health to lead Good Shepherd in the coming years.

Health permitting Pastor Noel will stay on in his role until the end of this year and then take a 12 month break from work in the hope this will bring improvement to his health. In the meantime the congregation will begin working through the call process to find a new Senior Pastor.

Kingdom Kids
This Sunday is Easter Sunday! There will be no Kingdom Kids so families can worship together and celebrate what God has done for us! There will be a special activity book for the kids during the Easter services so make sure you keep an eye out for these.

Palm Sunday

This Sunday we celebrate Palm Sunday as we remember the events of Jesus’ riding into Jerusalem with the crowds excitedly shouting “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest!” (Matthew 21:9) The crowd wrongly believed that Jesus was riding into Jerusalem to set up an earthly kingdom where he would free the people of Israel from the oppressive Roman rule and restore things back to the ‘good old days’ of King David.

Little did they know that a few days they would be the ones to cry out “Crucify him! Crucify him”. What had changed? Did Jesus’ plans to establish God’s kingdom go pear shape? Not at all! Jesus’ death on the cross was part of God’s plan for Jesus all along.

This week in our series “Knowing Jesus” we look at what Jesus meant when he said, “I am the good shepherd.” When Jesus declares that he is our good shepherd, he tells us a number of things about himself and his purpose. The greatest of these is that he willingly lays down his life for his followers.

Come and join us this Sunday as we celebrate Palm Sunday and what it means for us that Jesus rode into Jerusalem to willingly lay down his life for us as ‘The Good Shepherd.’

This is the topic of a round table conversation recently put out by Lutheran Media as one of a series of YouTube videos.  It would be a good discussion starter for a small group – or for a friend who is open to Jesus.

If you go to Youtube.com/luthmedia you will find a bunch of other topics from Round the Table and Face to Face.  Some of them feature past and present members of Good Shepherd!

Linking with Lutheran Community Care at Ingle Farm
At our November meeting the congregation agreed to link with LCC at Ingle Farm as its local outreach project.

During the Christmas break the freezer stopped working and the Centre lost all its spare food. Due to government cuts they have not been able to afford a replacement which limits the programmes they are able to offer. The Board decided to replace the freezer. This was delivered on Tuesday. They were so grateful. This was funded from our Outreach budget.

Members are becoming involved in some of the 26 programmes LCC offer. Last Saturday several members from the Men's Breakfast group (Men @ Para Vista) supplied and cooked breakfast for the Dad's playgroup. The playgroup gives dads a chance to spend time with their children and re-establish broken relationships. It also gives the dads a chance to talk with other men in a relaxed and informal way. If you would like to get involved with this great programme or want more information contact Eric Hofmanis.

On Sunday April 10th Kathleen Wilson from LCC at Ingle Farm will talk at both services about the work of LCC

Like Son - Like Father

This Sunday at Good Shepherd
We’re in a series called Knowing Jesus.  There’s a lot of confusion about Jesus in our culture.  Let’s say you were surveying people at Tea Tree Plaza.  What sort of responses might you get to the questions: “What do you know about Jesus?  Who is Jesus?”

A good man, a prophet, a martyr, a wise man, a great teacher…

God is as God reveals.  For us to know who Jesus is, we should listen to what he says about himself.  We should consider the accounts of those who knew and lived with Jesus, who witnessed his words and works – as recorded in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

Throughout his ministry, Jesus repeatedly claims to be the divine Son of God.

For example in John 14, Jesus asserts:
“Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.”
And: “I am in the Father and the Father is in me.”

Do Jesus’ words and actions support his claim?

CS Lewis makes the point that such a claim can only lead to one of three conclusions: Jesus is a lunatic. Jesus is a liar.  Or Jesus is Lord: God in the flesh.

So who do you say Jesus is?

Our theme this Sunday: Like Son – Like Father.

Bible Readings: John 1:14, 18; John 14:6-11

The real deal

How do you feel when someone calls you a “fake,” or “phony,” or “bogus”? These are hardly compliments!
Yet, when Jesus declares to his disciples “I am the real vine” (John 15:1), he is calling Israel fake and phony.

This Sunday we continue our current series “Knowing Jesus — the ‘I am’ sayings in John” as we unpack what it means for us that Jesus is the real deal, the genuine article — the Real Vine.

Come and join us as we connect with Jesus through singing, prayer, and hearing God’s Word.

I am the life

This Sunday we continue our series for Lent called ‘Knowing Jesus’. In this series we are looking at what Jesus says about himself in the Gospel of John, mainly through a series of statements where Jesus says “I am”.

This Sunday we look at what Jesus meant when he said “I am the life”. What was Jesus promising when he said in John 10:10, “I have come that you may have life and have it to the full?”

How would you define a full life? It’s an important question to ask ourselves because if our definition of a ‘full life’ is different to what Jesus promises we are setting ourselves up to be disappointed by God when he doesn’t give us what we expect.

We will also look at one of the common challenges that prevent many of us from experiencing the full life Jesus came to give us.

Come and join us this Sunday as we celebrate the life we have in Jesus!

I am the light

Few of us like to be ‘kept in the dark’ about things that really matter in life.  We like to be kept in the loop about important decisions in our family, workplace, or school.  We like to know what’s happening in the lives of people we care about, and how our relationships are tracking.  No one likes to be kept in the dark.

And no one should be kept in the dark about who God is, what God is like, and how God regards us as people created in his image.  In Jesus we receive God’s definitive answer to these questions.

As part of our Lent series: Knowing Jesus, this Sunday we will explore one of Jesus’ statements:  ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’ (John 8:12 NIV)

What does Jesus’ claim and promise mean for you?

Come and see

This Sunday we begin a new series for Lent called ‘Knowing Jesus’. Jesus once asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” After giving him all the answers they had heard along the way Jesus then asks, “Who do you say that I am?” How would you answer that question if you were asked?

In this series, we’re going to look at what Jesus says about himself in the Gospel of John, mainly through a series of statements Jesus makes about himself that are commonly referred to as the “I am” sayings of Jesus. This week we introduce the series with by looking at how Jesus’ first disciples came to know him by responding to the invitation “come and see”.

We pray you can join us this Sunday as we join together to “come and see” Jesus.

From the Office

Offerings 2015
Offering - Budget $517,000                    Actual $509,053. DEFICIT $7,947
The board would like to thank the congregation for the way in which you all responded to our concerns mid-way through the year.

At the end of May we were already $11,400 behind plan and with giving in June and then in the last few months of the year helped significantly reduce the offerings deficit to just under $8,000.
Offerings in 2015 were the highest amount since 2008 and the board gives thanks to God for the continual generosity of our church community.
