What Jesus Says About Reconciliation

We all have occasional conflicts and "fallouts" – with family, colleagues and friends.  At times we give back a bit more than we get. Sometimes we get angry and let fly with name calling or put downs.  There are times we don’t follow through on our commitments, or keep our promises. And sometimes we’re just careless with our words and actions.

When you’ve hurt another person, or said something stupid - how do you normally deal with that?  Do you apologize and ask for forgiveness?  Or do you just ignore it and hope it goes away?  (And what does such “fruit” indicate about one’s character?)

When conflict is left to fester, we might avoid one another and play childish games - like at the dinner table: “Can you tell your sister to pass the salt?”  Instead of sharing our hearts and enjoying one another, we hide behind veils of shame or suspicion; or we seek relief in some form of distraction. Pride stops us from acknowledging our wrongdoing to God ...and admitting it to the other person.

What happens to the relationship?  It starts to die.  Unless we deal with past baggage and seek reconciliation we cannot go forward together as friends.  The evil one laughs with glee; but our heavenly Father grieves.

No wonder Jesus tells us not to bother worshipping God until we take steps towards reconciliation: “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift” (Matthew 5:23-24 NIV).

“If a brother or sister has something against you” – this implies that you or I have done that person wrong.

Jesus tells us, his followers, to “go be reconciled to them”.  It means confessing our wrong doing, and taking responsibility for what we have done.  It means admitting the hurt we have inflicted on the other person - without minimalizing what we’ve done or making excuses for our behaviour.  It means asking that person’s forgiveness - and where possible, offering to make things right again.

Are there some relationships where you need to deal with past baggage?  Perhaps you recently tore strips off a family member? Perhaps you have a parent or a child or a sibling that hasn’t spoken to you for years – or even decades?  Maybe there’s a person at your work place or your recreation space that avoids you because you’ve belittled or bullied them in some way.

Whenever we are aware that things are “not right” between us, we are to take steps towards reconciliation. It’s what Jesus did when he died for us at the cross.  He dealt with the baggage of sin, guilt, fear and shame that separated us from God, so we can be forgiven and reconciled with God.  Those who have received his amazing grace are to show that same Spirit of reconciliation to one another.

John writes: “We love because he first loved us.  Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister” (1 John 4:19-21 NIV).

Grow Ministries Faith at Home
Dear Church Family,
How are you going right now?
What kinds of things do you find yourself thinking about?

I like the title of Growing Faith at Home this week. ‘The risen Lord Jesus comes alongside us in our journeys of faith’. How appropriate!
The bible reading for Sunday (Luke 24:13-35) describes the account of two friends meeting and talking with Jesus on the road to Emmaus. They were wrestling with big feelings, trying to make sense of Jesus’ death and their sadness and dashed hopes and the confusing report that Jesus was now alive.  They didn’t initially recognise that it was in fact Jesus with whom they were speaking. Through the course of their time together, Jesus turned their sadness into joy!
The second section of caring conversation questions include: ‘Have you experienced Jesus alongside you when times have been difficult? How has he supported you?’  How about tailoring them to our present situation?

I would also add, ‘If you took a walk with Jesus, right now, what would you ask him?’ Talk it over with your family!

I have also included GFH’s Children’s Chat as a resource for you to do at home. These are included in the attachments with the email that accompanies this newsletter.

This week Pastor Rolly is going to be talking about ‘What Jesus says about reconciliation.’
Here is child friendly clip that shows how Joseph (from the Old Testament) forgave and reconciled with his brothers:
https://youtu.be/ndETu4bzwAY

I would also like to highlight again Good Shepherd Lutheran School’s playlist link containing Chapel songs from Term One.
2020 Chapel Songs link:

You might like to sing along with them! Check them out!

Please remember, if you feel like a talk, I am here. Either give me a call on 08 82647966 or email me: georgie.schuster@paravista.org.au and we can sort something out. Sharing life with brothers and sisters in Christ through challenging times can be a blessing. And we do have our faithful God walking with us through these days…

God bless you all with His love, peace and hope!
Georgie

What Jesus Says About Being Different

What’s the difference between followers of Jesus and those who don’t?  How might those we live, work, and play with tell the difference? What sort of fruit in our lives would count as evidence…?

“If you were arrested for being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to bring to bring about a conviction?”

I came across this quote years ago, and it still challenges me. After decades of following Jesus, I still have propensity to speak rubbish.  I am still in the centre of my world far too often. I find myself more fearful and troubled than I’d like to be.  If you could read my thoughts and watch me closely for a few days, you might wonder whether or not I am a follower of Jesus…

In 2005 Ronald Sider wrote a provocative book: The Scandal of the Evangelical Conscience: Why Are Christians Living Just Like the Rest of the World? (Baker). Sider argues that most evangelical Christians are living lives no different from their non-Christian neighbours: “By their daily activity, most ‘Christians’ regularly commit treason. With their mouths they claim that Jesus is Lord, but with their actions they demonstrate allegiance to money, sex, and self-fulfilment.”

Friends, this should not be!  The world needs to see the difference Jesus makes.
‘The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.’ (John 1:14 NIV)

If our surrounding culture is ever going to take Jesus seriously, they need to see and experience Jesus through you and me: in our love for the Father, in our relationships with others, in our beliefs and attitudes, and our words and actions.

I’m not talking about the hypocrisy of the Pharisees who smugly self-isolated from the world. Rather, the humility of Jesus coming alongside people, treating them with dignity and respect, and seeking to do them good.

Whenever there's a scandal in the church, we are quick to say: "Don’t look at the church, look at Jesus."  If the Apostle Paul were around today, he'd say: "When people look at the church, that's where they should see Jesus!"

As the body of Christ, we are the community of faith that makes Jesus visible in this world.  Jesus says: “You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world.” Salt and light both make a difference to whatever they come in contact with.

Paul reminds us - God's redeemed and holy people in Christ - to LIVE as children of light: “You used to be like people living in the dark, but now you are people of the light because you belong to the Lord.  So act like people of the light and make your light shine.” (Ephesians 5:8-14 CEV)

In other words: “Don’t hide it, bury it, fake it, or be ashamed of who you are in Christ; but reflect the light of Jesus in everything you do.” Jesus is the light of the world. If you trust and follow Jesus, then his light in you makes you one of his lighthouses to the world.

At Dawn on the First Day...

In early 1971, folk singer Roger Whittaker released a song: New World in the Morning.  The opening lines:

Everybody talks about a new world in the morning.
A new world in the morning so they say.
I, myself don't talk about a new world in the morning.
A new world in the morning, that's today.
And I can feel a new tomorrow comin' on.
And I don't know why I have to make a song.
Everybody talks about a new world in the morning.
New world in the morning takes so long.1

While unsure of Roger’s intended meaning, I find his words resonating with my hope as a follower of Jesus.  Every Sunday we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, which is God’s pledge and guarantee to make everything new and right and whole again.  As a result, we can live today – and every day – knowing that we are already part of the “new world” (or kingdom) that God has prepared for his people since the creation of the world (Mt 25:34).

Whenever we experience trials, disasters, wars, and pandemics, we wonder why this “new world in the morning takes so long”.  Recent events remind us that we’re not yet in heaven, but still share in the brokenness of creation.  Whenever disaster or death visits us personally, we wonder what on earth God is doing, and how long we will be stuck in the shadowlands of grief.

Holy Saturday is that in-between place.  Like those first disciples of Jesus, we grieve and lament the harsh realities of betrayal, death, and loss.  During this season, it’s important to acknowledge our hurt; to label it, and lament our loss.  Yet because of Jesus’ victory, we have hope of one day waking up to “a new world in the morning”.

I recently read: “Holy Saturday acknowledges those struggling between post-traumatic defeat and pre-resurrection hope.”2 We will unpack this some more on Sunday.

After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day...there were a bunch of surprises:
  • “He is not here; he has risen just as he said… go quickly and tell his disciples!”
  • Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said… “Go tell my brothers…”
  • “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Therefore go and make disciples of all nations….”
King Jesus has established the kingdom of God on earth and opened it to all people.  The delight of meeting the risen Jesus fills us with hope to be shared: “Go tell... Go make disciples…” As his followers, we get to share Jesus’ invitation with others, so they too can be part of his “new world in the morning”.

From the Board: Prayer of unity for our community
& Pondering Points
Introduction:
In times of physical isolation, it is our inner being that senses disconnection with the things we know, because we like to be in a place of comfort, change is uncomfortable, and we receive that thought and feeling as a negative emotion, which than in turn makes us feel sad, anxious, angry, even to the point that we start to look for someone, or something to blame. Because we do not deserve this “pain”

But what if something good can come out of this?

God the Father loves us so much, that He sent His only Son, King Jesus, to save us, that is all of us.

I met this 82 year old lady today for the first time; she lives by herself, and has no family. She has been in self-isolation for 3 weeks already, no-one checked on her, no-one called her to say, would you like some help, you probably heard stories like this already. It saddens me to know that many people like that live just around the corner from us. She just wanted to hear a word of encouragement.

So I asked God the question what my responsibility as His servant is to these people in my community in this time of crisis?

He gave me 3 Pondering points.  All 3 are connected.
  • Ephesians 4:2 - Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love.
  • Ephesians 4:23- Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes.
  • Romans 12:5 - So it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other.
My prayer and pondering points:
Ask God to reveal what he has for you today, be patient, be open minded, approach gently and always out of love. Ask for the opportunity to shine His light.
Ask the Holy Spirit to renew your mind to the things of God and put your neighbour first.
And finally, we are not islands, we are all connected, we belong to each other, this will bring a culture change that is meant for eternity.
May God the Father, who invites us to be His hands, His ears, and His eyes, give us opportunities to be just that.
May God bless you on your journey,
Cees

If Only You Had Known - Palm Sunday

As (Jesus) approached and saw (Jerusalem), he wept for it saying, “If you knew this day what would bring peace – but now it is hidden from your eyes.” (Luke 19:41)

This was supposed to be a joyful celebration day for Jesus and the disciples – for the entire city of Jerusalem. Since the fall of the kingdom of Israel, they had expectantly been awaiting the Messiah, the newly anointed king, who would bless them with at least a millennium of peace. Jerusalem, literally ‘city of peace,’ but ironically so, is perched on the edge of rebellion. Tensions are high. The Romans have forced, enforced and reinforced their might and power and there hasn’t been peace for centuries. The crowd of disciples lines the road offering their cloaks and their voices to proclaim a beatitude on Jesus.

Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord.

Unfortunately, the crowd of disciples along with the entire city of Jerusalem (not to mention the world) missed that it wasn’t just a king that was riding into Jerusalem that day, but the Lord. When he arrived, they missed it. They missed him, because he was not what they expected.

“You should have known,” Jesus speaks through his tears. What should have been a celebration has turned to mourning. The people cried out ‘Peace in heaven and glory in the highest heaven.’ And it rides right past them on a donkey.

This Palm Sunday we won’t be using any palm branches. We won’t really be talking about donkeys or spreading cloaks on the road. We won’t be talking about the crowd of disciples or the Pharisees.

We’ll be talking about a crying Saviour that tells his people, ‘If only you had known this day what would bring peace…’

From the Board: Prayer of unity for our community & Pondering Points
Introduction:
In times of physical isolation, it is our inner being that senses disconnection with the things we know, because we like to be in a place of comfort, change is uncomfortable, and we receive that thought and feeling as a negative emotion, which than in turn makes us feel sad, anxious, angry, even to the point that we start to look for someone, or something to blame. Because we do not deserve this “pain”

But what if something good can come out of this?

God the Father loves us so much, that He send His only Son, King Jesus, to save us, that is all of us.

I met this 82 year old lady today for the first time, she lives by herself, and has no family.

May God bless you on your journey,
Cees

Grow Ministries Faith at Home
Dear Church Family,
Hope this finds you all safe and well!

Many resources are becoming available ‘for a time such as this’. Here are just a few for you to consider.

Grow Ministries are tailoring some of their resources to the situation we are facing at this time. In the “In a time of crisis” Growing Faith Moments (see email attachment) these questions (among others) are raised:

As activities are cancelled or postponed which ones are you missing the most?
Share a favourite memory from other of those activities.

Don’t forget their free resource that is still available.
See the link! https://www.growministries.org.au/product/church-at-home/

Here is a link that goes to the free downloadable resource they have prepared in time for Holy Week. https://www.growministries.org.au/product/holy-week-at-home/

Please find a colouring sheet in the email attachments.

Blueprint, (in conjunction with the Intergen Team -Uniting Church SA) have developed an Easter Resource for building faith at home in families. You might like to consider this resource in the next week, Holy Week. I will let them describe the resource:

Easter Faith Family Trail at Home
"Explore the events of the Easter story through a variety of activity stations. Each station has a theme, Bible passage, questions to chat about, and simple activity and prayer ideas. Using locations and items from around the home, we invite your household to choose at least one activity in the lead up to or during Easter. This is a great opportunity to grow faith at home for people of all ages, particularly families with children under 12. Most of the ideas use multiple senses to engage with the Easter story. We hope this resource equips your family to play, talk and pray together so that you may grow in faith, especially as you celebrate what Jesus has done for us this Easter."

Food Collection for the Family Hub
What a fantastic response!
What a fantastic response last week to our food collection in support of the Family Hub. Even with the church closed many members went out of their way to drop their donations into the church. Being aware of our situation Kathlene was expecting minimum donations this month. She and the workers at the Hub were amazed at the amount of food that was delivered on Monday. They thank the members of the congregation for their generosity, and mentioned that - in light of the current situation - this food will be put to good use and will be a blessing to families in need in the local area.

Mission Support
At times of uncertainty we as the Body of Christ are called to be a bright light of shining hope to our community.  We can become like Joseph and share our barns of hope with those who are hurting.  This can be done in a number of ways:

  • Regular Electronic Giving (REG) - www.lll.org.au/REG REG is a way to regularly support the mission of our church.  Details of transactions are kept confidential. Please visit http://www.lll.org.au/giving_through_the_lll/regular_electronic_giving_reg  and use BSB 704942 and Account number 100354939. Alternatively deposits can be made to the following bank account details: BSB 704942; Account number 100354939.
  • Baskets of Hope -Grocery items can be dropped off at the church Tuesday through Friday 9.00am to 3.00pm. We have supported many families in need and we want this to continue. Any household consumables including cleaning items will be appreciated. Any items surplus will be passed on to LCC.
  • Acts of Hope - Assist your neighbour who may be isolated by offering to do some shopping for them and drop it home when you do or be creative in finding a way to be supportive.

Postal Communication
If you become aware of anyone who does not have the means for receiving the weekly news via electronic media please get them to advise the office on 08 8263 5087 or assist them to contact the office with their postal details. We will post out a Weekly News pack on Friday that will include: a Sunday service order, message outline, and any other information relevant for the week.

Current worldwide trends indicate that more people require and seek support regarding psychological and emotional well-being. “When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.” - Viktor Frankl

Negative thought patterns and feelings of anxiety, fear, doubt and isolation are commonly experienced.  We all are trying to navigate and adapt to a changing environment and therefore the need for support increases.
