The importance of others

The problem with analogies is that they always have their limitations and while they fit some scenarios they are totally inappropriate for others. Last week, I used the analogy from motor bike riding of looking down the road through the corner, so you can corner smoothly. My point was that if we keep looking ahead to Jesus our lives will be well directed and we will avoid the wobbles that invariably happen when we just look directly in front.
Well last Saturday on our Men’s Ministry 4WD weekend my advice got me into lot’s of trouble. As I looked ahead to avoid colliding with the other vehicles I drove my 4WD straight into a deep wash out. As you can see by the photo I was in quite a bit of trouble. I should have been looking directly in front instead of further ahead. So much for my motor bike riding analogy!
The good news is that with the help of others I was able to get my car out of trouble. As a preacher I couldn’t help myself and quickly saw another analogy emerge and that is when you get into trouble it is good to have others to help you out. I seriously doubt that I would have been able to dig myself out of the hole. I needed a gentle pull from another vehicle to get me back to where I needed to be. I was actually seeing the application of my sermon from the previous Sunday ‘Doing life together’ work its way out right in front of me.
It is so easy for us to try and do life disconnected from others. It keeps things simple. It avoids the awkwardness and struggle that is often there when we relate to others on a deeper level. We also protect ourselves from being hurt when we keep our distance from others. However, what happens when our lives end up in a ditch and we do not have the inner resources to deal with it? Who do we have in our lives to help us out? We need each other to effectively walk this journey of life.
God made us to live in community. God’s Spirit gathers us to live our lives under Jesus’ leadership together. It is not something we are to attempt to do by ourselves. We need each other to keep us on track and to help us out of the odd ditch we may run into from time to time.

SA/NT DISTRICT SYNOD 2010
Impressions of a Delegate

The venue at Immanuel College was very comfortable and spacious. In fact the display and food hall was a little too large. Our dinner on the Saturday night was served by boarding students who came from various places interstate. This, too, was a great time of fellowship giving opportunity for me to chat with Aboriginal delegates from Northern Territory. Our final service in the chapel praised and glorified our most gracious God.

Our President, Pastor David Altus, emphasized the synod theme “Free: Forgiven and Forgiving” in his sermons and especially in his report while speaking about the YPOUT incident. He said that he had learnt from having to deal with this matter and he apologized on behalf of the District for any hurt and misunderstandings that occurred. Now we can move on. Although the Child Safe and Safe Place policies may be irksome at times it is imperative that we adhere to these for the safety of all. I appreciated hearing Ted Kober once again in his address after dinner which focused on reconciliation in line with our theme.

Snippets presented by Nevin Nitschke on mission initiatives gave insight into various programs and happenings in congregations who are seeking to reach out in their communities. These were inspiring. If only we could all have the enthusiasm of Hallett Cove pastor Kevin Wood! What is stopping us from being excited and bursting to tell others about Jesus and God’s great love for us? Have we become complacent while putting our trust in all the comfort and things around us? Would we really spend more time with God trusting him to provide for us if we lost it all? These questions came up in conversation with those around me.

Agency reports gave us pertinent insights into work within the District and Dr Mike Semmler presented the LCA report along with his departmental heads. My main interest is in Aboriginal Ministry SA which is now under the umbrella of the Department for Mission. This committee has worked doggedly to organize better ways to utilize the minimal budgetary allowances from the District. Apart from the workers in Ceduna, Koonibba,Yalata and Port Lincoln we now have an Aboriginal pastor responsible for the Greater Adelaide Area, a huge task.

I continue to be excited about our ‘church’ and the many avenues for outreach throughout the District. This is our BIG church family serving our Lord with the gifts and talents he has given us.

Delegate 2010-2012

19th September 2010

Looking ahead to direct us now

When I did my rider training to get my motorcycle licence the instructor told us that the best way to ride smoothly around a corner was to look as far ahead as possible. The common mistake riders make is that they look at the road directly in front of them and it causes them to wobble all over the place when cornering. You tend to either lean in too far, or not enough and have to adjust line mid corner which at best looks a little clumsy and at worst could lead to an accident.
Now looking ahead is easier than it sounds because it is counter intuitive. My natural tendency is to want to look at the road directly in front of me. Even though I have been riding long enough to have made this a habit, I still find I have to make a conscious decision to look through the corner to the end.

Living our life by faith is also a counter intuitive activity. Our natural tendency is to look at the here and now instead of looking down the road through the eyes of faith at what Jesus has accomplished for us. When we focus just on the here and now we are susceptible to losing sight of the big picture and choosing a direction through life that is not the best way to go.

Hebrews 12 says, ‘Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.’ (Hebrews 12:1, 2) We are to look through the corners of life and fix our eyes on Jesus. Jesus has already walked the journey of faith for us and marked out the route for us.

What helps you keep your eyes fixed on Jesus? Whatever it is do it so that you can stay on track and not fall off!

Pastor Noel Kluge

Children’s and Family Ministry

At the 8:45am service, Kingdom Kids are altogether in one group, of 3-8 year olds.
Last Sunday, our lesson was about Josiah reading God’s Word (2 Chronicles 34 – 35:19.). We heard how the book of God’s Words was lost and the temple was empty and dirty. The temple leader called many workers to repair the temple.
Together the Kingdom Kids made their own church to repair. They set up chairs, made an altar, flowers to put in vases, communion utensils and even found a lost scroll! We discovered how important God’s Word is and to share it with others.
There was lots of working and helping each other, with the children having a choice to: make their own book full of Bible texts, read Bible stories, build a church with blocks or role-play in the ‘made church’.
Kingdom Kids is a great place to come together to praise, learn and support each other in our faith journey. (If you don’t want to miss out, adults are allowed as helpers!)

GOOD NEWS STORY!

The weekly free bread distribution here at church on Monday evenings has become a better than Good News Story. It’s a GREAT, GRAND, HUGE NEWS STORY.
To encourage friendship and relationship building for those who come to collect the free bread on Monday evenings, (and quite a few are not attending church) a group of members have banded together to cook and serve delicious soups.
These members made up small flyers and did a letter box drop around the church area. The result is that about 20 people have attended over the last 2 Monday nights. As a result of that, one coupled came to church for the first time last Sunday.
Initiative and incentive + God = kingdom growth. Great News Story! You bet…and through the simplicity of social gospel.

Sausages and scones
Were you here to experience the fellowship and the joyous atmosphere last week? If not, you missed out on opportunity for fabulous fun, friendship and food. The ambience was outstanding and the food was even better. Why not mark the 28th November in your diaries and plan to bring friends to our next fellowship morning.

SA & NT DISTRICT SYNOD 2010
Report for Good Shepherd Board

The theme for SYNOD this year was Free, Forgiven & Forgiving

New pastors to the District were welcomed and presented to the SYNOD
Rolly was an apology.
Tertiary Institutions Committee on behalf of LSF presented a Proposal that:
“Every Pastor and congregation in the SA/NT District re-assess its pastoral care and education of young people with respect to relationships, and the role sex plays in these, as supported in God’s Word.”
DCC & GCC were asked to address this and provide resources to clearly teach young people about what sex means for relationships and to address the misconceptions given by secular society.
Many constitutional changes were made to the District constitution to bring it in line with the National constitution as directed by GCC.
It was moved that District SYNOD will now be held only every second year and the timing of SYNOD moved to the end of May.
The next SYNOD will now be in May 2012.
This will now have similar timing to our Church/School/Village AGM.
It was resolved that congregations and individuals welcome new arrivals from refugee backgrounds to their communities and that they speak out against racism wherever it occurs.
Much discussion was made over the wording needed to clearly express a change to the constitution for schools & aged care boards to have no more than 2 non Lutheran Christians on each board.
The wording approved:
There shall be no more than two (2) members of the governing body who are Christians other than from the Lutheran Church on each of the school and aged care boards resulting in no more than 20% of the number of the board.
Our own school council meets these requirements.
President David Altus gave his report and in the light of the theme for SYNOD (Free, Forgiven and Forgiving) asked for forgiveness for the way he and the District had dealt with those involved in the WYPOUT camp incident. He spoke in very general terms of the incident and that many involved were hurting and that he had meet with 6 of the 8 that were involved, following the dropping of the charges.
He asked that we all act with forgiveness to all those involved and that the district was still not able to speak more specifically about the incident.
The Finance report included the 2009 Income, current membership and the last 5 years worth of contributions made to the District by each and every congregation in the district. It was suggested that each congregation could aim to contribute 10% of their income.
The 2011 Budget was passed with total income of $1,790,000 resulting in a deficit of $35,750 to be covered by General Legacies.
Operating deficit for 2009 was $36,188.
In 2009 membership was down 2,000 to 29,356 with average weekly attendance of 14,511. Since 1997 the attendance has declined 19% and membership has declined 22%
The Aged Care Council presented the winning entry in its Aged Care Media Award that aims to strengthen the ties between the Lutheran Schools and the Lutheran Aged Care Organisations. This year the winning entry was a video from Endeavour College with its year 8 students Troy Hancock and Michael Pfeiffer receiving the award. Both were students at Good Shepherd Primary last year and Michael is a member at Good Shepherd.
A summary report will be received from the District within 2 weeks of Synod and will be on forwarded at that time.

Honest with God??

When you’re between a rock and a hard place, what do you do? Where do you turn?

Do you rack your brains? Phone a friend? Take out your anxiety on family members? Stay awake through the night worrying about it? Run and hide? Anaesthetize it?

When David is under the pump, he prays. In Psalms 50-59, we find a number of David’s prayers of lament. Several of these Psalms have headings that indicate what David was facing at the time. Between a rock and a hard place, David turns to God. For example:

When I am afraid, I will trust in you.
In God, whose word I praise,
In God I trust; I will not be afraid. (Ps 56:3-4 NIV)

Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me, for in you my soul takes refuge.
I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed. (Ps 57:1 NIV)

No matter what he was facing, David trusted God’s unfailing love. Whether he landed in a mess made by others, or a mess of his own making, David knew that he could always turn to God for mercy. In the LORD, David found sanctuary, security and strength.

How is it with you?

One of the things we can learn from David is being honest with God. When we stop trying to impress God – and instead engage in “straight shooting” with him – then we’re living as people after his own heart.

Authentic. Unpretentious. Open. Real. Vulnerable. Fair dinkum. Humble. This describes the God we encounter in Jesus. We can talk with Him about anything. As the writer to the Hebrews reminds us:

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (Heb 4:15-16 NRSV)

Joy in Jesus!

Pr Rolly Stahl

Safe Place Training for Para Vista
It is not too late to enrol.

The LCA has developed a Safe Place Policy. This policy deals with the interactions between adults (over 18). This alerts members to dangers and consequences of inappropriate behavior towards other people in the church. It also provides mechanisms and procedures, based on the Word of God, by which we can work through painful and serious matters.

We, along with the LCA, encourage all involved in ministry with people over 18, especially Team Leaders, to complete the training. This will help make Para Vista a safe place for all.

Eventually all involved in leading ministry involving adults will need to do this training. Training is valid for 3 years so everyone trained prior to 2008 will need to do a refresher course.

Remember the 2 opportunities for training at Para Vista
This Sunday starting at 12.45pm. Lunch will be provided if you contact John on 0409 819 864.

What’s your calling?

His father was a successful barber, so everyone assumed young George would follow in the family trade. Unfortunately for his dad, George was more interested in music. Unfortunately for George, his dad thought musicians were nothing more than "vagabonds." At age seven, the Duke of Weissenfels accidentally heard George playing around on an organ. The Duke encouraged George's father to develop his son's obvious talent. Since a Duke's request was not to be taken lightly, George was given lessons while his father hoped the boy's love for music would pass. Mr. Handel was mistaken. His son's passion only grew, and he became the "Celebrated Saxon."
George Friedrich Handel believed his music was a gift from God and composing was his calling. Handel enjoyed an easy and luxurious life until he made some bad business decisions and became the target of jealous less-talented musicians. His health was failing; his creditors threatened him with imprisonment. He almost gave up, yet from this valley of despair came his greatest work, Messiah. His health continued to decline over the remaining decade of his life. He suffered a fainting spell during a performance of Messiah. He went home to bed and never got up.
The Lutheran saint expressed the wish that he might die on Good Friday "in the hope of rejoining the good God, my sweet Lord and Savior, on the day of his Resurrection." His wish was fulfilled in the early morning of Holy Saturday (April 14, 1759) when this man of calling met his Messiah face to face.
When I hear the "Hallelujah Chorus," I'm thankful this would-be barber followed his calling from God.
Eph. 4:1 – “I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.”

This week’s bible readings are from: 1 Samuel 24:1-12, 1 Samuel 26:1-12.

As our Weekly News is posted on the web it has been decided that our Prayer List and Parish Register will be included in the email sent with the Weekly News rather than imbedded in the News itself. This protects the privacy of those whose names are included.

Safe Place Training for Para Vista
Please note the correction of date and time
It is hoped that churches provide an environment where all attending are safe - physically, emotionally and spiritually. Following Christ’s command to love one another we are to treat each other with respect and dignity. Unfortunately history demonstrates that the church is a place of
grace but not perfect morality.
There will be 2 opportunities for training at Para Vista
Sunday 12th September after 10.30 am service

Wednesday 15th September 7:15 to 9:30 pm.
Please assist us with the date you will be attending, by marking your welcome card, via email jdolling@paravista.org.au or by contacting the church office on 8263 5087. There is morning tea after the second service on Sunday the 12th and we will provide lunch for those attending.

Friends of Lutheran Archives meeting. For an interesting evening join Dr Richard Hauser on the topic of ‘The Patriarchs’ - the leaders in Lutheran education in the 19th century. Richard's recent book examines the role of eight leaders in the development of Lutheran schooling. Why did he select these individuals? Meeting at Bethlehem House, Sudholz Place, Adelaide, on Monday 20th September starting at 7.30pm. For a gold coin donation supper is included.

Our grounds!
40% covered 60% unkept
There are now 3 volunteers to assist with maintaining the gardens around the church. On areas allocated to these volunteers it means we will be able to maintain 40% of
our grounds. If you can spare 2 hours per month to help maintain the other 60% please contact John Dolling jdolling@paravista.org.au or 0409 819 864. Our grounds are the first contact for visitors and are what the general community see. What message would un-kept grounds give about our congregation?

Staff on leave – Dean Eaton will be taking some well earned rest from Sunday 5th -18th September. If you require assistance please contact the office on 8263 5087.
