Celebrating God’s story of hope

Celebrating God’s story in our story #2.

Last week we began a new series based on our five branding words called Celebrating God’s story in our story. This series is designed to tie in with our 50th Anniversary Celebration theme ‘Celebrating the past: Igniting the future’.

We want to celebrate God’s story to us of acceptance, love, hope, servicing and growing. At the same time we will look at how we can join God in telling his story to the world in the years ahead.

This Sunday we look at God’s story of hope to us in Jesus. We all need hope. Without hope we can feel overwhelmed by our circumstances. Without hope our lives can feel pointless.

However, with hope our outlook on life is far more positive. With hope we’re able to get through even the toughest things in life which means having hope is very important for us all.

This week we will look at the certain hope we have in Jesus and what this hope means for our lives and for the life of Good Shepherd.

Bible Readings: Ephesians 1:15-23; Hebrews 6:16-20; John 14:1-6

Please remember to let me know if you can join us in the opening song for our 50th Anniversary Service on Sunday 6th November.  There will be one practice required on Thursday 3rd November.

What a fantastic start we had to term 4.  The girls did some great craft based around the scripture of wisdom in Proverbs 4:9 “She will give you a garland to grace your head and present you with a glorious crown”.  We also had some great general discussion too.  The guys did “secret men’s business” but I heard a rumour it involved steak and sport!  Remember this term, due to the nature of our events we have a new starting time of 6.30pm. We will still be going through until 9.30pm.  Up next is our screening of “God’s Not Dead 2”.

Youth is a great way of being fed both spiritually and physically, with like-minded teens learning to own their own faith.

It’s never too late to start coming along and making some great friendships and connections with fellow young Christians. Check out our term planner for term 4.

Acceptance and Love – Welcome with Open Arms

Celebrating God’s story in our story #1.

With our 50th Anniversary Celebrations coming up, we’re embarking on a new worship series: Celebrating God’s story in our story.   Regardless of our personal accomplishments or experiences, we humans need to be part of a bigger story than just ourselves.

Through Jesus, God draws us into his unfolding story for his world: a story of making everything right again; a story where each of us can play a part – and by the grace of God, make an eternal difference in the lives of others.

A couple years ago, we discerned five words that reflect God’s story and our story at Good Shepherd: Acceptance, Love, Hope, Serving and Growing. This Sunday we look at the first two words: Acceptance and Love – bringing them together under the theme: Welcome with Open Arms.

A couple of questions to reflect on:
What was it about the way Jesus related to people that they were drawn to him?

If people received that same acceptance and love from us, how would our story at Good Shepherd look 50 years from now?

Bible Readings:  Romans 3:32-26 NLT, Romans 15:5-7 NLT.
Pr Rolly: ‘Sunday’s message will be on my favourite story that Jesus told.’

Good Shepherd Remembrance Service
Following on from last year, we’re planning another Remembrance Service for Saturday October 29th, 1:30pm.  The aims are to remember loved ones who have died, to share our grief with one another, and to seek God’s comfort in Jesus. It’s open to all who would like to come.  As part of that service, we would like to offer family members and friends an opportunity to light a candle.

We also would like to read out a list of names of those being remembered. If you would like a loved one’s name to be read out, you can make this known to us as you enter the church building on the day.  Some helpers will be recording names for the list, and if you wish you can include the date of their death.

Following the service, there will be an afternoon cuppa in the hall.

Pastor Reid's housing requirements
In the medium term Pastor Reid will most likely purchase his own home. In the meantime we will need to rent a house for the family. We would be looking at a 4 bedroom house in reasonable proximity to the church.

If you know of any houses that we could consider please contact please John Dolling  8367 5296 / 0409 819 864

‘It doesn’t matter what you believe.’

God never said that #4
Many hold that beliefs about God, humanity, values, ethics, life purpose, and what happens after death are merely a reflection of one’s upbringing, education and culture.

Since religion and world views vary from culture to culture, many in our Western culture claim: “There is no absolute truth; there’s no spiritual or moral truth that applies to everyone.  Truth is a matter of choice.  I will determine what’s true for me; you can determine what’s true for you.”

So given the options available people assert: “It doesn’t matter what you believe – as long as you’re sincere.”

Really??!!!!!  I’d say that Hitler, Stalin and Pol Pot were sincere in their belief to murder millions of fellow human beings.  Does that make their actions right?  Sincere people can be sincerely wrong!

Jesus repeatedly makes unambiguous claims to be GOD!  What evidence do we find in the New Testament historical documents to vindicate Jesus’ claims?

This Sunday we’re concluding our sermon series: ‘God never said that!’  Come along and find out why the claim that all religions lead to God cannot be true, and why Jesus is worth believing in.

It does matter what you believe!  The life you live, the values you hold, the legacy you leave, and where you spend eternity will depend on it!

Igniting the Future Appeal
The IGNITING THE FUTURE appeal has been launched as part of our 50th Anniversary celebrations. Hopefully you have received an appeal pack by now. If you have missed out and would like one sent out please contact our office at churchenquiries@paravista.org.au or phone 8263 5087 and they will gladly post one out to you.

Please prayerfully consider what you can give towards this appeal to help resource the exciting mission God has given Good Shepherd. Achieving our goal of raising $250 000 requires all of us to generously support this project. This is not something that can be achieved through the efforts of a few people. We are confident that God has provided us with the financial resources needed to achieve this goal.

Please note that while we’re asking everyone to indicate what they will give to this appeal by 6th November, your gift can be given after this date in one payment or via instalments over the next 12 months. For gifts made after 6th November, or by Direct Deposit, we ask that you complete the appeal response slip and return it in the envelope provided via the Sunday offering bowl, either before or on Sunday 6th November. You do not need to complete a response slip if your gift is cash or cheque and is given by 6th November using the appeal envelope.

It doesn’t matter what you do

God never said that #3
We’re in a sermon series called ‘God never said that!’ We love offering little nuggets of advice, support, or sympathy. They come in handy when we want people to feel better. But what if the guidance you’re giving or receiving just isn’t true? What if God never said that?

Believing things about God that he never said can keep us from having a deeper relationship with him and lead us to give up on God because he isn’t who we believe him to be. Yet the problem isn’t with God, but with what we believe about him.

This Sunday we look at the false belief that says, “It doesn’t matter what you do.” Most people can see the problem with this so we qualify it by saying “It doesn’t matter what you do as long as I don’t hurt anyone.”

What we do matters. It matters to God and it matters to us even if we can prove that it didn’t hurt anyone. This Sunday we will look at the amazing freedom Jesus won for us on the cross and how what we do helps maintain this freedom, or surrender it.
