The wonder and joy of Christmas

This Christmas at Good Shepherd we look again at the enduring story of God entering our world as one of us in the baby Jesus. Why would God go to such amazing lengths to save us? Why would God enter our messy world and take on our mess to free us? Why would God choose to do that through a baby? Was he crazy or incredibly courageous?

The ‘why’ behind the birth of Jesus can be summed in one word, love! The well-known Bible verse says, ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.’ (John 3:16) God did all of this because of his unwavering love for us. It is this message of God’s love to us in Jesus that we will be sharing this Christmas.

Our Christmas Eve services provide a great opportunity to invite family and friends to church as we share the message that God loves and accepts us no matter how big a mess we have made of things. In Jesus, God enters our messy world and enters our mess to free us from it.

On Christmas day we explore the question ‘Courageous or crazy?’ Was God courageous or crazy to enter our world as baby? Are we courageous or crazy to trust that our life together with God is inseparably connected to a tiny baby lying in a manger?

Our prayer is that as you journey with us through the Christmas services God will fill you with wonder and joy as you experience afresh all he gives us in Jesus.

Christmas Service Times
Christmas Eve - 5.00pm, 6.30pm and 8.30pm – ‘A necessary mess’
Christmas Day - 9.30am with Holy Communion – ‘Courageous or crazy?’
New Year’s Eve - 7.30pm

Blessing our visitors this Christmas
Our Christmas services attract many visitors and this gives us a great opportunity to reflect Jesus’ love in the following ways:
1.     Leaving car parking spaces free for visitors by parking on the school oval, or in Mattiske Funerals carpark.
2.     Making it easy for visitors to find a seat by filling the church from the front and the middle of the row.
3.     Wearing your name tag and greeting people around you as they take their seats.
4.     If you see someone by themselves who looks a little lost, introduce yourself and ask if you can help them.

These are all easy things to do and you never know how God might use our simple acts of service to draw these people closer to his Son Jesus this Christmas?

One whom Jesus loves!
Jesus called a bunch of disciples to follow and learn from him; and to be witnesses of his life, death and resurrection.  One of them was John – the younger brother of James.  While James was later executed by one of the Herods, John lived to a ripe old age.  John also endured hardships.  Yet for the rest of his life he kept telling people about Jesus.  One thing John knew of Jesus - and wants each of us to know for ourselves: “I am one whom Jesus loves!”

Bible Readings: John 21:20-25, 1 John 1:1-4

New Year’s Eve, Thursday Dec 31st 2015 – 7:30pm
Ready for Action
This year is rapidly drawing to a close, and a new year is nearly upon us!  But if you knew this year would be your last, would it change how you live each day?

Jesus says: “Be dressed ready for action, and keep your lamps burning, as though you were waiting for your master to return from the wedding feast” (Lk 12:35–36).  During this special New Year’s Eve service, we’ll explore how Christ’s very own servant nature encourages us to be both ready for action, and patiently anticipating our Lord, in the year ahead.

Bible Reading: Luke 12:35-40

Small Things, Big Difference – Part 1. Centre
At New Year, we often make resolutions to change things in our lives and do them differently. Yet many of our New Year’s resolutions fail - not because something big happened that prevented us - but rather because we didn’t pay attention to the small things.  In this 4 part series, we’re going to look at how God can help us to make small and incremental changes that will make a big difference in our life, in our relationships, and in our walk with God!  Starting off, the Magi show us what it means to have a right Centre.

Bible Reading: Matthew 2:1-12

Advent, a time to surrender

Currently we are in a sermon series called ‘Advent, a time to …’ Advent is the season in the church calendar where we prepare for the coming of Jesus. Jesus’ first coming changed the course of human history. His second coming will bring to completion what Jesus began when he entered this world as one of us.

This Sunday we look at Mary’s response to the angel’s announcement that she had been chosen to be the mother of Jesus. Mary’s willingness to surrender her life and her plans to be used by God to bring Jesus into this world was amazing. Her life would never be the same again.

While Mary had a very special and privileged role to play in Jesus’ coming that required her full surrender to God’s will, all of us are called to follow her example of surrender so that Jesus can come into our hearts and lives.

Surrendering ourselves to God is a daily challenge for all of us. It doesn’t come naturally and the very thought of it can make us shudder with fear. However, through the love God has shown us in Jesus, our fear of surrender can be replaced by the assurance of God’s acceptance and blessing as his children.

Cebu Mission Thanks
Many thanks to all who bought sausages and steak sandwiches at our S/sizzle end of Nov.  Thanks also to those who bought Christmas cards, our last Ringpull bag and few little knick knack things from the Gift table.  On that day we raised the wonderful amount of $600.
The Cebu Mission Fundraising Team has been raising money for the poverty people in Cebu, Philippines for almost 9yrs.  In that time we  have raised over $41,000!  So the members of the Team (past and present) wish to sincerely thank everyone for their support of our Pancake days, Scone days, S/sizzles and all our Major Fundraiser nights that were held throughout those 9yrs.

We would also like to sincerely thank all those people who were on our 'Helpers' list.  It was much appreciated that we could call you for help when needed, for cooking a BBQ, for 'manning' a stall or helping out at a Major Fundraiser night, etc.  Much appreciated.

Last Sunday, a lunch was held as a 'Thankyou' to all past and present Team members....sadly, a final farewell to an 'End of an Era' of Fundraising for Cebu.  Steve Buck attended as the International Gospel Centre chairman of the Board.  He thanked the Team members for all their hard work, commitment and compassion for the mission.  He also wanted to say a big thankyou to the Para Vista Congregation for supporting the Cebu Mission for 9yrs.  Thanks also to Pastor Noel and John Dolling for their help during those years too.

Advent, a time to give

The Advent reading for this Sunday invites us to reflect on how we prepare for the coming of Jesus — the promised Messiah.

The people in John's time were called out to the wilderness, where they received the full blast of John's fire-and-brimstone preaching: “You brood of vipers! You are not true children of Abraham! You're so smug, focused only on yourself and what you can get!”

Are we any different, as during Advent, we prepare for the coming of Jesus at Christmas? Advent seems to have become a time of buying, grabbing, spending, hoarding and splurging. We seem to have made this season into a time of getting for “me, me, and me” instead of a time of giving.

This Sunday, we'll unpack how John challenges us to repent - to do an about face and look towards our neighbour before ourselves. It is God's gift of Jesus in our heart that enables us to love our neighbour. And not just as a “nice deed at Christmas,” but every day in our day to day interaction with others!

Advent, a time to reconcile

How are your Advent activities shaping your preparations for the coming of Jesus?

As Christmas approaches, maybe you are dreading the family get together because you’re at loggerheads with a family member – or with someone else who might be there!

As the anxiety of that stews over in your mind, how is that impacting your worship, your preparations for Christmas, your relationship with God?

Jesus says: Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. (Matthew 5:9 NRSV) Jesus is our Prince of Peace – the one who reconciles us to God…and to one another. Will we let him do that in and through us?

This Sunday we will look at conflict, and what Jesus says about being peacemakers.  Our theme: Advent, a time to reconcile.  Taking steps towards peace may result in one of the most significant gifts God gives you this Christmas.

Kingdom Kids and Families Celebration Service
A big thank you and well done to our children and families, technical team, creative arts team, and musicians who prepared a creative feast for us at the 10.30am service last Sunday: Follow the Light.  The service was engaging and prompted healthy participation.

Our recent half-yearly meeting - November 22nd 2015
Our half yearly meetings and AGM’s of our school, village, and congregation are important for our life together. We need to be aware of how things are going in our Good Shepherd community, as well as the state of our finances and resources. We need to be involved in major decisions about future events and developments. It’s like running a household on a larger scale.

Thank you for all who attended our recent half-yearly meeting. Yes, it was a much longer than usual. This was largely due to some legal procedures for the transfer of our Good Shepherd Retirement Village over to Fullarton Lutheran Homes. There were a bunch of ‘next steps’ that needed our approval so they could happen. And the Good News is that many of them have!

Thank you for your patience! I apologise to those of you who found it long-winded and frustrating. I also apologise for unnecessary delays. In future we will endeavour to keep things moving along. Your positive participation is always appreciated here at Good Shepherd!

Kingdom Kids
What an amazing ‘Children and Families Christmas Celebration Service’ we had last Sunday! It was wonderful to have so many children and parents involved in worshipping our great and awesome God. Thank you to everyone who helped out in the preparations during the lead up and on the day. Kingdom Kids is now on holidays. We wish all families a blessed Christmas.

Baby Zone will be running for one more week!
Did you know that Baby Zone runs during the school term at our 10.30am services for 0-2 year olds?  In Baby Zone we talk about the same simple topic for one month
Our topic for the rest of the year is:
“Jesus was a Baby”
“Jesus was Born” (See Luke 2:4-7)
“His name is Jesus” (See Luke 1:31)

This month your child will:
•    hear words and songs about the birth of Jesus;
•    feel glad that Jesus was born;
•    play with toys and materials to learn about the birth of Jesus.
Christmas is such an exciting time for young children! We hope your family enjoys your Christmas traditions or possibly has fun creating new ones! If you haven't been to Baby Zone before we would like to encourage you and your toddler to come and find out about Jesus’ love! Activity folders will be available for the children and Personal Journals available for the older children for use during services.

Advent, a time to receive

Growing up, did your family do anything to mark or celebrate the season of Advent?

I remember our family sometimes attending Advent evenings where we’d have Bible readings, devotional reflections, singing, short items – and a fabulous supper… sometimes with cream puffs!

At home we sometimes hung an advent wreath on our front screen door. Some years we’d have an Advent Calendar on the shelf above the heater, with a little pop-out door to open each day leading up to Christmas.

Advent is a time of preparation for the coming of Jesus.  This Sunday at the 8:45am service we launch into Advent with the theme: Advent, a time to receive.

Advent is a season to clear away the clutter, to let go of those things that are bending us out of shape – so we can receive the better things God wants for us.  And God’s very BEST for us is Jesus.

The 10.30am service will be our Kingdom Kids Ministry celebration service.  Our children will be leading us through a creative Advent service with the theme: Follow the Light.

Sunday Readings (8.45am): Judges 2:10-19, Luke 21:27-36

Employment Opportunities at Good Shepherd
Worship Support Team Leader (14 hours per week)
An exciting opportunity exists to join Good Shepherd’s Pastoral Ministry Team to lead and develop team leaders of our worship support teams (eg: music and vocals, technical support, dramatic arts, visual arts, ushering etc) to facilitate life-transforming experiences and spiritual growth in worship. The role includes preparing a monthly musician’s roster for weekly services.

This position requires a leader who is comfortable to lead by empowering others to carry out the ministry. With music ministry being a significant part of this role, musical ability and experience in music teams would be an advantage but not essential. Competent administration skills are also needed to ensure the smooth running of Sunday services. The successful applicant will be supported by the entire staff team, but specifically the Senior Pastor who has accountability for all worship ministries within the congregation.

The position is offered as initial one year contract with a three month probationary period. Remuneration will be according to the Lay Workers Salary Scale Level 2 for accredited Lay Workers or as negotiated in the interview for applicants without accreditation.

Consideration would be given to combining this position with the Youth and Young Adults Team Leader role (20 hours per week) for suitably gifted applicants.

Gifted to worship

This Sunday at Good Shepherd
This week we conclude our series on spiritual gifts called ‘Your part in God’s plan’. Our theme is ‘Gifted to worship’ and we will be focusing on Romans 12:1 where the apostle Paul writes, ‘Therefore, I urge you brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.’

Using our spiritual gifts to play our part in God’s big restoration plan is an act of true and proper worship. This Sunday we will look at the motivation behind offering our lives as a living sacrifice to God. You will have an opportunity to respond to the message by offering up your spiritual gifts to God.

If you haven’t yet completed the spiritual gifts test I encourage you to do so in preparation for our service this Sunday. You can complete the test online at: http://www.spiritualgiftstest.com/test/adult

I hope you can join us this Sunday as we conclude our series on spiritual gifts and offer them up in service to God’s restoration plan for the world through Jesus.

Gifted to fit

This Sunday at Good Shepherd
We’re well into our worship series: Your part in God’s plan. God’s grand restoration plan is to bring all things under the authority of Jesus Christ, who will restore everything to God’s original purpose – including us!

God calls us to participate in his restoration plan. How? By giving us spiritual gifts to serve others.  It’s how Jesus’ work of restoration comes into other people’s lives.

Last Sunday Pr Noel gave brief descriptions of around 20 spiritual gifts mentioned in the Bible. Did any of those resonate with you?  Did you do the spiritual gifts inventory he recommended? (If not, see below)  Have you talked over the results of your inventory with other Christians who know you well?

If you are still unclear or uncertain of your spiritual gifts, then keep asking God to show you what your spiritual gifts are, and how he wants you to use them.  Keep exploring and talking with others.

Perhaps you know what your spiritual gifts are - or have hunch about them?  Maybe you’ve been wondering:  “What do I do next?”   Sunday’s message will be about finding your fit in God’s plan.

This week we continue our series on spiritual gifts called ‘Your part in God’s plan’. So far we have looked at the purpose of spiritual gifts and God’s plan to use them through us to bring Jesus’ restoring work to others and this world.

While the Bible clearly states that every follower of Jesus receives at least one spiritual gift, it is not always easy to identify the spiritual gifts we have received. To help us discover our spiritual gift and understand how it works, this Sunday we are going to look at the specific spiritual gifts listed in the New Testament.

In response to the message you will be encouraged to complete a spiritual gifts test to help you discover your specific gifts. The test will be available in printed form for you to take with you or you can complete it online at: http://www.spiritualgiftstest.com/test/adult A youth version is also available at: http://www.spiritualgiftstest.com/test/youth The advantage of completing the test online is that your answers are automatically collated for you into a helpful report that lists your top three spiritual gifts.

A description of the gifts listed in the test can be accessed at: http://www.spiritualgiftstest.com/spiritual-gifts

I hope you can join us this Sunday as the message will give you a greater understanding of what each spiritual gift is and how they function. The following Sunday we will look at how you can find the best fit for using your gifts to serve God.

Sunday Readings: 1 Corinthians 12:7-11; Romans 12:6-8

Baby Zone
Did you know that Baby Zone runs during the school term at our 10.30am services for 0-2 year olds?  In Baby Zone we talk about the same simple topic for one month.
Our topic for November is:  God Gives Me Food
Jesus Gave Food to His Friends  (See John 21:9-13)
God Gives Us Food (See Genesis 1:29)
This month your child will:
•    hear words and songs about God’s gift of food;
•    feel thankful for good food.
(The food at Baby Zone is only pretend but the fun is real!)
If you haven't been to Baby Zone before we would like to encourage you and your toddler to come and find out about Jesus’ love!
