Guiding Light

I was talking with one of my young people recently about the stresses of Year 10. She shared that at the beginning of the year the teachers sat them down and told them every piece of work- every test, assignment, essay and exam- that they would be doing over the course of the year. She said it was overwhelming and that it would have been nicer if the teachers told them about the work load step by step rather than all at once.

I started to think about all the times I have asked God to give me a detailed plan of my future.
I often find myself wondering where God wants me to be in 10 years and praying that He’ll tell me right now every step I need to take to get there. I’m guessing I’m not alone in my frustration when it doesn’t happen. But this conversation made me consider how overwhelmed I would be if God actually did what I asked Him to, if He told me everything that was going to happen in my life or even if He told me everything that was going to happen this year. I still wish God would give me a little more to work with.

Psalm 119:105 says that God’s word is a lamp unto our feet. Did you catch that? The Word of God is a lamp unto our feet. It doesn’t say it is a beacon into the future. It doesn’t even say it is a street lamp that will help you get to the next corner. It says a lamp unto our feet. This means that it will illuminate our next step or two but not much further. Following a light that only allows you to see the next step may not be the easiest way to get to your destination but it is possible to make the whole trip this way.

I was driving in the Adelaide Hills one night and it was unbelievably foggy. My headlights were barely lighting up more than a metre in front of my car. I hate this kind of driving, it scares me. I like to see further into the distance. I like to see any obstacles or bends in the road so that I can safely navigate them. But with teeth gritted and knuckles white on the steering wheel, I made it to my destination. I could only see a metre in front of me the entire time and, although I didn’t like it, I made the whole trip that way.

My journey with God is often like that. I find myself wishing I could see further into the future or see any obstacles that are coming my way. But I know that I can make the whole journey with only enough light to see the next step. This way I am depending on God for each step and not getting overwhelmed by the things that He has for me far in the distance. Let’s face it, if God gave me enough light to see even the next months’ worth of steps I would be very tempted to do it without Him or maybe to go a different way.

It can be pretty scary feeling like you are walking into the unknown. Thankfully we have a God who not only gives us a light unto our feet, but also offers to walk with us and guide us every step of the way.

For this God is our God forever and ever; He will be our guide even to the end. Psalm 48:14

My Exciting Future with God

Do you have times in your life when you think "If this is what my life is going to be like from now on then something's got to change?, there's got to be more to life than this!” Usually this happens when we take our focus away from God and instead focus on ourselves and the world's view of us. This tends to happen when we are adapting to a change in our life circumstances.

This happened to me a couple of years ago. It's not that I didn't appreciate all that God had provided for me, how He's protected me and what He's done for me through Jesus. I did. But I knew God was calling me - because I was feeling unfulfilled. He was calling me to Him, calling me to seek Him and not this world. I was spiritually thirsty. I remember sitting at my dining table praying "God - what do you want me to do this year?" and "I want to be excited about my future with You!”

Well of course, He answered.  He always does when His people call on Him. "This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us - whatever we ask - we know that we have what we asked of Him.” 1 John 5:14-15

And now?

Well - I'm EXCITED about my future and where He is leading me to serve Him! He has lead me to serve Him in places I never dreamed He would or that I'd be capable of serving. Now this doesn't mean I feel great everyday - the Evil One still succeeds in getting me down from time to time. But it's my focus and my attitude that God has adjusted. I'm focused on Him and His leading.

The Holy Spirit is changing me each day to be more like Jesus. "For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."  Ephesians 2:10

I want to do good works that God has prepared in advance for me to do. God was just waiting for me to ask Him to reveal them to me. I love Him for that. I love how He is always there for me even though I'm not always there for Him.

How are you doing? Do you want an exciting future with God? If you do, then get down on your knees and pray to Him. He will answer you because you are precious to Him and He does have a plan and a purpose for your life. It is exciting and fulfilling!

What does God’s grace mean?

At the heart of the good news story of Jesus is God’s incredible grace for us. So what is grace? Grace is God giving us what we need, not what we deserve. And God does this because of what Jesus did on the cross.

So what does grace mean for us? Timothy Keller wrote ‘Grace means it is okay that we are not okay.’ Grace enables a perfect God to accept imperfect people like you and me. God’s grace does not ignore our imperfections. Instead grace takes our imperfections and exchanges them for Jesus’ perfection. Grace means that God is always looking at you and mean through the lens of Jesus’ finished work on the cross.

Just as glasses help us focus perfectly, God’s Jesus glasses help him see us perfectly. When God looks at us through the lenses of Jesus, by the time his eyes focus on us, grace has swapped our sin for Jesus sinlessness. God sees us as perfect.

As God’s people who daily receive this grace through Jesus we are called to look at each other through the finished work of Jesus on the cross. Jesus died for everyone and this means that you have never looked into the eyes of someone who Jesus didn’t die for. You have never looked at someone so messed up that grace cannot reach and redeem.

We reflect this grace to others when we accept each other while knowing that not everything about us is okay. Acceptance is one of the words we have chosen to describe who we are as God’s people at Good Shepherd. We powerfully tell this story of acceptance when we welcome people and accept them even when they are not okay. We live this story as we look at every person through the finished work of Jesus on the cross and accept them. Our acceptance points people to God’s acceptance of them in Jesus - and this is what changes people.

In the acceptance of grace we find transformative power to change those things about us that are not okay. We wrongly believe that we can change people by judging them and excluding them until they shape up. This never works. What works is gracious acceptance. This is how God transforms us. This is how God works through us to transform others.

May we all work together to show the world what grace really means. Grace means that is okay that we are not okay.

Where are you placing your joy?

I have recently gone through a bit of a life change. I have finished my degree and am not studying this year. In the absence of my university study, I have had time to study myself and learn more about how I process things and where I place my worth. One thing that I have realised is that I place a lot of my identity in, and gain a lot of my joy from, my work and activity rather than from God.

I was reading C. S. Lewis’s novel The Great Divorce and I was challenged by a particular passage describing a man who chose to abandon the joy of heaven because he could not be useful there and instead wanted to continue his work.

“There was nothing to prove. His occupation was clean gone. Of course if he would only admit that he’d mistaken the means for the end and have a good laugh at himself he could have begun all over again like a little child and entered into joy. But he would not do that. He cared nothing for joy. In the end he went away.”(Lewis 73).

This passage disturbed me because I realised that I had begun to walk along this path. In the pursuit of learning and gaining a profession and ‘doing ministry’ I had lost the joy of knowing God. I had forgotten that the centre of my existence and identity is God and a relationship with Him and that everything else is secondary. There is nothing wrong with work or activity but it must not become our god.

The reality is at the end of time this is what will happen to us all. The old order of things will pass away and we will be in heaven for eternity. So we need think about whether we are binding ourselves to the temporary or living with the eternal in mind.

I want to challenge you to think about whether you do this. Have you mistaken your work as the end rather than the means? What would happen if your work, your activity or your position was taken away? Could you still find joy in God? Are you placing your treasures in heaven or on earth?

Am I “nuts” believing Jesus rose again?
Sceptics and atheists assert that the resurrection of Jesus is impossible. Dead people don’t come back to life again.  End of story.

So what do they make of Paul’s story - of how he encountered Jesus on a road to Damascus?
Or the dramatic change in Paul telling others the Good News of Jesus – for the rest of his life?!

Years later, when Paul tells his story to governor Festus and King Herod Agrippa II, he concludes:
“I am saying nothing beyond what the prophets and Moses said would happen — that the Messiah would suffer and, as the first to rise from the dead, would bring the message of light to his own people and to the Gentiles.”

At this point Festus interrupted Paul’s defense. “You are out of your mind, Paul!” he shouted. “Your great learning is driving you insane.” Acts 26:22-24 NIV

Labelling Christians as “deluded” or “nuts” is nothing new!
Paul didn’t change his tune – and neither should we.

It’s one thing to dismiss Christians as “nutters”.  It’s another to give a plausible account of what happened in light of the historical evidence: the empty tomb, Jesus’ dead body never produced, eyewitness claims that the risen Jesus kept appearing to lots of people, and radically changed lives of millions of believers since – including you and me!

Please have a chat with me, or just contact me with your interest via email, phone or in person!
