What Are You Worth?

Recently when watching the excellent movie The Kings Speech I was reminded that just a few years ago (2001) the personal possessions of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor were auctioned off to the general public. You may remember that the Duke of Windsor is the royal title for the former King Edward, who abdicated his throne in order to marry Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee.
Among the items to be auctioned was a piece of their wedding cake. The winning bid for this item was placed by Benjamin Vim. He paid $29,900 for the 50 year old piece of cake. It's amazing that a plain piece of cake (it wasn't even chocolate) could be worth so much. However, this is not that unusual. Ordinary things frequently become valuable when they are owned by a celebrity.
In 2000 at the famous American Kennedy family auction many mundane items yielded millions of dollars on the auction block. A small stool that Sotheby's (administrator of the Kennedy auction) estimated to be worth $150 actually sold for $33,500. JFK's golf clubs went for three quarters of a million dollars. His Cigar humidor (worth $800) went for $575,000. A simple tape measure sold for $48,000.
What made these items worth so much? One thing only: they belonged to someone famous. Even the most ordinary possession becomes valuable when it is owned by a celebrity.
You may be ordinary, but you, too, are valuable. Not because of who you are,but because of who you belong to.
In the book of Isaiah, God said...I have summoned you by name. You are mine. (Isaiah 43:1)
Paul also reminds us...You are not your own; you were bought a price. (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)
And what a price it was. God gave his son in exchange for you. Jesus died so you could live. When you calculate your own worth, remember what you are worth to God.
You are valuable, not because of who you are, but because of whose you are. God sees something in you that you may not always see in yourself. You are worth saving--even though you cost him a great deal. What's more, he considers you worth the price he paid.

Impact 2012 is the name given to this year’s vision sharing and resourcing time. Impact 2012 is like a “state of the nation” event for our community where we hear good news stories, celebrate, reflect, and look forward to new directions.
The Impact 2012 sessions will be offered during all three services on Sunday 23rd October. For those who can’t make it on this day one session will be offered between services on Sunday 30th October, 9.45 – 10.30 am.
I encourage everyone who calls Good Shepherd their spiritual home to come along to one of the Impact 2012 sessions. I am sure you will be surprised and excited by how much God has been at work in our congregation over the last year.
Pastor Noel

Our next session for ‘What’s next Lord?’ will be on Saturday 5th November, 9 am – 12 noon in the hall. In this session we will seek God for strategies to implement the key themes that emerged from the first two sessions. If you are passionate about participating in the mission God has given us, come along and help us discern our next steps as a church. Everyone is welcome and even if you did not participate in either of the first two sessions you can still come. Your contribution will be valued.
If you have any questions please speak to or email Pastor Noel at nkluge@paravista.org.au

Special Retiring Offering
On Sunday 30th October, we will be taking up a special retiring offering at the end of all three services. This offering will be split equally between the three overseas projects we are supporting – Maranatha Health, Cebu Missionary Foundation, and the Lutheran Mission in Cambodia. Please prayerfully consider what you can give to support these life changing projects. God has richly blessed us individually and as a congregation. This is an opportunity to share some of this blessing with others. If you are not going to be here on the 30th October you can contribute to this special offering in any of the services before this date by placing your offering in an envelope and marking it “Overseas Retiring Offering”.  Alternatively donations can be made by direct transfer to -

Continuing our acknowledgment for the work of many of the teams who contribute to the life and smooth running of our congregation:
We wish to acknowledge Graham Wegener and Jim Molloy of the Shepherding and Care Worship Recovery Team. These men do have the heart of God.
Jesus said, “What do you think? If someone has a hundred sheep and one of them wanders off, doesn’t he leave the ninety nine and go after one? And if he finds it, doesn’t he make far more over it than the 99 who stay put? Your Father in Heaven feels the same way. He doesn’t want to lose even one of these believers.”
Making contact with those who have not attended for a time is not a big-brother exercise; it is an act of loving concern for your physical and emotional as well as spiritual welfare.
We say thank you to and the Lord’s richest blessings to Graham (Wegs) and Jim for their faithful commitment and their concern and love for you in this service to the Lord.

Part of the hall decoration on our Cultural Celebration Sunday was the “Peace” flag displayed on the hall wall. The word “Peace” is printed in four different languages, English and German, but I, and others, cannot identify
the languages of the other two “Peace” words.  If you know the other two languages please let me know. I would like to say that there is a prize for identifying the language of the “Peace” words on the flag……but I can’t!

Growth or Grumble?

Every now and then all of us stop and ask ourselves, “What on earth am I here for? What purpose did God put me on this earth for?” One of the purposes God has put us here for, is to become more like his Son Jesus. As his children God wants us to be like his Son. He wants us to think like Jesus, feel like Jesus and act like Jesus. From the Bible we see that Jesus was loving, caring, patient, forgiving and considerate of others. I’m sure most of us recognise that we still have some growing to do in each of these character qualities.
So if one of God’s purposes is to grow these qualities in us, how does he do it? God grows them by allowing us to go through situations that teach us to use them. If God wants to grow your capacity to love others, he will place you in a situation where you have to love someone you find hard to like. It’s pretty easy to love people who are nice to us and have pleasant personalities. It’s much harder to love someone who rubs us up the wrong way and we dislike.
If God wants to grow patience in you, he will allow you to go through times where you have to wait. We do not learn patience when we are given everything instantly. We learn it as we wait. God will teach you how to be considerate of others by placing you in a situation where you need to think about the needs and feelings of others. Families provide great training grounds for this one. Working with others on a team is another opportunity.
When God places before us a situation that may teach us to love, or to be patient, or considerate, we have a  choice as to how we can respond. We can grumble and complain about it and fail to learn anything from it. Or we can see it as an opportunity to grow and develop. Often we fail to learn valuable character lessons from the challenges in life because we see the bad things that happen to us more as a curse than a course on how to become more like Jesus.
The next time life takes a turn for the worse, instead of grumbling and complaining, why not ask God to show you what he wants to teach you in this situation? It also helps to ask God to give you his Spirit so that you can learn the lesson well. You’ll be surprised at the difference this can make to your attitude and the way you respond. Grumble or grow, the choice is yours.
Pastor Noel Kluge

Continuing our acknowledgment for the work of many of the teams that contribute to the life and smooth running of our congregation:

We wish to acknowledge all those involved with managing the finances of our congregation.
The Finance team who prepare the congregational budget and monitor it throughout the year. They are also responsible for the Asset Replacement Account ensuring the money is utilised in the most beneficial way.
The faithful team of tellers who ensure the offerings are counted and recorded each week.
Peter Kraft (over 20 years’ service) and Ray Courtney who co-ordinate all offerings from Sunday as well as the money received in the office during the week, prepare it for banking and arrange the banking.
We thank all these people who all contribute to ensure our finances are effectively managed each week.

From the office
Pastor Noel will be on leave from 12th -16th October.

REG in September was $24224 which is the highest monthly total since December 2008. This is great news. REG makes managing our finances much easier as it ensures a regular income stream even when members are away and makes the job of the Tellers easier.
We thank the generosity of those who call Good Shepherd their church home whether they give through REG or via Sunday offerings. In September giving was $1685 above budget.

From the Board

One of the major responsibilities of the Board is to ensure that Good Shepherd is a safe place for all – staff, volunteers, those who call Good Shepherd their church home and visitors. This covers a wide spectrum of providing a safe physical environment and the protection and care of the individual.
The Board achieves this through ensuring policies and practices are in place and through the various teams who have responsibilities in these areas. At each Board meeting there is an OHS agenda item where issues about safety are discussed and reported on.
To support the Board in ensuring that Good Shepherd is a safe place for all we have made the following appointments.

OHS Co-ordinator who will always be the Administration Manager. The co-ordinator is to ensure all policies, procedures and practises are in place.

Health and Safety Officer who will always be the Team Leader of the Facilities Management Team. The HSO is to ensure that policies and procedures are implemented  and adhered to.
